Are you trying to be retarded here? What I posted should be clear enough. The law has been challenged, AQIS cannot abuse it.
I don't think it's the government's business what my wife and I do in our bedroom even if we photograph or video tape it.
It is the governments business what you bring into and out of this nation. It's their business because it's my business. There are a whole host of things (pests, diseases, dangerous items) I dont want you bringing in here. If you dont want the government to watch you and Mrs simian going at it then dont bring it, simple.
Customs laws apply to Customs zones only, which are at points of entry and exit of this country. Unless you've built your bedroom inside a customs zone your point is irrelevant.
Unlike the US, Australian Customs Laws (Customs Act of 1901) protects me from unlawful seizure (I.E. a government employee cant simply run off with my laptop and do what they like with it without cause) as well as non-customs related questions (are you gay, did you have sex with any prostitutes, do you believe in Mohammed and so forth). It limits their abilities to search and gives me recourse if they act outside the bounds of the customs act (as in the link I posted). But it also gives me an obligation to declare anything I bring in. Everything that gets taken off you requires the Customs agents to issue you with a seizure receipt, failure to do so is a federal crime. Further more if you believe this seizure to be unfair you can challenge it in court (this has been done before, successfully).
So I hate to interrupt you knee jerk "buh-buh-buh-mah-freedoms" reaction but I still have a lot more freedom getting into and out of this country then I do in the United states, didn't they suspend your entire constitution in customs zones.
Wasn't this sort of thing ruled legal a while ago for purposes of circumventing region encoding on DVDs, that was deemed anti-consumer or something else I can't be arsed looking up?
For personal use. If you tried to sell a pre-modded Xbox MS could come down on you like a ton of bricks. However selling the modchip is fine, even installing it.
A dongle blurs the lines (no installation), and with the US copyright laws bought in through the free trade agreement Sony, MS and Nintendo have been lawyering like crazy to get these laws repealed and Modding to be declared illegal. Fortunately the phrase "activist Judge" does not exist in the common Australian vernacular and seeing as our legal system isn't precedent based the next judge could come along, tell Sony to get stuffed and undo all the damage. All we need is one judge with a clue, the cause of this is more ignorance then corruption.
Thank God you got the convicts and we got the Puritans.
I'm grateful for that every day, speaking as an Australian.
Now that you've bought it up, I'd like to educate you as to the kinds of criminals that were bought to Australia. The reason for bringing convicts to do labour was to expedite the construction of a colony (the British empire did the same with some US colonies and elsewhere) so they didn't send the murderers, rapists and other such violent ruffians that would cause trouble for their guards. Those stayed safely in the confines of old blighty. Instead the petty criminals were sent to the colonies or "transported", thieves, deserters, people in debt (yes, they imprisoned you if you didn't pay back then), even just for being Irish (as subversives, it was illegal to even display an Irish flag at the turn of the 19th century). At the end of their sentences convicts were not transported back to England, instead they were given a parcel of land in Australia and permitted to work that land (so much of it around, it was worthless to sell). So in the end the convicts became colonists, which is why the hardened criminals stayed in England.
As I said, a lot of people were sent here just for being Irish so you'll meet a fair few Australians with Irish surnames.
Really, Aussieland seems to be heading into the direction of you own no personal property.
Really?
Because I live here and nothing like that even seems remotely true.
Check your sources and get back to me.
By the By, the law under which this trial was conducted was foisted on the Australian books by none other then the United States (via a free trade agreement that our then fuhrur the Honourable Mr John Howard signed).
Australia is not part of Europe and what does anything you wrote have to do with population reproduction rates?
I guess you've never heard the argument.
The GP doesn't give a shit about reproduction rates, the reproduction rates of western nations are low for many logical reasons (mostly financial), the argument is that there will be no $WESTERNERS left because the $BAD_RACE is out breeding us (which is true but irrelevant) so the idea is to stir up fear and mistrust of non-western races as a precursor to an anti-immigration campaign.
