although they say in the cited article that there are some scientific problems with the planet as presented -but I get the feeling that it's more about action/adventure than science....
Amen to Community Colleges -some have really good online programs.
I've taken about 200 units over the past 15 years (and still only an AS degree to show for it) in mostly IT and programming at Deanza and Foothill colleges.
they use a pretty good online system called Etudes: Etudes is a course management system based on the Sakai framework. Sakai is distributed as open source software under the Educational Community License.
I used this book at Foothill college in an intro to data management class and it taught me more than any of the dozen oracle classes I took once I got past the terminology of tuples, etc

The staffers, the White House said, were using e-mail accounts, laptops and BlackBerries provided by the Republican National Committee for official executive branch communications rather than the exclusively political work for which they were intended. Because the RNC had a policy until 2004 of erasing all e-mails on its servers after 30 days, including those by White House staffers, and because some of those staffers may have deleted e-mails on their own, the White House said it could not assure Congress that they have not violated the PRA, which requires the retention of official White House documents. The White House officials who may have broken the law include senior adviser Karl Rove, his deputies and much of their staffs.
and AFAIK none of them got into the least bit of trouble for it (although Rove was eventually convicted of doing other bad things)
because the results are the same if you are watching the race online or if you are there in person. If there is a 'fix' on the race it will affect online and live bettors exactly the same.
Also, in satellite wagering as opposed to casino wagering you are actually part of the live track's betting pool so you get the track odds.
Whereas the Nevada casinos (and probably the other ones) actually cap the payouts for longshots because they were burned pretty badly about 25 years ago or so when some folks with 'inside' information put down some huge longshot bets and broke the bank.
This was before they decided to charge $30 or more a month for a 'smartphone' plan which is why I opted for a Blackjack 2 which would work with MediaNet instead of an iPhone or crackberry which would cost me another $180 a year just in the difference between those 2 plans let alone about $2-300 more up front.
it's a little better than that -the backroom (3/4 of a huge warehouse) has dozens of telco racks, lots of old token ring and even stranger networking gear as well as lots of cabling equipment.
In the front area you can buy old sgis and sparcstations for a pittance and they also have a cool looking touchpad linux barebones (no case) for ~$200 iirc
definitely geek heaven for sili valley -others mentioned Halted or Haltec, but that is more of a parts emporium although they do have some weird stuff too.
Although Google, et al can chip away at our privacy this would completely stifle free speech and dissent.
I know that some view ACs and their ilk as idiots clogging up discourse, but for a flip side of the coin how about the efforts to 'Out' Prop 8 contributors in Calif so they can be harrassed by gay activists?
-Not that I supported prop 8, but I do mod ACs up if they have something useful/interesting to say.
On the other hand, I don't disagree that there should perhaps be some required qualifications for hosting/administering websites, dealing with credit card transactions, userdbs, etc, but that is very different than (what I think) is being proposed.
Artists did not always make money through concerts only -as several posters note below most of the great baroque and classical composers had patronage of church or nobility or other wealthy parties.
Beethoven though -he relied on publishing for much of his income as well as a consortium of subscribers.
bands like Marillion have been going the fanclub subsidized route, but they had years with traditional record companies and touring to build up an audience as well.

Actually, the Bushies DID do something like this:

I lucked into something like this for my Moto smartphone about 6 years ago.
the plan is Media Net it's $15 a month for unlimited access (but they nail you on international roaming):
