  1. Complexity theory IS Chaos Theory? on Harnessing Complexity · · Score: 1

"Complexity theory is not the same as chaos. Complex systems are not chaotic, though they do depend on variation in order to adapt, or change the equilibrium point. The important message here is that complex systems are not beyond our understanding, though it may be tough" Isn't that the whole point of Chaos theory, That there is an underlying order to any complex system? Sounds like Complexity theory IS Chaos theory (or very closely related)

But, if you threw your regular mail in the trash only to find out that 1 year from now it shows up again -what would you think?

People on this board are very computer literate so it might seem common sense that an email can somehow be retrieved after deleting it. There's *lots* of people out there who think they are taking proper precautions when *deleting* a file.

I think it comes down to an issue of privacy. Is it reasonable to assume that 'Carnivore' is not stalking you while you browse the web? I think that's why people are so upset after hearing about Carnivore. is it reasonable for grandma to assume that 'deleting' an email isn't really deleting it?

I haven't really thought much about whether a 6 month limitation would be a good thing, but I certainly think it's an interesting idea. Maybe emails should *really* be wiped from a personal computer 6 months after deleting it. (I'm not talking about company machines, that's different).

I signed up for Earthlink/Mindspring DSL, and cancelled after techinician said they would need to drill a hole in my wall to bring the lines in. Since I'm renting an apartment, this was not a good option for me.

According to Earthlink's contract, the 'cancellation fee' starts *after* installation has taken place. According to their website, installation means actual DSL connectivity (modem/software installed and configured). I had absolutely nothing installed, yet Earthlink *refused* to retract their $56 cancellation fee. They were even offering a free DSL modem with connectivity. If I had known they were going to screw me like that I probably should have cancelled after I got the modem. It sucks, because I was just trying to be fair.

I would never recommend this company again to anyone with the kind of horrible customer service I received from them regarding DSL!!!

I find it interesting that Transmeta has gone from 'we are not in competition with Intel' marketing strategy to the current 'they are 5 years behind us'. This seems like they are challenging both AMD and Intel, perhaps because they are foolish or perhaps they are confident.

Also, can anyone confirm that Transmeta started working on Crusoe *after* the company was actually formed? Who's to say that they haven't been working on this chip for 5+ years?

What about text based MUD's? I got hooked for years on a game called MUME. It's one of the most detail oriented, realistic games I've ever played. It's based on Lord of the Rings. Players can choose either to play a white race (dwarves, elves, hobbits...) or dark race (orcs, troll's, bn's). Usually there's over 50-100 people playing at a time.

There's so much more to this game than hiding around a corner waiting for people to arrive so you can shoot them! You might be walking across a frozen river that happens to melt. If you don't know how to swim, you will drown.

  11. *spoilers* Titan was very good! on Review: 'Titan A.E.' · · Score: 1
I thought Titan AE was great. Most Science Fiction/fantasy that I've seen or read deals with the threat of total destruction, and it's up to one person to save the world... Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, Lightyear, Total Recall, Terminator, Matrix...

Titan AE made great use of the soundtrack to complement the mood. The animation and colors were awesome, and I thought the movie overall was well thought out (New Bankok was very cool).

I wouldn't expect the character development to get much better in any animation (except perhaps with some of the older disney movies like Bambi, and Dumbo). The actors did a great job with the voices, and there was humor throughout the whole movie (although it wasn't meant to be a comedy). Gune, the turtle was definitely the funniest character.

    **Big spoilers**
The one biggest surprises that happened was when the Insect cook got shot, towards the beginning of the movie. I expected him to be the funny sidekick that survived right through to the end, and was shocked to see that he was killed.

Isn't it curious that kids are no longer given IQ tests? (answer: because they didn't accurately describe an individuals *true* potential).

This software evaluates potential violence, rather than intelligence. Other than that, I don't see much of a difference. I think it would be much more effective to use such questions to engage a one on one conversation with the student.

Communication is one of the most important aspects of our society, yet we build an education system where there is a 30+ to 1 relationship between teacher and students; we use software to evaluate a person's behavior without (potentially) ever having talked with this person.

Maybe teachers should be required to take psychology lessons, or classroom sizes should be smaller. This type of software is not the solution, however. The way I can see computer software having a longterm positive effect, would be a student tracking system where individuals, teachers, and parents can interact with questions and comments that get tracked and evaluated from kindergarden through highschool. This would teach us more about the students, parents *And* teachers. We'd learn which students were getting attention in class, and which one's go unnoticed. We'd learn about the teachers who play favorites and prejudge their students. We'd learn about the parents who don't participate in their children's education. And maybe we would learn why so many kids in our country, who have so much potential end up working for $7-8hr.

  17. Concentration/Focus affects time? on Time Doesn't Exist · · Score: 1

How does meditation affect the perception of Time? According to Thoreau, the world is both infinitely large and small; The vast universe and a single pedal of a flower.

If Time doesn't exist, then our perception of time varies from person to person. Does meditation actually allow one to 'slow' down his/her life? Compare a highly skilled artisan, for example. He has put his "Time and Energy" in learning that skill. Each minute of education becomes increasingly more focused/magnified. If you magnify a line, don't you begin to see the dots. If you focus/magnify your life, does that mean that in essence you've slowed down your life? In contrast, a person who chooses not to study, learn... could be considered one who skips through life (sort of like skimming a rock across the surface of water); in the end, this person might look back and wonder where it all went. Does this make sense?