I'll give you the benefit of the doubt here and say your naive, incredibly naive to not pick up on that. If true I kind of envy you, I wish I'd never met the racist morons I've suffered through.
Also, reproduction rates are great enough in every western nation that our populations will keep growing. The GP's argument is a complete farce, as I said, precursor to an anti-immigration rant.
BTW, the reason the average woman has more children in the Philippines then in the United Kingdom is primarily because in the Philippines parents become entirely dependent on their children when they get too old/impaired to work where as in the UK there is enough wealth (either in savings or OAP) to support them. So the fact that there are more births per woman in the Philippines is irrelevant.
What is it with Australia? They want to filter the Intertubes in was that make Iran look like an island of freedom,
That was a small group of religious extremists, who have since been smacked down. Getting a filter now is impossible, since the greens control the senate and the independents control the house (we had an election a few weeks back). The best they got was a "voluntary" filter from Australia's worst ISP's (most people in Australia have the choice of 5+ ISP's). In the mean time, my Amcom and iinet connections remain unfiltered.
Would you like it if I said all Americans were naive blubbering vagina's like Rush Limbagh? (I cant be arsed googling the correct spelling). Not fair using the worst example of a people as the average is it?
Are the people that propose these law actually elected and represent the views of the average Aussie?
Is Joe Biden or John McCain a representative of the average American, how about Sarah Palin (no wait, dont answer that). Polly's always live in a world of their own and always seem surprised when reality crashes in on them. Same in every country mate.
it is now virtually impossible for the filtering scheme to pass through the Senate.
The Filter is dead, long live the filter (I'm sure many angry./ers wont let it die). At least I can still give the finger to an AQIS (Australian Quarantine and Inspection Services) official at the international airport and not disappear into an interrogation room for 3 days.
As far as overreaching border controls go, we did not get the short end of the stick.
Also, customs are only searching for illegal porn (so that video of you and your monkey wife doing is legal, tasteless but legal) you just have to declare that you've got it, the same as prescription medication. After all, it's not like customs will hand back you porn if you so much as threaten to sue them, no wait... they did.
Besides, asking "Do you have any pornographic material" is slightly less absurd then "Do you intend to overthrow the government of the United States" as far as arrival questions go.
So dear Americans, dont Visit Australia because you'll have a harder time trying to get back into your own country (and you're not staying here forever).
People should also stop believing marketing. I guess your nick is quite appropriate
You people who want a 10 hour active
No-one I know with an Ipad has been able to get it past 5 hours in real world conditions. It does worse then my EeePC.
instant-on laptop
Also dont know where you get this idea from. It takes just as long as my Ubuntu install from a cold start. If you're using standby as a measure of "Instant On" then Even Windows fits the bill.
You know that multi-touch one
And other gimmicks.
about 1.5 lbs
I'm sorry but here we use Metric measurements. Lets assume 2KG, if you have a problem lifting 2KG spend that A$700 on a gym membership and plenty of 13" laptops come in at under 2 KG. Most netbooks come in at under 1 KG.
Plus they will have a keyboard, not require a separate machine for activation, loading music, not tie you into Apple's distribution channels, have networkable storage (using CIFS and NFS) as well as being completely interoperable with all your other kit. Oh and can be used in any type of secure business enviroment. Because the Ipad does none of the above.
As for being a tablet, the Ipad is a complete failure because it cannot interoperate with other devices (mass storage) or other networks (join domains, network protocols like CIFS), everything requires a separate machine with Itunes so it cant be shared around (back to mass storage). Either the entire tablet fad will blow over or the Ipad will be killed by more functional Android or even WebOS tablets (as unlikely as it is for WebOS to get off the ground) which may even offer such functionality as joining a domain, connecting directly to a projector or becoming an input device for laptops and desktops.
It's better than many point-and-shoot cameras? That's simply an absurd claim.
Indeed, I have an old Canon Ixus 70 point and shoot (powershot something or other for you yanks) and it's so far superior in terms of focusing and picture clarity then any phone or MP3 player I've seen. Even my new Moto Milestone which does fairly good pics at 5 Mpix is nothing compared to the quality I get at the same res on my Canon. Lets not even begin with action shots, I've never seen a mobile take a picture of anything moving without the whole thing being horribly blurry and compared to Canon G9 or even a modern Ixus action shots on my point and shoot suck.
