from what i came to understood by reading you americans' posts on slashdot, american conservatives tend to label anything that is pro-freedom or free speech as 'left'.

In france, people living in bordeaux can board the train and make it to their jobs in paris, 400-500 km away, just in an hour or so.
in america, people suffer 1-1.5 hours of traffic to go to their jobs downtown.
the solution is simple. more, quality mass transportation. this way you can assure that life quality and independence of older citizens never deteriorates, and also you can save younger citizens from wasting their life away in traffic.
before you even attempt to think about it, you wont be escaping the effect of the global crash, REGARDLESS of what field, job you work in.
even if you are a military personnel, a smuggler, a mafia mob, any other shit, it doesnt matter. you are going to feel its effect this or that way, and feel it badly.

technology companies, manufacturers, auto makers, your local ma and pa shops, shipping agencies, airlines - every one of them is going to go bankrupt unless this is fixed.
