    Watts = Volts * Amps
for DC, AC gets a little more complicated but this device is DC

The article states it produces nano amps... thats 10 to the -9 power, being extremely generous and allowing it to produce a 10V potential (it probably makes quite a bit less than one volt) still ends up producing only 0.00000001 Watts.

The article isn't clear though on the scale of their nano amp producing prototype though... How much of that little device he's holding is the actual generating mechanism.

  4. Prototype doesn't produce 4W... on Georgia Tech Unveils Prototype Nanogenerator · · Score: 2, Informative

FTA: "...the generators produce a direct current output in the nano-Ampere range."

Summary could be a little more accurate, seems that in absolutely perfect conditions it could mathematically produce 4W. Who knows what the real world efficiency would be.

"...with optimization, their nanogenerator could produce as much as 4 watts per cubic centimeter - based on a calculation for a single nanowire."

Still could be a very useful device, especially if it's durable enough and can be produced cheaply enough to integrate into clothing or maybe even larger areas.

1942 didn't have the "persistent" features 2142 has. 2142 has a ranking system and item unlocks based on points acquired in game. EA maintains the database of your ranks/stats/unlocks so you need to log in to them when you start an online session, and no one really plays offline. Your account is tied to the game's SN, so if you want to play online it's much more difficult to pirate the game in a traditional sense.

  8. Re:Why such heavy doors ? on NASA's Future Inflatable Lunar Base · · Score: 0

The dome presumably has walls like the inflatable modules that are currently being designed to be used in orbit, they are well over a foot thick and made of various layers of high strength materials. The doors are also a large flat surface, they need to be quite rigid not to deform and leak under the pressure indoors and the vacuum outside. Definitely not made of steel either, probably some lightweight alloy.

Where did it say they were planning on slamming the capsule into the ground at terminal velocity? The article stated a speed of 18mph, thats with parachutes. At that speed water is way softer than the ground.

Jumping off the golden gate will get you up to about 75mph when you hit the water. People have actually survived the drop by having extremely good form and a little luck when they hit the water. Needless to say no amount of form will keep you alive if you slam into concrete at that speed.

I can't imagine any company stupid enough to force you to watch ads, but billboards and such spread around in cities aren't too intrusive (in an appropriate setting) . It could also mean the difference between an online game staying afloat when the player population begins to decline.

FunCom introduced advertising in parallel with free basic accounts (no expansions) in Anarchy Online, paying customers can shut off the ads if they want. Currently I believe their advertising revenues are higher than their subscription revenues.

  12. Re:Problem with his test method on Dell Laptops Have Shocking New Problem · · Score: 0

I've seen several desktop PCs with 65VAC at the chassis. It has always been caused by a faulty ground. PCs see this a lot because the electronics used in surge protectors/power bars require a ground. When the plug isn't properly grounded, normally grounded items upstream from it will "float".

I'm not familiar with the power supplies used for this laptop, but it could be a similar problem. I didn't even see in the article weather or not it was plugged in.

Lots of things that seem like a good ground may not be, I had a refrigerator in an apartment that used a grounded plug connected to a splitter, turns out the splitter wasn't grounded so the whole refrigerator sat at 65VAC, it was fine until I leaned against it while stirring a pot on the stove, every time I touched the bottom of the pot with the metal spoon I felt bit of a tingly sensation.

  13. No surprise... on The Insanely Great Songs Apple Won't Let You Hear · · Score: 0

"why shouldn't iTunes be the great mythical omniscient music repository where all the world's music is available instantly? Is this simply a marketing decision?"

I imagine thats exactly what it is, a marketing decision. The average customer has very minor interest in foreign music (i.e. in a language they don't understand) so rather than inundating them with the latest hits from around the globe they stick with what will sell thousands of copies, not 10-20.

Of course they are losing out on business if you can't even search for these bands in certain areas, but there may be licensing and copyright issues for them to consider also.

Twinking in an MMO is part of the game mechanics, nothing like cheating. If someone goes through the effort of gathering the rare items that allow them to equip better gear then they deserve the advantage they have.

You don't get mad at the person who ran around an FPS map gathing weapons, ammo, and armor before opening up on you, or do you expect them to only fight with the default handgun?

Hacker/mod cheaters should be banned and are really only showing their lack of skill at playing the game.

I watched a Discovery channel show that had a story about inflatable modules. They are not thin walled at all but actually over a foot thick. On top of that the layers of materials that make up the walls (kevlar, etc...) are extremely resistant to small impacts because of their resiliance and strength as well as being at least partially self sealing. The flexibility also makes the whole structure resistant to little accidents when trying to dock with it.
