Add to this the fact that no policy discussion is possible in any of the countries involved. In US if you start talk about system wide solutions or obligations insurance companies should have (like providing basic health care to all and no canceling of contracts in case insured person gets e.g. diabetes) you are called socialist at least. On the other end of the spectrum in Germany you are accused of dismantling social system and evil anglo-saxon conspiracy if you try to point out benefits coming from own risk part (Selbstbeteiligung) or general market oriented approach in reducing prices - evil capitalist you are if you ever try. At the end of the day what you say is just a side effect of the rampant corruption of political systems: our 'representants' - they all sit deep in the pockets of the industry or on administrative positions where money is divided. In other words unless system collapses nobody will try to do anything meaningful.
Is it more or less unethical than apple itself? See here for instance - I suppose the early adopters as well as normal users of apple gadgetry should think twice about how cool their toys really are.
On the face of it is as silly however the damage done to the real economy is much smaller if predictions do not cause collapse of economy (yes I know they are not guilty or not alone) or at least a small melt down so there is a difference albeit not the one suggested.
Well not sure about civil liberties (do we still have any?) but the whole thing is just security theater nothing else. It is a waste of our money and is one of the things that may or do make our lives more difficult.
Donno what they put there but if it was me I would have put:
dvd player
connected to HDTV set
dynamo to power them
case full of pr0n
Nothing else actually deserves to be stahsed away and protected. I mean frankly what artifacts of every day life that you see around actually deserve to be saved for future generations? None! Or you mean some Hollywood shit or all speeches of Reagan do?
I dare to differ - what Moor's law is, I am not sure but it is not in the same class of 'observations' as Newton's - for once Newton's law of motions seem to hold true to this day not because anybody planned it to be this way. Indeed I suspect that Newton's observations were true even before he took a pen to write them down. Now take a look at Moore's law - it is describing certain process closely related to business activity and one which seems to be valid more due to human intellectual laziness than to anything else - we plan budget to develop a circuit that contains twice as many transistors as before and we get this done - that is nice but somehow it lacks fundamental way a law of nature seems to apply or restrictive and overwhelming nature of written law of state. It of course predicts certain things (in a way that some may call dubious) but it also relates closely to an artifact of human processing machines called transistors - if we chose different way of doing what transistors do - the law will cease to make predictions at least not the valid ones. How does that compare to what Newton observed?
Now you may still call it a law of course but we all (well almost all) know that the term may be so sticky because is so pretentious not because its fundamental nature. But in a sense you are right - humans make observations and call them laws. On certain abstract level both of them may be perceived to be laws yet I find it silly to claim they both are.
Just a side note: well saying X*Y does not really help either. What you really meant is that normal sized display that can fit on your desk will not need more i.e. you meant is DPI.
why would any of this matter - the politicians are corrupt or incompetent or both so the result does not matter.
But you are right of course. I find it preposterous this comparing result to.66 etc. I guess the grounding fathers did not think the matter trough or maybe their education level in simple matters like this was better than what universities give to their students today?
I am an ignorant in these matters I admit but to me it seems there are situations in which either there is no competition (high barriers to entry) or ones where competitors exist but they do not have to compete because change between them is impossible, cumbersome or made so expensive that such change is not feasible. Some of those situations are called natural monopolies. Of course free market freaks (FMF) would not accept even that such term describes existing situation but closer look at the reality proves that they do exist, do well and make people suffer high prices if not worse. Even bigger anathema to FMF is the way to help customers in such situations which include market regulation and in some case 'socialism' of (usually local) government providing the service itself. It works for water companies where there is not a single proof that privatization without regulation actually works and provides better service. In my view it may be the same for ISPs. In Germany former monopolist is obliged to provide last mile to the competitors for a limited price. This made the market really competitive and surprisingly some people (quite high in numbers actually) chose to go back after tasting what the competition has in store. Of course DT (Deutsche Telekom) would not lower the prices or work on quality and customer service if it was not forced to. Hence the regulation was needed and achieved its goal. I laugh every time when I think about my (Internet) experience in UK and read about how fancy the networks are in US.
