Not to mention the power companies (Electrabel ) :
We are still paying for the nuclear plants to be payed of earlier ( although they are already payed off for years now ). Yet they barely investing that money in green energy.
On the contrary : they are charging their customers, for the loss of revenue due to people placing solar panels on their roofs ( because they have to pay them green certificates, because they themselves don't reach the required quota and would have to pay fines).
So the people who actually care about the environment and place solar panels, are getting a bad name, because the other people have to pay for it. It's a form of 'divide and conquer' : have the people fight each other, and they won't be strong enough to fight the real culprits .
Even if global warming is a fact, the solution is not so easy : if one thing will help us to survive it, it's our technology, which needs energy. Energy which is currently produced mainly in a way that increases global warming.
Also, developing countries are using more and more power, and yet it's those countries that will suffer the most from climate change.
If you were working for anonymous, and wanted to screw someone over, how difficult would it be to add someone's name to the list ? It's easy to convince a group of people to lynch someone. History is full of examples like that.
While i think it's a good thing they took down those sites, i wouldn't trust the data just because it came from Anonymous. That raises another question : how do you know it's Anonymous, and not some copycat ? ( I'm sure it is the real Anonymous though , but how can you know for sure ?)
Release your book chapter by chapter on your website, and put up a donation button. Put up a counter : after a target donation sum has been reached, release the next chapter.
If the book is good enough, you can be sure people will want to see the next chapters, so they will pay for it. Afterwards, the book is available for free ( but those who want that need to wait longer ).
A lot of music today seems to be engineered to make you want it , but then after listening to it 20x times, it's not good anymore. So they are like drugdealers : they get you hooked by having it played on the radio , and then you really want it , so you buy it.
The only difference is, I'm getting that drug for free now:-)
I have no problem paying artists of good music . But then i want to pay the artists, not the record companies. Why should i pay record companies when i'm the one doing the distribution ?

You missed the part about giving them anything they need. And i don't need history for it : it's working fine in my own country , where everything is controlled by major corporations , but we don't do anything about it , because everyone has to much to lose.
If you give them only the bare minimum , i'm sure they will rebel : they have nothing to lose . They will eventually figure out how to be self sufficient, but will hold a grudge against earth, because they didn't help them out when they needed it.
It's much better to send them everything they need, but to control the import/export. That way, they won't rebel, because they will have more to lose, than to gain by doing so.
In the real world , being a smartass who thinks he's better than everyone else , isn't going to be very useful either.
The situation described is the exact problem with the school system : you are taught that you are not allowed to make any mistakes. But everyone makes mistakes , so what they actually learn is how to hide that they made mistakes, and how to blame it on someone else.
The best quality in an employee is someone who can admit mistakes and learn from them , not someone who believes they are perfect and is willing to do anything just to stay on top.
The beauty of mistakes is not only that we can learn from our own mistakes , but also from the mistakes of others.
What does scoring high on a test tell you ? That you are capable of wasting a lot of time on something you will probably never use again ?
Team spirit and creativity are much more useful qualities.
If i was looking for someone to hire in the future , i would check if there was anyone with good grades , who protested against this.
So basically they kissed enough ass to allow them to be called 'MIL-STD-498 compliant'. Because functionally , there's barely any difference between 'Open Office' and 'MS Office' .
They probably just payed money for the certification , and maybe did some minor changes to comply to it. Nothing Open Office couldn't do , but they probably can't pay for it.
I think you will only get current during the actual discharge of the static electricity. The current can be calculated by taking the resistance it goes through.
If you knew his capacity , you could probably calculate the charge he was holding ( Q = C. U ) Then , by measuring the time of the discharge, you could find out how high the current was at that time.
Say Valve didn't put any effort in translating the game , but they would just be text files , easily translatable by the people themselves. What do you think will happen ?
That's right , some people will take the liberty to translate the files themselves , and post them on the internet. A lot of people would join in , basically becoming on open source project.
So are you expecting Valve to pay those translators ? The only difference here is that Valve is the one proposing it , and probably that they won't publish the translations afterwards ( i'm not even sure about this ). That last part would indeed be unfair to the translators.
You get the benefit of having a game in your own language. The benefit is also that otherwise Valve would have had to pay someone to do it , and they would have charged this to the customers.
So this way , a large group of people get translation without extra costs , and a small amount of people have the joy of being able to participate in translating a game. They don't want money, they just want to be recognized for what they did.
Offcourse, that doesn't make it open-source . If valve were to publish the translations afterwards ( so other games could use ) , that would be ideal.
If it's easy enough to learn , and as flexible as javascript , but better , then go for it. However, please make it 1 language , and make sure all browsers use exactly the same interfaces.
It's bad enough that i have to write different code for FF and IE , I don't want to have to check on Chrome's and Intel's javascript generation either.
Thanks for the info, i'll have to try that. There are plenty of Belgian beers which are only brewed locally , and they are usually very good ( they are driven by their passion for beer , not by making a huge profit )
So i'm sure it will be good , but tastes may vary ( if it tastes sweet , for example , i won't like it ) .
Well , i said ' we seem to have no problem with' . I know most people are compassionate , but there's plenty of killing going on .
But my point is that any interaction with a very advanced race, at our current stage, could be disastrous for us. What happens when one country acquires some advanced alien weapons technology ?
A highly advanced alien species might realize that seeking contact could do more harm to us than good , and avoid contact at all cost. However, a species that doesn't care about us , may contact us anyway.

So it's not as black and white as it seems.
That's an interesting point of view.
Wish i had mod points.

Really ? Then why does it sounds like asc-e ? :-)
Direct democracy does exist , it is working fine in Switzerland.

You don't *have* to use Unity . You can easily turn it off :

I don't know either, i have always done it like that. Sorry if I hurt your eyes.
Thanks for reminding me, I'll try to avoid it in the future.

Sorry, that should be impedance, not resistance.
The higher the impedance, the lower the current will be , and the longer it will take to discharge.
Should be a fun experiment though :-)

Let me put it differently.

VLC works fine. I never had any problem with it ( something i can't say about other players i've tried ).
The Ogg Frog website has a link to VLC ?
What an interesting conversation :-)

Not all dinosaurs became extinct , some adapted . The Ostrich , for example.
So, it's possible we don't become extinct , but simply adapt.
