They need to take responsibility and self police. The company started out as viewer clip oriented but when large numbers of copyrighted clips started appearing they looked the other way. They had to know this was coming they were just milking the situation as long as they could. Given the volume of copyrighted clips they are ineffect claiming them as assets but they have no right to gain benefit from them. They can just say tell us what is copyrighted and we'll take it down but you might as well have a warehouse of a few hundred thousand items with say a third of the items that belong to another company. Is it reasonable to say just tell us what is your's when you removed the items without their permission. It's obvious in this case what belongs to the wronged party but you are saying you'll only return the items the other party identifies. They need to start an approval process like most other sites. Some one has to review at least part of the clip before it's posted. This should be done to begin with to avoid illegal content from being posted. I'm not talking copyrighted I'm talking kiddie porn and such.
I couldn't help thinking about what $5 billion would buy in the software world. It's hard to compare graphics softwares and OSs but look at it this way you could buy most of the major CG software companies for that and probably pick up some choice 2D software companies to boot. That's a lot of complex software. Was the Vista upgrade worth $5 billion? If I was a shareholder I'd be pissed and want some one to explain. Mac is pulling off more innovative OS upgrades almost on a yearly basis for a tiny fraction of the cost. As a stockholder I'd want some heads to roll because all that wasted money could have gone to paying dividends instead of fat bonuses for a questionable upgrade. Microsoft's primary assest is market share which is formitable but can it last if they don't do better with future upgrades? Vista is a marginal upgrade for the user to XP so in a sense they are five years behind where they should be in development. Investors and customers may let them slide on this one but if the next upgrade doesn't look much better they will have a lot of explaining to do since Mac and Linux are constantly upgrading during the overly long Windows development cycle.
Got to say they seem to have lots of time to listen to and upload music. The one case they mentioned involved 787 individual files uploaded. That's a lot of music the person was uploading onto the web. To put things into perspective they aren't offering $3,000 to $5,000 settlements to people that uploaded or downloaded a couple of songs they seem to be going after cronic abusers. It's impossible to tell for sure without more numbers given but that seems to be the case. Uploading 787 songs borders on a side job. Yes I know they weren't being paid for the uploads but that's still a significant amount of time and effort for a busy student. Better to put that time and effort into your classes given how insanely expensive college has gotten. I'm no fan of the RIAA but there does seem to be a need for some objectivity about the settlements. If they were trying to nail some one that downloaded a couple of albums for $3,000 to $5,000 I might agree but uploading that kind of volume is fairly extreme.
Norton has always been popular with the film industry. I think back in it's heyday a good share of the profits came from selling to film companies. Unfortunately they got a double hit because as the Aerospace industry cranked down the film industry got nailed with runaway production so most of that went out of country. C&H was another good surplus company. There used to be half a dozen good ones in the LA area but I know several have gone under. I haven't lived in LA for five years so I don't know who is still in business. People underestimate the film industry. I know of several dental houses and medical supply places that sold more product to the film industry than their regular doctors and dentists. I remember one company stopped selling to us becuase we were cleaning them out all the time and they weren't able to supply the hospitals.
Tin foil paint! Can you paint your head with it? If it blocks EM radiation then it has to be great to keep them from reading your thoughts. I might even paint the dog with it.
I have a balloon payment coming up on my castle and it's value has dropped in half since the trolls burned all the surrounding forest. You know things are bad when gaming and internet based entertainment is as stressful as the real world.
Probably adding fuel to the fire was the fact that the memory limitations held for so long. I've always been into graphics and animation and the early memory issues were a major hassle. Even today shortsightedness about memory has been a major hassle for Windows. Win 2000 had a 2 gig cap and XP had a 4 gig. With the average person being able to aford 4 gig of ram and graphics people needing all the ram they can get it's bizzare with cheap ram to have such limitations. Vista is an improvement but there is a major system ram charge to get it and there still a cap that will be soon reached. He may not say Win 2000 users will never need more than 2 gig of ram but it's the way the company approaches it. Back when Amiga was around it always ran circles around Windows machines for memory. I always loved the fact that a lot of components came with extra ram slots. The Amiga 3000 had a ram limit in range of modern machines and that was 17 years ago. He may not have declared 640k was enough but he's hardly a visionary where memory is concerned.
