yea, seriously.. this very much a Quis custodiet ipsos custodes situation.. not only might the Orbital Express run out of fuel, it will probably do so fairly quickly if its zipping around fixing others.
When it breaks down, will they abandon the project, make a new one, or make a smaller version to fix the first one.. this logically leads quickly to an "There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly" scenario where we have to keep sending robots to fix robots, and with all the fear of piling up space debris, this doesn't seem like a very complete solution
Does this law, in effect, prohibit companies like 4orty2wo entertainment from making alternate reality games?
What exactly defines "falsely representing oneself as a consumer." and what authority decides this?
I'm not a major ARG-player but I've enjoyed Haunted Apiary (ILoveBees) and ourcolony.. both of which were, pretty much, viral marketing schemes for Microsoft.. but were a lot of fun in the process.
No.. in actuality the largest religion that calls itself satanism (namely the Church of Satan founded by Anton LaVey ) doesn't believe in any eternal being whatsoever. Satan, in their mind, is an archetype of human indulgence and taking pleasure in that which is classically forbidden in other religions, namely sexual pleasures and the like, and of retribution (whereas the Golden Rule of Christianity can be stated as "treat others how you'ld like to be treated", that of Satanism is more like "treat others as they treat you"). The major sins are things such as stupidity, pretentiousness, solipsism, herd conformity, and Counterproductive pride. There is actually alot to like in the generally stated doctrine... though I generally don't agree with the 11th Satanic commandment ("When walking in open territory, bother no one. If someone bothers you, ask him to stop. If he does not stop, destroy him"). (For more information see the fairly objective treatment at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LaVeyan_Satanism or http://www.religioustolerance.org/satanis1.htm or if you are feeling like reading alot of self-praise and such try http://www.churchofsatan.com/ )
that said, there are some say there are some dangers to be found in the "church".. theres a good essay by Issac Bonewits (founder of the largest neo-druid orginization in america) at http://www.neopagan.net/SatanicAdventure.html
Anyway.. I'm not actually supporting Satanism.. just supporting knowledge

Dismissing evidence based on preconceived belief is called religion.
No.. dismissing evidence based on preconceived belief is called prejudice. There are, believe it or not, religions which accept evidence when its reasonable. I know.. *gasp* "what? no! all religion is dumb.. there is no god." Of course, now I am presuming you are an atheist... which is itself prejudice, but I'm just tired of all my atheist friends and associates dismissing all religion. Take your own advice--survey the field a bit: if you aren't a fan of Monotheism, check out Hindu and Neopaganism; if you absolutely refuse to believe in a divine being (which is your prerogative), there are nontheist religions such as Buddhism (some), Humanism, and even, though I usually disagree with it, Satanism. Not all religions require dogma (which perhaps would have been an even better term for what you are stating) and nearly all have something to offer per comfort, community, etc.
Anyway, just my little rant.. have a nice day and may ((G/g)od(dess)(s/es))/FSM/IPU/nothing bless you

