The most important sub culture for MSFT is that group of CIOs and CTOs of big corporations who should not hear about ODF, vendor-lock, upgrade-treadmill, defects in OOXML spec and other such nefarious and deleterious concepts. They all should get a carefully constructed message from their local MSFT sales manager. That is the most important subculture MSFT is talking about.
Let MSFT show that it wants others to implement OOXML seriously. Let is open source all the old defunct no longer supported/developed products source code to implement, "autospace like in Word 5" or "do page break in (what msft believes to be) word perfect 6 style". These were all deprecated anyway and its only function is to bring old legacy format documents upto the interoperable arena. But wait, that is the mother lode and the crown jewels. They are the fundamental vendor lock in procedures. Give them away? What an idiot I am to think MSFT would even consider it.
In a recent development MSFT spokesman said that, one standard specifying body meets all is not a viable workable solution for the whole world. Mr Tong'n Cheek said that Microsoft will promote an alternative standard specifying body Open ISO. He said that Microsoft wants its customers to have a choice in international bodies creating standards, choice in standards themselves too. This way users can have various choices like, OpenISO certified OOXML saving MSFT product, or ISO certified OOXML saving MSFT product or, uncertified OOXML saving MSFT product or unsupported ODF saving MSFT product or...
What can Sun Micro Systems bring to the table that rest of the Linux could not? Its name, some kind of relationships with corporations and provide "not a bunch of amateurs in their spare time, this OS is backed by professionals" kind of sales talk. But that niche is already occupied by IBM. As for SUNW's vaunted professionalism, they fumbled the lead they had in unix and are struggling to keep up. As for their corporate vision, these guys never realized until it was too late, that Windows OS was the loss leader, in grocery store parlance, and the real deal is the vendor lock in office documents, email addresses and calender applicaions. MSFT might have fumbled many balls and lacked vision on the technical side of the market, but when it comes to business side, MSFT has been nothing less than visionary in gunning for monopoly and achieving it. Now SUNW is going to take on Linux? yawn. Nothing to see here, move along, folks.
Looks like you thought about the idea way back in 1995. Would it qualify as invention, if you have not done the actual follow up work, crunch the numbers, did the heavy lifting to show it actually works?
Why are the lawyers paid in one full lump sum? What is the incentive for anyone, MSFT, the lawyers and the state to publicize the settlement and make sure all eligible customers actually get something? Why can't they make the lawyer fees a percentage of actual money paid out as compensation? Then these lawyers will be working overtime to publicize and make it easy to file and claim the refund. As it stands it benefits no one but the lawyers.
Fundamental problem with the monopoly abuse of MSFT is that the customers are not demanding better interoperability. The concept of interoperability is not all that hard for customers to comprehend. In fact people have always demanded interoperability. But MSFT successfully convinced the customers, interoperability is synonymous with MSFT compatibility. Only when customers demand true interoperability, things will change. All the law suits and antitrust actions will either strengthen the hand of MSFT by pushing people who are wary of govt regulation into the MSFT camp.
1. First you have not proved or shown any data to the claims that nerdier people are more economically successful or for the claim that they tend to be libertarians.
2. Even if there is a correlation, it does not prove causation. Nerdiness, wealth and libertarian beliefs... which is the cause and which is the effect?
3. You use the terminology left (and right by default). These labels are inadequate to describe the political beliefs of a person. Traditionally Left stands for lots of liberties in the social arena and mostly restrictions on economic activities. Not necessarily unreasonable restrictions, but restrictions nonetheless. And Right stands for lots of liberties for corporate and economic activities, but severe restrictions on social liberties, again not necessarily all unreasonable. A true libertarian will stand for freedoms and liberties in both the corporate/fiscal arena as well as social arena. And a true libertarian will also stand for rights as well as responsibilities on the exercise of the liberties. There are very few true libertarians. Sometimes libertarianism appears to be an ideal that will never be practical. Please don't say, if everyone becomes a true lib, because a practical working system should work even if all parts of the society does not believe or agree with the principle. A libertarian can not impose even libertarianism on an unwilling population. S it is tougher than you probably imagine.
Though many Indians now own PCs, they [I mean the PCs, not the Indians;-)] are still considered a luxury items. Further the replacement time is quite large in India. Most people use internet cafes on a regular basis to access the net. So, yeah, there are plenty of old computers running old OSes in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh etc. So a bank site would still target a 800x600 screen. And then clueless managers will waste the screen real estate with useless stuff and links.
I also have several sites that I use for financial purposes, and they all support Firefox. If they didn't, I'd either switch institutions, or not use their site
I can personally vouch that the following financial institutions support Firefox, and
I did not have to chew anyone's ears or fiddle with agent strings. Vanguard, Schwab, Dollar Bank, Citizens Bank, Smith Barney, Fidelity, MFS, Ameritrade, NDB (might be defunct now).
And if an Financial institution does not support FireFox, it does not get my business.