hmm - I copy my media library into the HDs gradually but do it for iPad or whatever Apple wants me to pay for would be well silly. They have some nice products like iPods with preset sound level limits but for my kids a book and conversation is still main way of communication. This may change of course. I was wondering about this copying of movies to other media. I tend to have movies made in other languages that ones I speak (I speak fluently 3) and use subtitles. Last time I checked (admittedly longtime ago) this was an obstacle esp. if one wanted to have a choice w/ or w/o subtitles (for different audiences). Then again I do not spend too much time watching movies. Why should I?
I think you do not need a lawyer to explain to you that speeding up to get trough is plain wrong and asking for trouble. Yellow is for allowing the few guys that cannot safely break without causing mayhem to go trough. That is common sense and it seems to me applicable in these few European countries I had a chance to live in.
What I found perplexing is that in Germany you will not get fined if you got into intersection few seconds after the lights changed (Germans that I know call it: "still orange"). Not sure about how many seconds this could be but the automatic systems that are catching this particular offense seem to be tuned to this effect. On top of it some of those also control for speed which is good I have seen few accidents myself where driver tried to squeeze more yellow from red. I was also able to get away with being photoed on such intersection due to obstacle further on (turning left) - they hardly sent a ticket in such case.
So there is in your view a clear division between buying (customers) and stealing (pirates) populations? I can see some people not buying stuff at all but majority of my friends belong to both worlds - they purchased some of their goods, they copied some of purchased goods for illegal purposes like backup etc and some stuff is just outright pirated. In such world hitting a man like me who has one of two pirated movies given to by friends is going to hit a customer.
I suppose they would not care if I did not buy anything from them anyway as after I was robbed this way they would have gotten all I owned anyway and would not be able to afford any new purchases or rentals for foreseeable future.
I think by calling them Luddites you do disservice to Luddites even if you take into account context of using this term on/.
In my view this is an action of few unscrupulous lawyers abusing broken legal system. I do not mind paying a fee for a movie I watch (albeit in this case I see no way I would be willing to pay for the crap they are suing for) but let it be a just fee reflecting the actual cost and spreading the proceedings to the guys that actually made the movie. This shit (I mean the stated method to abuse of legal system) is spreading like a wild fire giving joys to no one but involved lawyers - I suppose it is time to introduce some sort of solution that can stop the nonsense.
I can suppose you can patent novel way of using them but what sense does it make to patent existing thing - is this what you think? If the company invented this cancer gene I suppose it should be also liable for all the damage it causes - I can imagine all the women that got cancer (or say all such US women) filing suits against these bastards as they invented a gene that took their health (and possible life) away. I think that should teach them bastards.
Note that I fully agree with the right of the inventor to profit on his/her invention but this right should be limited somewhere and court decided to put some limits there. It is good so.
They taught me these things in a technical university - quality is not absolute but must be good enuff - you make it a holly grail and you lose money, you disregard it you will piss of customers (and lose money). I guess not being a computer scientist has its advantages.
General Rule For Getting Hired: Don't forget to include a complete collection of your/. postings. I can't think of a better way to impress a future employer than to show them just how funny and clever you really are and all this during work time!.
Well I work with software 20 years or so and in this time I used services of professional software developers as well as professional entertainment agents (lets call them that) and I recognized number of similarities:
a good worker doing a decent job is a rarity.
off shoring does not really work
quality costs
The list can be longer of course but what both groups do not share is looks. Having said this I must note that some of the girls I worked with on software looked better than the ones I paid to for entertainment. I wonder if it worked the same the other way for coding.....
I think you are right but your proposal misses one vital feature - this switcher should also fully automatically transfer all our account information to the tax man - that would save the government some millions usually charged for bank accounts info stolen from swiss banks.

the individual Joe would not buy his phone either which may be a sign of common sense.

the company should have integrity to keep their hands off private life of 21 year veteran.

virtualize them

Why did I feel a bit of a discomfort due to expected 'Chuck Norris' and seen 'Bruce Willis'?

Could this be that there is a lesson here?

Well it is not only content of mails that went to wrong people but contact names too - so Chinese governement has surely hands in it.