This is not directed at the Parent but to all who have expressed such views (and there are a few of you in this thread).
This guy is a complete nutbar, having read his manifesto it reads like something that comes out of a mad dictator rather then a rational plan for change (Forcing the TV stations to show a program based on a specific philosophy, no immigrants, filthy babies and so forth). None of his points are valid because they are all tied into ridiculous extremist philosophies.
Now I'm normally the first to blame America's gun culture or to call out the police for excessive violence but I can do neither here. This guy was a nut, no culture could have prevented him from doing insane things and the police acted rationally and expediently in this situation. 9 out of 10 hostage situations that the police deal with are crimes of opportunity (bank robbery, botched escape) and hostages are taken in the heat of the moment as a means of escape, this is why police use more negotiators then snipers. But this case is the rare 1 in 10 where a negotiator is useless and the hostage taker needed to be removed with as few civilian casualties as possible. As far as I'm concerned, this was resolved in the best possible way with 0 civilian casualties.
If you look at history you will find plenty of evidence of atheists doing unpleasant things. Pol Pot for a start.
The thing is, Pol Pot is an atheist in the same way Hitler was a Christian. Technically it's true but no-one has any doubt that Hitler didn't declare a war on Jews in the name of God. In the same way Pol Pot was a monster who happened to be Atheist, Hitler was a monster who happened to be Christian.
Also, Cambodia is a Buddhist country, so technically they are all Atheists. Although having personally seen the parts of Angkor where the Khmer Rouge had ripped out Buddhist artefacts to fund their war/genocide I doubt they were devout Buddhists either.
But back to the matter at hand and to further your point, history has plenty of examples of wars launched in the name of god, god being used as a cover for other purposes (most of the crusades were to gain control of the spice/silk routes into Asia) I've never actually heard of atheism being used as an excuse for a war or genocide. Genocide in particular as it's hard to get a large group of atheists (lack of strong beliefs) to follow such reckless orders precisely because atheism is not organised. An atheist may have done terrible things but terrible things have not been done in the name of atheism, there is an important distinction there.
Europe doesn't need growth limits. At their current rate of replacement, there won't be many Europeans left in this world in a few generations.
Christ all mighty, this Neo-Con bullshit again.
"Oh noes, teh evil immigrants are going to kill our nation and history, blah, blah, ADDED FOR EXTRA SCAREMONGERING!1!one1!"

I live in Australia and over the last 50 years we've had so many new groups integrate it's not funny. The local racist organisation will tell you that the Africans have come to destroy the Australian way of life. When I was a wee tacker (20 years ago) they used to tell me how the Asians were going to steal all the Jerbs and there would be none for me (yep, saw how that one turned out). When my dad was my age the same thing was said about the Wogs (Greeks and Italians), the Irish before them, going back to when captain Cook first settled onto Botany bay there were these same scaremongers spouting the same bullshit and to be quite frank, I'm sick of it.
So with a Greek Kebab (souvlaki), Kwai Teow, Indian Curry, Meat Pie and Cold Beer I call BS. Immigration has done nothing but help this nation and I can say with absolute certainty that introducing and integrating new groups has not destroyed the things that made Australia great.

Contrary to the popular delusion, you the gamer are the product, the advertisers and game makers are the customers. You also agreed that Sony could change things whenever they wanted when you opened the box. Sony's done nothing illegal here, wrong maybe but definitely not illegal. It's the courts job to rule on violations of the law, not good will. At absolute worst the court should have ordered the gamer to hand back his PS3 and Sony to refund the gamers money in full.
How could any court not view this as false advertising?
Because it wasn't advertised prominently or deceptively. When you buy a Sony Playstation or Microsoft Xbox you are expected to understand that things may be subject to change at Sony's (or Microsoft's) whim. This is part of what we call "common sense" or more accurately "having half a brain" so what I want to know is why this case made it to an Australian court in the first place. The plaintiff is clearly a moron.