IANAL, but I was under the impression only Baseball is exempted from Sherman Antitrust Act by an explicit act of the Congress. Other leagues don't have the official protection, but might enjoy de-facto protection which they are not really entitled to. But anyway all parts of this posting is
for the exclusive benefit of Slash readership only. All other uses are prohibited by me.
I clicked on the first link and You Tube is still dishing out the video as of 8/30/2007 8:50 AM.
So they they have not issued a take down notice to You Tube. What does it mean? Why? Is it possible
that, they tried to issue a "take down" notice and You Tube is showing some rudimentary back bone and is asking Viacomm to substantiate the claim?
He did not record the security camera footage and upload it to You Tube? Dumb idiot. This is what dumbing down of America has done to the respectable profession of robbery.
Yes, if it is not directly from MSFT it could be compromised. So dont go about hiring sys admins yourself. Even if they have some paper saying they are MSFT certified. You should only hire Genuine Microsoft Employee to come to your site and do site maintenance. And also you should not plug into any generic Internet. Only Genuine Microsoft Internet is really really secure. And dont even think of using a Non Microsoft Keyboard or mouse or anything. If it is not Microsoft, it is not secure. Keep repeating that mantra for 48 days. You will attain salvation.
So what you seem to be saying is that, if OOXML gets voted in as a standard, MS-Office or atleast Excel might fail OOXML certification? That is probably good news because, if MSFT backs a truck full of money on the driveway of these committees and buy their votes, there is a second avenue open to challenge the adoption of MS-Office, claiming it does not comply with the OOXML standard. Right?
In most poor countries, the fruits of labor is not shared very well. The profits of exports will stay in the creamy layer of the society in the top. Most of the working peasants would find it difficult to buy food. In the first half of the twentieth century the plantation owners in the New World and Africa were frolicking in Paris and London while their labor force was working their fingers to the bone.
That set the stage for widespread support for Communism.
Almost all the politicians in India are falling over themselves to please MSFT. They crow about getting research facilities and other investments they attracted from MSFT. It is possible that some of the professional civil service corps produced a well reasoned arguments why India should vote against OOXML. But all it takes is a grand statement by MSFT that it is going to open another research center in Uttar Pradesh or Punjab. That will give an excuse for the very corrupt, best pol money can buy politicians of India, to overrule the civil service. It is nothing more than a simple ploy by the
Govt of India to wangle a better deal from MSFT. The only question is what they are wangling for. Something for the country or something for themselves.
Easy. Theory of Intelligent Illusions. Created to test our faith. Being faithful does not mean you seek evidence of existence for God, it means believing in God despite overwhelming evidence for His non existence. Of course you need to add a little bit more mumbo jumbo. There you have it. The gullible will be persuaded to pay their tithe and they will be made to feel guilty for giving 10% of net, instead of 10% of gross.
Aum MSFT! Aum MSFT!! Aum MSFT!!!
Become... one... with... MSFT!!!
Aum Nirvana.
Aum Shantih Shantih Shantihhiii

Sad it is Earth. If it is Tattoonie, a small boy who builds pod racers in his sparetime will build a scanner for it.

It is easily explained by the Theory of Intelligent Arranger.
