How is the above post a troll? Seriously, Slashdot should dump this whole moderating system, it's totally shit and completely worthless.

Yes, I understand the point but, even if such a patch were to be applied, it would be discovered soon enough.

Frankly, people are a bit too paranoid about the US government.

I don't really believe that Windows would transmit anything to the government (and I don't even live in the states so whatever). Someone would have figured it out a long, long time ago. Seemingly everything is hacked, cracked and exposed these days, Microsoft is under constant scrutiny, and I'm sure a lot of paranoid people have been trying to find out if Windows is sending sensitive data to Microsoft.

Or, you know, people just like playing their collection of video games or playing with their limited edition Metroid dolls, and it's as simple as that?

I'm sure most people who make sweeping statements like "material possessions don't matter" wouldn't be too happy if Tyler Durden blew up their apartment. In fact, why do these people have computers, HDTVs, game consoles and all other types of junk? Just get rid of it all, and show the world that meaningless physical objects are irrelevant to your enlightened zen lifestyle.

There were great computer soundtracks back in at LEAST the mid 80s, if not earlier.

I know for a fact that Last Ninja 2's soundtrack from 1988 (Commodore 64) is one of the best ever. Matt Gray even covered some Tangerine Dream music for it.

Hah, it'll be interesting to see how enthusiastically people will download gigabytes upon gigabytes of data with their crazy fast 512/512 pipes! It's not like everyone in the developed world is surfing with some insanely fast connection that can download full games in a matter of hours. In Finland, even 2048/512 is too expensive for me, and I doubt the situation is going to get any better.

Still, I think TFA overstated the case.

That would be an understatement. There are many good old games, like a few Amiga games that I've played recently on WinUAE. Games made for the Amiga, SNES etc. have aged well because by then graphics were already advanced enough to allow for nice looking 2D art (Chrono Trigger, or Chaos Engine for the Amiga). Of course, I still like some NES and C-64 games too.

Haven't played them so I can't really comment. I remember it being pretty easy to tell what was 3D and what was 2D in the PS1 Resi games.

Have a look at this, this or this. The characters blend very well. The difference between the original and the remake are pretty obvious.

It's a good point rhough - Resident Evil games (pre Resi 4) are basically adventure games with extra zombies. The genre seems less dead the more you think about it.

If Resident Evil had lots of dialogue, it wouldn't be much different from Dreamfall.

As I recall, this is how (off the top of my head) Grim Fandango, Monkey Island 4, and Longest Journey worked.

Yes, of course, but the graphical level of RE/RE0 is superb, so the quality of graphics should be a non-issue.

  17. Re:Graphical quality? on Nintendo To Be the Hero of the Adventure Genre? · · Score: 1

Look at Resident Evil and Resident Evil Zero on the GameCube and tell me that their engine wouldn't be perfect for an adventure game. The backgrounds are 2D, but the 3D models blend into them perfectly, and the graphics are quite stunning.

An alternate solution would be a fully 3D engine with fixed camera angles, which would far more flexible than having pre-rendered backgrounds, and would allow for things like dynamic lighting.

Zelda is not an adventure game, it's closer to a roleplaying game. Many, many, many adventure games (like several instance of Zork) and roleplaying games were released prior to Zelda. Even King's Quest and King's Quest II came two years before.