My guess is that they have fresh Vaios and PS3s (i.e. hookers and blow) to spare.
Actually no, we enforce some standards of integrity over here. Besides, Sony was legally in the right.
Point in short, when you buy into a closed platform you accept that the owner of that platform can change whatever they like without prior notice.
More likely Chinese, which are right next door, will end up fitting this bill.
Umm... the Chinese and Japanese dont exactly get along. There was this whole occupation and more then one Sino-Japanese war.
You're better off looking at Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam. It is the dream of many poor Thai ladies to get married to a nice rich "nippon man". A lot of face in having a Japanese son in law.
I mean...just using it for physical pleasure...since it isn't a real human, would it be cheating?
Your example could also be used for goats in a marital relationship but something tells me that she'll have problems with someone who sleeps with goats.
Further more, you are treating women as if they are rational creatures.
Stop that,
A few men are lucky enough to be in a relationship where the other partner openly allows you to take other partners. If your partner does not already permit this then forget any hot robot action (should really be hot android action but I digress) as you are an exclusive bit of property to her.
Oh, and stop thinking that women operate rationally, you're only showing that you've never really met one.
Because the Sceptics have diluted and changed the meaning of the word sceptic.
We've relabelled them Deniers because that's what they are. They aren't interested in evaluating evidence and will cling to the tiniest error and use that as evidence that the science is wrong. A typical conversation between a scientist, sceptic and denier:
Scientist: Here is my publication with my results.
Sceptic: I'll need more proof, I want to replicate your experiments and get my own results.
Denier: You didn't dot an "i" on page 158, this report is a sham and all your so called "science" is wrong. You need to be forced out of the scientific community.
This is pretty much what the Climategate and IPCC controversies boiled down to, typo's and misinterpretations. Fortunately the real sceptics won in the end but not before the deniers did enough damage.
Side note, The Climate Skeptics party in the 2010 Australian election misspelled "Sceptic" (Skeptic = En_US, Sceptic = En_UK/En_AU) so it's little wonder they got 607 votes in total.
Is the "interesting" mod referring to how interesting it is that you are bad at understanding/discovering causes?
Apple refuses to follow standards and does not have a decent framework for introducing new hardware. Cause discovered and understood.
Having supported Mac's in a professional capacity I have seen multiple examples of what the GP is talking about but Mac users tend to pretend that their machine didn't reboot when they plugged in a new bit of kit.
To get back on topic, I avoid quicktime like the plague as it's more bug ridden and vulnerable then anything produced by Adobe and almost as bad as IE6 itself. Of course Apple insists on foisting Quicktime upon people by tying it into Itunes so I avoid all Apple products all together. Itunes should not require Quicktime, Bonjur or the other 30 odd components it installs.
Oh, I got the joke...
It just wasn't funny.
Advice you should live by.
BTW, few Australian's actually know that part of our history. Pay attention, you may learn something yet.
Are you trying to be retarded here? What I posted should be clear enough. The law has been challenged, AQIS cannot abuse it.

Actually no, we enforce some standards of integrity over here. Besides, Sony was legally in the right.
Point in short, when you buy into a closed platform you accept that the owner of that platform can change whatever they like without prior notice.
Umm... the Chinese and Japanese dont exactly get along. There was this whole occupation and more then one Sino-Japanese war.
You're better off looking at Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam. It is the dream of many poor Thai ladies to get married to a nice rich "nippon man". A lot of face in having a Japanese son in law.
Worse, I've seen an Imac do a "silent" (what's silent about it, it's quite obvious what happened) reboot when a USB thumb drive was plugged into it.
It's MS's standard strategy,
Embrace <- You are here
Extend
Extinguish
I initially read that as "As a Vagina Taxpayer" and thought, so you're married and what does that have to do with the topic at hand.
Back in your box. We've changed things before, remember pluto? Well that used to be a planet. Don't test our patience.
The Plait belt has quite a ring to it.