Will the devises work in the southern hemisphere? If everything spines in the opposite direction down under will there have to be southern hemisphere versions? Will both versions work on the equator? Most important how much beer does one have to consume for this to be a legitimate topic of conversation?
And you wonder why Linux has taken up a perminate number three position? Until the average user can install and run it it'll alway be for geeks and those that can aford to pay for tech support. I'd love to be using it but I've yet to be able to get a version running on any machine. I have three seperate PCs and one Mac. I tried Ubuntu Live on all the PCs with no luck. It had a different problem on each machine. In the past I've tried Red Hat, Mandrake and Suise with no luck. Personally I couldn't care less about geek points for fighting my way through installing an OS. I'm into it for software. There are some advanges with Linux on high end graphics software but it's still too much hassle to set up and use. Really computers should be more about the software than the OS. The very fact there's still a fight proves that none of the OSs are mature enough to provide an environment that leaves you free to work without dealing with the OS. Mac probably comes the closest but even they aren't free of OS hassles. For all the technical advantages Linux still scores the worst on ease of install and use. Untill there's a fairly painless install for 90% of the machines out there Linux will always be third.
It's depressing to see where peoples priorities are. Haliburton steals tens of billions and New Orleans gets thrown to the wolves to make way for rich people's condos. Oil companies control the government and manage to surpress information about global warming that will affect the lives of everyone on the planet. What people are really concerned with is the free exchange of music, movies and software. People really do need to get their priorities screwed on straight. Anna Nichol Smith and Brittany Spears get more press than global warming and Haliburton. If music and movies are more important that corporations stealing billions from every american with the governments help we're in serious trouble. If you want to get upset get upset about something important. Music and movies could disappear overnight and we wouldn't loose a single life. Global warming is threatening millions and our grandkids will be paying for the eight year term of our current administration. Those are important things. Get angry at the companies behind that not the ones that are trying to restrict downloads.
All you have to do is max out the firewalls and not allow anything to be installed. If you are still having problems just disconnect it form the internet. Turning it off makes a Windows machine even more secure.
I had always read that sex wasn't nessaccary for diversity but it excellerates the process. It would be more of a story if the microorganism had mirrored the diversity of sex based organisms without the benefit of sex. The mutation rate is higher with sex providing for a more varied gene pool and it allows for those genes to be randomly exchanged.
isn't this the same kind of nitpicking BS everyone is so upset about? Personally I hope the judge calls foul on both sides. She did it specifically to provoke a reaction. I'd rather see our court system used for something more productive that a tit for tat exchange over copyright. I think it's time for both sides on this one to grow up and I hope a judge tells them so before he tosses the whole thing.
If Apple is just as bad as Microsoft OSs where are all the viruses and zombing? I sometimes leave my Mac logged onto the internet for days at a time. I take a deep breath everytime I log on with an XP system. I run spybot several times a day on my PCs and never have a problem with the Mac. Why all the obsession with degrading Macs when Macs have a history of security? Better to use it as an example to Microsoft why they need to improve their security.
This was never about reducing oil dependence it was about subsidizing one of the most powerful lobbies the corn lobby. Corn alcohol requires large amounts of energy to produce so it actually increases the use of coal and oil. The current administration is also fanatical about hydrogen because most hydrogen is produced from fossil sources. Yes it can be produced by electrolysis from wind or solar but it won't be. It's like "clean coal". Yes coal can be burned more cleanly and the CO2 sequestered but there isn't a single clean coal plant in operation. There are better sources for alcohol but they lack powerful lobbies.
to train them to sniff out films and music that smell bad? A single copy of The Wickerman remake can be smelled by a human with a head cold at a hundred yards. A good bloodhound should be able to sniff out a box of them from the next county.

Well they just aborted the launch a minute before launch. Given the windy conditions I'm not sure why they fueled it in the first place.
I say he should sue the P2P services for restraint of trade. How is he supposed to sell his pirated wares when they're just giving it away?
Well kids can't read but at least they know how to kill space mutants.
