Sure you can steal a book, just like you can steal a CD. I however do not believe that it is possible to steal music, just like I don't believe it's possible to steal a story.
If we are dealing with the average joe, then he should just pick x86 and whatever distro he is using should provide sufficiently high emphasis on x86 that it is the only obvious choice. 99.99% of the time that will be the correct choice. Average Joes should not be doing anything even closely resembling package management.
The chip in my 2004 Honda Accord's automatic transmission fried about two years ago. I was driving along, up a slight incline when all of a sudden my car dropped down into 3rd gear and would "surge" whenever it tried to shift into 4th. I managed to get it home, and then to the shop the next day. Apparently some chip just went haywire, they replaced it in about an hour for around $40. I haven't had any issues since but I certainly don't trust the things very much anymore.
It seems like every time someone comes up with a new "unbreakable security scheme" on slashdot their pitch always starts with something to the effect of "so we start with this USB key...". Such measures are more about physical security, than crypto security. All you are really saying is "good long keys are more secure", which everyone already knows.
I might as well say, "Well if I light my computer on fire (and use longer keys) then ninjas won't be able to steal it".
Oh come on, use your imagination a little, I know they will! This clearly falls under the DMCA because in this scenario the cd player is a copyright protection circumvention device!
The cameras in people's homes are a UK Gov plan that the councils have no choice but to follow - blame the cabinet for that cracking idea
There is always an alternative choice, though it may not be the most pleasant of things to think about. Us American's kicked your government to the curb over a few tax disputes (and a few other issues). Placing cameras in private citizens' homes seem to me like a much bigger issue.
You guys could at least throw a few riots or something. And no, angry postings on slashdot do not count. By excusing this sort of behaviour all you are doing is shifting blame from your government to yourself.
I have never understood why saxon genitives cannot be used with pronouns. I don't buy the "but then they would get confused with contractions!" argument, since when do we make grammatical exceptions for contractions?
Integer arithmetic does not accumulate error, only floating point does that. Now they may have been using floating point, but his point is they should have been using integer arithmetic.
Had they been doing so, it could have run for 13 years with absolutely no accumulated error.
Believe it or not, not everyone shares your interests. It's ok that it's not something you are into (I'm not into that sort of thing either) but that doesn't mean you should belittle him for it.
Because he probably damn well enjoys a challenge and this is his idea of fun. If that concept honestly escaped you then I must agree with the GP, what the hell are you doing on slashdot?
The evil people you are so concerned about protecting these people from are fucking pricks like you. Abusing their network because you are afraid someone might abuse their network is so fucking hypocritical it's sickening. Not to mention someone who actually things WEP is more secure than WPA/TKIP (or secure at all) is a fucking dumbass and has no right lecturing others about security.
I think that the misuse of "your" shows that this post was entirely made up. If this slashdotter is a real MSFT employee, then it doesn't sound like someone from client performance team of the core product group.
Sorry, I just fail to see how overuse of the phrase "you know" signifies much of anything. You know?
If you knew about it, and told us it existed, then it would not in fact be "secrete" and thus not exist. Your absense of knowledge of this "super secrete" committee is similarly in no way prove of it's nonexistance. Furthermore, if the the committee does in fact exist and you are aware of it, then you denying its existance would be expected.
RMS would fork it and introduce meaningless incompatibilities
Last I checked RMS didn't do kernel work (outside of GNU HURD, and that does not count). He would have very little to do with implementing ZFS in linux.
You know, it might be wishful thinking but I'm sure people said the same thing about the East India Trading Company. Not only did they have the backing of the English Empire (which was quite a big deal back then), the bastards had their own navy.
An obsolete business model can bring even the largest of companies to their knees.

Nimrod.
Don't worry, knowing Negroponte this thing will be running Windows Vista by next year.

If someone sells me an invisible pink pony, I expect to receive an invisible pink pony.
How they deliver it is their issue, not mine, and why I need one is my issue, not theirs.

I am fascinated by this world of yours in which "shit happening" precludes something from having "gone wrong".
I have never understood why saxon genitives cannot be used with pronouns. I don't buy the "but then they would get confused with contractions!" argument, since when do we make grammatical exceptions for contractions?

Hezbollah are Lebonese, Hamas are Palestinian.
But honestly, they are both assholes so practical differences for someone not concerned about the intricacies of thier politics are irrelevant.

Whoever modded this up needs too turn in their geek card. Now.
An anonymous coward being this ignorant I can tolerate but for a mod to agree with this is a crime against all that slashdot once was.

tl;dr: You are a worthless piece of shit.
Coffee is my collision avoidance system. It keeps me sane enought to avoid driving my car into opposing lanes of traffic.
I don't doubt it, I was simply pointing out the absurdity in his reasoning.

See, this statement is logically flawed.
If you knew about it, and told us it existed, then it would not in fact be "secrete" and thus not exist. I never heard of them, what do they do? Are the the ones that came up with "PIN Numbers" by any chance?
A possible upside to private insurance companies doing this is that if they accept you, you know you probably don't need it so bad after all!

I honestly didn't think that Nextstep was still even in the running anymore.
