  1. Unsanity's SafariNoTimeout on Apple Releases Mac OS X 10.2.6 · · Score: 3, Informative

SafariNoTimeout is a little utility that removes the 60 second connection timeout from Safari.

Without it on my dial-up connection, Safari is virtually useless while downloading and/or with a few tabs loading at once.

It should make Safari useful again for you. It sure did for me.

  5. A Safari port would be one less reason to switch.. on Apple is Porting iTunes to Windows · · Score: 1
"Apple can help their long term position by leveling the internet playing field and thus making migration to a non Windows platform that much smoother."
But if Apple make a habit of porting their applications to Windows, why bother migrating at all - people will just "expect" each app to be ported sooner or later.

Besides, Safari for Windows wouldn't create a revene stream. iTunes for Windows, with the Music Store, does create a revenue stream. Remember, these companies do exist to make money after all...

Anyway, as nice a browser as Safari may be (I've been using it as my default browser since the first build with tabs emerged), it's hardly a killer app - it was a required app to bring a truly decent browser to OS X. Safari for Windows will not ever happen. If you're really that impressed by Safari, download WebCore or KHTML and build a browser around it. A quick Google search for "khtml" finds a KHTML Win32 port on SourceForge, so get going... ;)

You realise the GPL is a copyright, don't you? As stated at gnu.org:
To copyleft a program, we first state that it is copyrighted; then we add distribution terms, which are a legal instrument that gives everyone the rights to use, modify, and redistribute the program's code or any program derived from it but only if the distribution terms are unchanged.
Both the GPL and music licensing are forms of copyright, they are just very different uses of copyright.

Interesting - this locked up your entire system? On dial-up, I've seen it cause Finder to lock up and need a Force Quit, but never lock the entire OS. I've just followed mbkkelsey's advice and used Vince to change the ftp 'helper' application. In my quick test, I used Transmit and it worked flawlessly.

Of course, it would still be a whole lot nicer if Safari could handle the FTP itself, just like virtually every other modern browser...
  11. Isn't that what I said? on Firefly Coming to DVD · · Score: 1

"They'll probably end up making more money selling the "extra" episodes on DVD than they would have by putting the shows on the air."

    My point exactly.

Like I said, if more money is to be made in selling DVDs than broadcasting, broadcasting could simply become a means to convince people to buy DVDs.

  12. Buy the DVDs, win a TV show? on Firefly Coming to DVD · · Score: 5, Interesting

"...it seems that Fox has decided that there's not enough viewers to keep the Firefly series on the air, but somehow there's enough fans to make money off DVD sales. Go figure."

I'm going to be uncharacteristically non-cynical for a moment, and suggest an alternate theory. Perhaps Fox will see how many DVD sets are sold, and if sales are surprisingly high, continue the series.

TV production houses now undoubtedly see DVD sales as a huge revenue earner, most likely beginning to rival their traditional advertising and subscription income. Now, even if the series doesn't cover costs while being broadcast, the money from DVD sales could potentially more than make up for that. In that scenario, a series like FireFly would have a huge chance at success - but it would all depend on how much the fanbase truly does value the show.

The future of TV could become little more than DVD advertising, with the episodes shown on the air little more than fodder to lure people in. DVD sets then become the real product, and are sold riddled with bonuses, extra scenes, and eventually, as in this case, extra episodes.

So, maybe Fox will think there's enough viewers - if you cough up for the DVDs.

(Then again, what do I know? I've never watched FireFly, I have no experience with American cable TV at all! Armchair analysis is fun!)

Or Melbourne. And yes, usually conferences are held in one of those two. Travelling between those two by air is reasonably cheap and quick, and by car is feasible (at 'only' 10 hours) and dirt cheap. Well, compared to the cost and time of travelling either air or car from Sydney/Melbourne to Perth anyway.

"Don't be so insular - take a look around this country that we love (same goes for anyone else - have a look around your own country and marvel at its own beauty)."

There's a difference between being insular, and not being able to afford either the time or the money to travel across the country and back right now. Both post and undergraduate uni offers came out in the last week, which makes finding time (and the money!) to get across our sunburnt country a bit difficult...

Version 6.0 was just release (it's a Carbon app that runs on 8, 9, and X), and it's horribly slow, ugly looking, and uses non-standard keyboard shortcuts. I had very high hopes for Opera on the Mac, but this release has all but shattered them for me. It's almost the exact opposite of Opera 6.0 on Windows.

I've been using Opera on Windows for the best part of 4 years, and swear by it. However, I don't even bother with it on my iBook. Perhaps when they eventually release Opera 7 for the Mac (which will be a *long* way off) things will be better, but I'm not holding my breath...