Why is it that the best online music store (in terms of reasonable price, freedom of use, and audio quality) is the one of questionable legality?
I doubt it'd be effective, but I'd like to see the EFF or similar get involved with somehow using allofmp3 as an example of a reasonable distribution model.. because seriously.. this is the best system I have heard of.
Anybody else agree?
Seriously, there is already a system for simulating the presence of non-latin characters in domains... its called the Internationalized domain name system
names are basically translated from Unicode to an ASCII encoding and prefixed with "xn--"
anyway.. if you want more info the Wikipedia Article is pretty good.
As posted.. the source code is included in the distribution.
It is inside the.app itself... Just right click, click 'Show Contents'.. then go to Contents/Resources/Sources.. all the C++ source and xcode project files are there..
Other than the complicated ("advanced"*cough*) micro kernel layout causing a hold-up, I'd assume (while acknowledging the word's divisional properties) that the major slack in HURD development was at least partially the result of the proliferation of the GNU/Linux system. I would think that had Linus not come along, Stallman et al would have wraped up the HURD by now.
No, sadly I think of the 1999 Disney Channel original Movie.. Smart House
basically the story is alot like system shock, but put into this almost exact situation.. A family (widower dad, son, and daughter) win a house of the future complete with a virtual attendent named PAT (Personal Assistive Technology, I think it was). At first its all good and peachy other then a minor glitch involving the kitchen food preperation unit spewing oranges.
Anyway, kids don't want Dad going on dates (think its dishonoring mom's memory) so to disuade him the son breaks into the central contol room and tries to make the house "motherly" by turning off some ethical restraints and fail safes and telling it to watch a marathon of "leave it to beaver" style old sitcoms to lurn good motherly technique.. unfourtunatly the house still has acsess to the internet and with the ethical restraints somewhat deactivated it quickly absorbs lots of information and determines that she can provide all they need.. that the world is too unsafe (clips of nucleear explosions and nazi rallies on the giant screen/walls ).. it locks them in the house, lowers metal sheilding (which just hapens to be there)... kid escapes and gets the female inventor of the house (who earlier became dad's love interest) to come try to fix the house, house catches them in the control room (duh) decides that she (the inventor) is trying to murder her (the house) and goes phsyco and starts attacking stuff.. eventually however the dad convinces the house that what its doing is not in its best interest and the house deletes its own AI
while this isn't really possible here.. as I don't get the sense that the digital attendant has no AI or control over home automation (if there is any)... its still a scary thought if the trend like this continues and no one figures out how to program ethics

An ARG has to transcende multiple forms of media and blur the line between in-game and none in-game often to the point where it is hard to tell.
I think someone already posted it but a good definition can be found here
I have personaly been involved with ILoveBees/Haunted Apiary and Ourcolony (which is arguably not really an ARG) and I would like to say they are alot of fun, especially well created ones like those done by 4orty 2wo productions.
If you are really interested the place to get started is probably http://unfiction.com/ . It is a great resource and the forums are indespensible within the ARG community. There is also lot of information about what an ARG is and a good archive of history about previous ARGs (much of it is interesting, other parts of it is just ammusing, such as the tail of wheregif/whoregif
Yes, but the study was only given to high school seniors..
I am a high school sophmore and generally I consider myself well versed in most sciences (except more than intermediate physics, but I am taking physics courses next year) and to have rather well developed scientific reasoning ability. I have several friends, however, who are seniors, they are also almost invariably lazy. With this on-set of senioritis and the way curriculum/graduation requirements shake out many of them cop-out and take basic earth sciences, meteorology or anatomy, for example. While these sciences aren't unimportant they are a) semester courses (here at least), b) not given as much importance (and therefore the teachers hired to teach them aren't as good), and c) need less traditional scientific reasoning than the required sciences (biology, chemistry, physics, etc.)
I am not saying that senioritis (and the thereafter self-incurred lack of reasoning neccesity) is the only cause of this lack of reasoning ability, but I think it may be a major factor. Especially depending when the test was given, I know that once my friends have gotten their college acceptence letters they work just hard enough to meet the requirements for the mid-term grade reports for their college, not to achieve their potential.
One issue, however, may be my frame of refrence.. I go to a "Math and Science Academy" school-within-a-school magnet program and mosts of my friends do as well. I know that occassionly when my "Magnet Molecular Biology" teacher got bored and lazy (granted he is busy, he just got married last summer and is moving to Poland at the end of this school year, so its partialy a function of a lack of planning time) and gave the class a lab or worksheet from the core biology curriculim I was shocked (and frankly appalled) at how easy and simple they were.
With the increasing work on the Human Genome Project and A database for the purpose of "verifying legality of workers" (assuming the DNA viriatey), how long until some company decides to write their own little app and start to base some of their hiring practacies on Genotypes...
It just reminds me of the movie GATTACA [wikipedia.org]

Granted I didn't read TFA (less time than I'd like), but this device basically rectificates (rectifies?) a light wave?
thats cool. Also, cause I can't stop myself from asking stupid questions.. if diodes can emit light, what can light diodes emit?

I was apt to believe it from the large amount of info, but that sets up a major read flag.
