Hey. If you wiki you will see that there are viruses for Linux (I think the count is 4000ish), and below is a link to at least one Mac virus that I could find on Wikipedia (one search, I am lazy)
I agree strongly with the sentiment that Antivirus for Linux and MacOS are largely to protect against spreading windows virii
If you pass along an infected e-mail you are spreading a virus that could have stopped with you.
Another point to consider is weaknesses in other applications such as flash, Macoffice, silverlight (wich has a Linux beta) and so on.
OS vulnerability (or lack thereof) is only part of the puzzle.
If you are running apache php and firefox a simple script will crash your whole system regardless of OS.
A simple script along the lines of while $value is less than 1000000000 do value+1 and echo "the value is".$value
(I put in an EXTREMELY simplified version since/. did not want to show the full script, but most of you guys should get the idea)
In fact I embedded it in php and I caused my machine to run out of memory and lock up by simply accessing localhost in firefox. This is on an ubuntu box, running apache and FF with PHP.
If you are creative you can get up to a lot of mischief, regardless of platform.
The housing market is crap already, adding other overheads won't make things better. And I bet the cable companies/isp's would not like the idea of joe sixpack competing with them.
Intel might be Microsofts biggest partner (I might be wrong here, but still) and HP bought the lie.
I am guessing that the HP tantrum is not only about being cheated, but also about being suckered, and they knew they bought a lie before it came to light.
Fool me once, shame on me, fool me twice shame on you?
Question is, will there be a "fool me twice" in this relationship? Will Microsoft get the chance?
Well truth be told I have both on my laptop at the moment.
I guess because I am more "used to" Firefox I continue using it - Opera is quick though, and I like both for their unique features that make them so good.
I especially like te Opera dialler - really nifty.
Won't a vibrating phone with this technology enabled cause some issues? Or not cleanly picking up the phone might end a call.
And another thing - how long before some huge corporation buys the rights to this technology (or patents it) and puts this out of reach of most consumers?
Yes he did in fact - I am betting his is an anomalous case.
Not one of us other linux users (a mixture of Linux Mint/Gentoo (me) Gentoo (colleague), Mandriva(intern) and Ubuntu 8.10 (Another Colleague) have any problems whatsoever.
And yes, we are majourly outnumbered at our office.
Heh - you are right, on face value it seems mean spirited doesn't it.
Truth be told we have a good in-office spirit, he already ribbed me about him going to the "other team"
Just last week I penned "come over to the dark side - we have sudo" on a whiteboard in the Microsoft Dev's office (where I am sitting - a sysadmin gets no justice I tell you)
And that's exactly what I have been trying to tell him.
Granted his wireless issues under Ubuntu is unlike anything I have come across before - but I am guessing it has something to do with his wireless mouse - as soon as he stops moving it his wireless network connection drops.

I use planner.
Have you tried it? I find it is adequate for my needs. Mind you I am not the most hardcore project management user out there...
Parent being modded funny is probably the funniest response there could be to his question...

Hmm... has someone Yangked his chain at last?
(Sorry, It's horrible I know, but I could not resist...)
Question - Does it run on Linux?
Answer - Why Yes it DOES!
Q - Does it run on Windows?
A - Uh, no - it seems for once the Linux Desktop holds precedent over it's Windows counterpart...
Q - Uh, okay, how about MacOS?
A - Nope - you will have to wait in line for it, wanna try Linux in the meantime?
This was bound to happen sometime. (does a little victory dance...)\o/

You know what? So what if firefox is not completely free?
It is a superior piece of software - I would use it in preference of IE even if it were completely proprietary.
I would give Opera a more serious consideration if that were the case though.
Yeah - I found them too. A while back I was browsing though the site and was aiming a bit higher than those that offer Ubuntu as an OS.
Is it just me or do Dell not take their Ubuntu offers seriously?
Was this on any machines running Ubuntu?
Btw, what happened to the Dell+Ubuntu offers that I can no longer find on their site?
Or am I looking in the wrong place...

Why yes, I AM happier...
So, open source is cheaper, AND appears to give good results?
Why am I not surprised?
haha.
Yeah - and then all you happy healthy people will look stupid one day lying there: dying from nothing.
(on edit: I do not hope you will die soon, of course)

And what - happy people hang out on Slashdot??

Hmmm Aswira Rai vs Liv Tyler for eyecandy...
choices... choices.
So how long before there is a bollywood musical on this?
I don't know why but the term "go apeshit" always makes me laugh...
(to both the above)

Maybe I should've clarified my statement.
Apologies.
After that - Windows 7ven of 9 - sexy and efficient.
Sorry, your comment just gave me flashbacks of her in a tight trekkie uniform...

Go figure...
