  1. Re:Free software in action on Germany Warns Against Using Firefox · · Score: 1

This is all very strange - on BSI (this is what the german abbreviation of Federal Office for IT Security is) site there is nothing about this, BuergerCert site informs about new upcoming release of firefox that is going to fix unspecified security problem. If you compare it with IE warning from some time ago there is a difference - back then BSI issued a warning telling people not to use compromised software that is actively used for attacks and here you have a warning based on information of new release. Fear mongering - that is what it is - a new and terrible thing has happened - somebody is releasing software to fix the bug that nobody has abused yet. Good that German Gov. is issuing warning but judging on this government record (Moevenpick subsidy to hoteliers or sucking of Mr Sawicki on request of big Pharma) I'd say FDP and/or CDU (governing parties) took money from somebody again. I would not look for conspiracy anywhere but current government actually does not even bother with hiding their deplorable attitude towards private money - funny thing is that they do it in such incompetent way that it is almost laughable (well one should cry actually - they have our tax money).

It is the war so if you socialize with the guys that on occasion shoot your soldiers then you are taking risks. If you are unlucky chances are you may repeat the 'find the stuff' and following steps few times. OC it al depends. Balming all on Java and libraries is just a joke and the whole thread a silly rant. Fact is that majority of us do not work with rocket science. Yet when quality matters we usually rely on very few good sources and write code ourselves only this is not what general customer and your manager think is needed. Then again QA engineers like me have great fun fixing the stuff that has been copy pasted by geniuses that know libraries etc.

It may be that in this case they do not but not because they do not want to - it seems simply that the effects are negligible so they do not have to. There are a lot of factors that can influence whether a change is viable. One could be whether you can move all or majority of your systems to another vendor without bothering too much, the other one is education and general willingness to try. I personally see the later the major obstacle not only to linux adoption but also to a reform in any other branch of life esp. when more than small group (me and my brother-in-low) is affected, say national health system, tax system etc. It is always the same story - people refuse to change because the old shit is the shit they know, and new shit could be dangerous or even cause SPD (soft penis disease) . Now whether actually linux would be cheaper is an open question. As far as I can tell Germans are good at counting beans so I would expect that they counted it all well enough. The city of Muenchen switched (I think the process is still not quite complete) to Linux some time ago and what the guy responsible for it claimed this change to be cost neutral.

Actually you may touch very interesting point - the utilities are usually natural monopolies and as such are not really suited for a real free market which can be seen for instance by water companies that not only increase the price after privatization but also let the leaking water go where it always went at least as long as it is legally possible and does not affect renumeration of the CEO. The news outlets were not monopolies till now but mr Murdoch and forces of free market (possibly Internet is also at play here) caused major outlets to integrate into few gigantic institutions that are not controllable by anybody and most likely have some agenda. Where this can (albeit does not have to) lead is perfectly visible in Italy where one corrupt bully has made himself popular enough with his own TV stations and other media outlets and became prime minister three times (or is it four already).

Not sure about BBC right now as in recent years the quality seems to have deteriorated a bit (but so did it in the rest of media) but BBC provided service of quality superior to almost any other media organisation. It was and is one of the few organisations that justify their existence by great service. Pity if it were to cut too much of it.
