    Sure you can steal a book, just like you can steal a CD. I however do not believe that it is possible to steal music, just like I don't believe it's possible to steal a story.

    If we are dealing with the average joe, then he should just pick x86 and whatever distro he is using should provide sufficiently high emphasis on x86 that it is the only obvious choice. 99.99% of the time that will be the correct choice. Average Joes should not be doing anything even closely resembling package management.

    The chip in my 2004 Honda Accord's automatic transmission fried about two years ago. I was driving along, up a slight incline when all of a sudden my car dropped down into 3rd gear and would "surge" whenever it tried to shift into 4th. I managed to get it home, and then to the shop the next day. Apparently some chip just went haywire, they replaced it in about an hour for around $40. I haven't had any issues since but I certainly don't trust the things very much anymore.

    It seems like every time someone comes up with a new "unbreakable security scheme" on slashdot their pitch always starts with something to the effect of "so we start with this USB key...". Such measures are more about physical security, than crypto security. All you are really saying is "good long keys are more secure", which everyone already knows.

    I might as well say, "Well if I light my computer on fire (and use longer keys) then ninjas won't be able to steal it".

    The cameras in people's homes are a UK Gov plan that the councils have no choice but to follow - blame the cabinet for that cracking idea

    There is always an alternative choice, though it may not be the most pleasant of things to think about. Us American's kicked your government to the curb over a few tax disputes (and a few other issues). Placing cameras in private citizens' homes seem to me like a much bigger issue.

    You guys could at least throw a few riots or something. And no, angry postings on slashdot do not count. By excusing this sort of behaviour all you are doing is shifting blame from your government to yourself.

    Integer arithmetic does not accumulate error, only floating point does that. Now they may have been using floating point, but his point is they should have been using integer arithmetic.

    Had they been doing so, it could have run for 13 years with absolutely no accumulated error.

    I think that the misuse of "your" shows that this post was entirely made up. If this slashdotter is a real MSFT employee, then it doesn't sound like someone from client performance team of the core product group.

    There is no super secrete leak committee.

    See, this statement is logically flawed.

    If you knew about it, and told us it existed, then it would not in fact be "secrete" and thus not exist. Your absense of knowledge of this "super secrete" committee is similarly in no way prove of it's nonexistance. Furthermore, if the the committee does in fact exist and you are aware of it, then you denying its existance would be expected.

    Last I checked RMS didn't do kernel work (outside of GNU HURD, and that does not count). He would have very little to do with implementing ZFS in linux.
