  1. Best OSX Unix book... on Mac OS X: The Missing Manual (Second Edition) · · Score: 2, Informative

the best OSX Unix book is 'Unix for Mac OX' by Matisse Enzer, If you're looking to learn Unix on the macintosh. It covers everything from commands, pipes, environment, editors, permissions, scripts... it's very thorough.

I probably wouldn't recommend it for people already comfortable with Unix, but for a beginner it's the best OSX Unix book I could find. Highly recommend it!

I've been thinking about learning JSP for web development but recently I've started looking at Apache Cocoon which is an XML framework, built on java. It uses XSP to call java business logic which then gets rendered in html. This looks very similar to JSP (except for the XML stuff).

  5. ?Apple protecting it's digital hub strategy on Apple Uses DMCA to Halt DVD burning · · Score: 2, Interesting

I'm not sure where I stand regards to Apple's idvd demand (especially using DMCA as the reason), but I just started thinking about their digital hub strategy and sort of understand where they might be coming from. Here's an example:

Let's say a consumer is looking for a new stereo system. In part, their decision will come down to the usability of it's interface (digital tuner vs. knob, layout of presets...). Companies invest resources to make products easier to use.

Now lets say that stereos evolve so that the interface is software based. Apple releases a stereo system called istereo which has an amazingly intuitive interface (yet standard hardware components -as is generally the case today). Someone comes up with a way to get the software istereo portion of this product to work with non apple equipment. Now there is nothing to differentiate Apple's products with standard software-interface based hardware.

I think Apple's move has less to do with traditional software mod's than with the direction that Apple wants to -integrate- it's software with traditional hardware.

What's the difference between a software based interface that's tied to a particular product and a hardware based interface that's tied to the product?

I'm glad that this judge has exposed these actions of the FBI. The next time the FBI says that it's ridiculous that any agent would abuse these broad powers given to them under the Patriot Act, we can just point to this example. The next time the FBI says that these powers are necessary in order to combat terrorism, just point to this example.

  7. I think I saw that show on Violence, Video Games And Donahue · · Score: 1

I saw a Donahue episode several weeks ago regarding violence in video games. The one thing that I really -do- remember from that show was someone talking about the technical accomplishments of Grandtheft auto, and the shift in game design that it represents. So I don't know why this guy is whining. Maybe he just didn't think he got enough sound bytes. (if this is the same episode I saw)

The show definitely leaned more towards "Ok maybe there's no proof that these games cause violent behavior but I can't imagine that it doesn't have some negative effect". This guy did have opportunities to speak but he just tried to spew out his 'standard' arguments defending video games, and feels he got nailed for it.

Donahue is a very smart guy. His show is very new. Some shows are more balanced than others, but I think he's putting effort into getting creative discussions and the show is evolving.

Also, Donahue is very up front about his own personal opinions on political issues. So don't try to imply that he's got some hidden agenda. Of course he has an agenda. It's just not hidden.

I think this MIT guy's just kicking himself because he could have presented a good argument but he's realized that his canned speeches are more of a bad habit than inspiration. Don't blame Donahue for your bad habits and inability to improvise!

(and if I'm referring to a completely different show, then ignore everything that I just wrote:)

Here's a thought... What about the concept of an advertisement portal? People are always looking for solutions. If these ad's were categorized, I would certainly go to an ad portal site for comparative shopping.
