OS/2 failed only in the marketplace, not the hearts and minds of the enlightened. I still use OS/2 on some of my older machines. Can not even install on newer hardware due to lack of drivers. OS/2 is still the most robust OS IMHO to ever be released. MVS for the PC.

offtopic but relevent. Y2K freakout had to run an inventory program to send a list of installed software to a server in the sky to check for Y2K readiness on every boot. Problem was there were OS/2 servers running in closets, under desks, that NEVER had to be rebooted. So the solution was to turn off the power to every building to force a reboot so the machines could report in. Windows machines, no problem, other than reporting too often.

I love OS/2, but with its demise in the marketplace, I was FORCED to switch to Linux and have not regretted it.

My daugter does support for some very rich and famous people. One of her best customers bought a new, top of the line, DELL for use with the stock market. This customer is very serious about making money, and had a T1 line installed. The DELL came with Vista, but the proprietary main application would not install or run, making the new machine and T1 line totally useless.

My daughter to the rescue, buy a copy of XP and install. But, no drivers for the RAID array for XP that she could find. I got involved walking her through disabling RAID in the BIOS. XP installed, application up and running, profit for the customer.

The customer should have had the option to get ANY OS with the machine from DELL.

Vista is a failure for the same reason OS/2 was a failure... APPLICATIONS!

Not a single Linux annoyance. What about open source applications? There must be some, somewhere.

I guess installing a new kernel and having to re-boot to finish the install would kind of qualify.

  6. Penguins? on Are Mobile Phones Wiping Out Bees? · · Score: 1
There is a direct corelation to the demise of bees with the proliferation of penguins, global warming, and Linux on the desktop.

    1. The penguins have to swim further out to reach the cold water where the fish are.

    2. The penquins exert more energy (heat), which warms the water making them swim even further.

    3. The warmer water is causing global warming

    4. Global warming is causing the bees to die off.

    5. Linux is loosely associated with penguins somehow.

They will record how much energy the birds are using in order to feed themselves. If the data shows they are making longer trips further into the oceans to find fish, it may prove waters are warming up and climate change is taking place.

The penquins are warming the water, causing them to go further to find cold water fish, which warms the water even more.

We are all doomed due to penquins.

When I hear Microsoft BoB, I think of the story of the Biker Babe that wanted a tattoo on her butt for her boyfriend, but only had enough money for 2 characters, so she had a big "B" on each cheek for "Biker Babe". When she pulled down her pants and bent over to show her boyfriend the tat, all he could say was "Who the (explitives deleted) is BoB?". Images of goatze... ewwww.

Something no one has mentioned yet is validation of choices. When there is more than one choice, it can be validated by the machine before the vote is cast. With a paper only ballot the voter can vote for two or more candidates for the same office. The ballot is invalid and becomes a null vote. Some votes for commisions have a choice of say 4 out of 9. Voting for 3 is valid, but 5 makes the entire list invalid. With e-magic voting, only valid votes are cast. Ever try to make more than one choice on a /. poll?
