It appears that the European Commission may not in fact be a complete waste of space after all. Wonders will never cease. Now if they could just get France and Germany to obey the deficit rules they signed up for...

Some people are just born suckers.

I'm sure they'll get to a PPC port. But I currently use NetFront on my iPAQ, and that'll take some beating. The "Smart-Fit" page rendering does an amazing job of reformatting pages to be readable on the small screen. Plus tabbed browsing, very high degree of "big browser" compatibility, and a JVM for good measure. NetFront ain't free though, so a decent PPC version of Minimo would be velcome.

Why on earth is this modded insightful? While there are obvious difficulties in collecting data to validate climate models, the fact is there is a lot of historical data (geological records etc), and model after model shows human factors having a major effect on the earths climate.

The parent poster hasn't critiqued any of the science or data going into those models, but simply labelled it all "pseudo-science" out of hand. Insightful my arse.

  9. This IS balanced on Defending Harsh Sentences for Spammers · · Score: 4, Insightful

I see a lot of people saying things like "you do more time for rape and muder, so these sentences are disproportional". But the purpose of the criminal justice system is to try and make people comply with the law, not just to punish them for breaking it. Increasing the sentences for already serious crimes like rape and murder won't significantly affect the likelihood of people comitting those crimes, because of the nature of the crimes. On the other hand, if a crime like spamming is seen as a high-profit, low risk option (slap on the wrist and a fine), the law will be widely broken. It is therefore perfectly reasonable to impose hefty jailtime sentences to make sure spamming is not seen as a low-risk crime. Just my 2 cents.

Malware written for fun isn't any less damaging, I guess, but when apparently written specifically for a commercial purpose (sending spam in this case) it's certainly more annoying IMHO. Personally I would like to see something like a Maquis spin-off, or a Section 31 spin-off, whatever. You know, break the mold, explore some of the not-so-utopian aspects of the federation, have some characters that don't go flying around the galaxy with the starfleet regulations up their arses pissing everyone off. No holodeck episodes. No time travel episodes, or other lame excuses for period peices. There would be no need for a hiatus to do something like that. Wishful thinking though.

  14. Business plan summary on Can Infinium Compete In The Game Console Market? · · Score: 5, Funny

*Target market: people who have already grown out of games, and their wives! OK, so the kids might actually be vaguely interested.

*Subscription: $30/month for crap games, anything worth paying will be extra.

*Console cost: Free with 2 year sub, $??? with a 1 year sub.

Somehow I can't see this working. With your PC or conventional console, $30/month will get you a new game, or a couple of used/budget titles, which you get to keep for ever if you like, or you can trade them in/sell them. Plus you can rent a good few games for that money, without a monthly commitment.

If the $30/month actually gets you access to a constantly expanding list of decent games, or the premium games have a suitably small one-off fee (rather than pay per play, or limited time payment) then they might just pull it off. I'm not holding my breath though, I guess we'll see when they eventually list some publishers.
