For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first.
I've gotten a lot of pirated stuff over the years but I also buy the movies/music/games/software/etc. that I like and it being freely available makes no difference.
That sound you're hearing is a large contingent of black cars with dark tinted windows and government plates filled with suits getting ready to knock on your door.
LOL I can't stand Apple personally. But Flash? Adobe has destroyed something that was once a very cool thing. And they did it with shitty code and a development philosophy that completely ignored security concerns and opened one more door for attackers to use that requires no retardation ont he user's part.
All that's required is an adserver that doesn't do a very good job of screening ads that serves ads to a lot of sites and viola.
Can we please get to play with some of these emerging technologies before someone goes breaking them?
This is why we can't have nice things! You intellectuals and your tinkering....
I cut my teeth on MUDs. I played EQ for quite some time as an Enchanter and quit shortly after Gates of Discord was released because WoW was going to take its place.
And now I play WoW.
I'm also a bit of an elitist. Guys don't tell me how to play. Usually it's me telling them why they're wrong about (insert game mechanic here), the math behind it, and several links and/or websites detailing data that shows they are wrong and I am right.
I've been in Vent before chit chatting during random PuGs (most recently farming rep in ICC) and talk of mage specs came up. I was on my Disc Priest at the time, and asked a mage in the raid if they had a certain talent.
This sparked a big discussion about whether or not it was something good to spent points on.
The vent admin (who wasn't even in the damn raid) booted me because he was tired of listening to me, and the general consensus was that I didn't know wtf I was talking about.
About 3 people came up to me after the run was finished to talk about that and had me log my mage and explain why this particular talent was useful, and the approximate uptime of the buff during boss fights in raids.
All 3 of them (male) promptly went to switch the specs on their mages to include that talent.
The general attitude of "girls suck at games" is rampant. It's a stereotype, and one that I take particular enjoyment in absolutely demolishing.
But then people take the same attitude with guild names too. If a guild name doesn't drip testosterone, then it must be a shitty guild.
We've also destroyed that one.
Though I still want to find a sponser or something, and form a guild called "Pretty Pink Ponies" or something, maybe a Hello Kitty reference, and try and compete for world firsts. No real good reason other than to see the look on the faces of men who realized they have just been completely, utterly, and thoroughly destroyed.... by a GIRL!
The fact remains that in most sensible implementations, the user is unable to run arbitrary code outside his own directory./blockquote.
I do the same to Windows implementations. It really isn't difficult. I would consider doing that "sensible". So in most sensible Windows implementations, the user is unable to run arbitrary code outside zir own directory.
Stalemate.
I have achieved quite a bit in my short life, and I am a product not only of the public school system, but of public schools in the southern part of the USA. From arguably the dumbest area in the country, and from public school.
Yet I'm doing quite well for myself, and during a stint at a very large Fortune 100 company, people were shocked when they found out I didn't have a degree, and that I, in fact, barely graduated high school (damn near dropped out because of how terrible it was).
One's success or failure has little to do with their schooling, and more to do with their own drive and ambition.
Those who WANT to succeed will, regardless of what is put in front of them.
You stopped reading a bit too soon. Allow me to repost for you.
How do I know I am virus free? Because I know how to scan my system without installing AV. I know how my system should perform, and I know how to see what's running. I periodically check the health of my system by checking what's currently being accessed compared to what's running. I haven't found something out of place in years. Since about 2003 to be exact. Since that time I've had at least 2 machines that I haven't run any sort of protection on. There has yet to be a difference between the machines WITH AV, and the machines WIHTOUT AV.
I'll refrain from reiterating another point of my original post.
This article is little more than FUD aimed at Windows.
This just in, FIRE HOT!
I run without AV, and I haven't had a virus in years. The few things that ALMOST happened, were caused by exploits within Flash or Shockwave. Vista stopped those cold. Yes, VISTA.

Lesson Learned? Stupid users are stupid. And even the best AV won't protect from that. When I worked retail (shudder), the following was a fairly regular occurrence:
Me: So, it looks like your computer is severely infected. Without even running a scan I see about 30 different infections of viruses/spyware.
Them: Oh my, well how did I get them? I have (insert Popular Anti-Virus program here)!
Me: Well, I do see (insert random P2P app, shady internet history, random items in download directory, etc. here). That could be it. Also it looks like your (insert popular anti-virus here) has been turned off.
Them: Oh well yea everytime I (insert high risk activity here) it popped up and annoyed me so I turned it off.
Again, stupid users are stupid.
Totally shouldn't have been modded troll. And I agree, it's not something that can be measured and accounted for. A simple look at my parents shows that clearly. My family line is full of drug addicts and people suffering from various forms of psychosis.
I myself am bi-polar, in addition to have a tenuous grip on reality. The grip remains tenuous mostly because I take no medication and, in fact, refuse to because of how it affects my ability to think. I simply separate what is real, from everything else I perceive. I use the word "simply" because it is a matter of will, nothing more.
I have contributed a great deal to society thus far, and to the common good. At 25 I've lived a fuller life than most have by the time they're 50. 95% of the people that I went to school with (consider that group covers an age span of ~10 years) have become drains on society as a whole, or are trapped in destitute lives, and their most pressing concern is whether or not so and so is actually gay, or if so and so's man is sleeping around, or that so and so got their belly button pierced. These people have on average been married twice, have 2-5 children (that they can't provide for), and about half of them still live with their parents (some of them are going on 30 years old).
I was the person considered the least likely to amount to anything given my origins, my parents, and my situation growing up (bottom barrell poor). I have not only beat the odds, I have demolished many people's ideals on parenting. The people who raised "Perfect Little Angels" suddenly find themselves grand-parents with 2 generations of the family living with them 10 years after the first generation should have moved on.
And the question of intelligence is ENTIRELY subjective anyway. There is NO objective way to measure intelligence.
We're too busy slaving away at our jobs to bother with protesting something happening in some other country place cityt hing. What were they mad about again? Something about religion? Well they just haven't met Jesus yet, that's their problem.
Seriously though, given the shape our economy is in, even though MOST people don't think about it, they are reacting to it. Our economy is tanking, which at the same time is driving up the price for EVERYTHING, to include gas. A friend informs me this is "Stagflation". Stagnant Economy + Inflation = BAD. The American $ is falling, and hard. 1$ doesn't buy what it used to, so everything costs MORE. EVERYTHING. Money (our money) isn't worth as much as it once was, and so we find ourselves paying out more and more money continuously, ESPECIALLY with imported goods. Wages, however, have not increased to compensate us for this. So while making roughly the same amount of money over the last few years (assuming the joke of an annual 3-7% raise, if you even get one), CANNOT keep up with rising housing costs, fuel costs, electricity costs, food costs, etc.
In many places, it's impossible to live by yourself and have any kind of decent (by decent I mean non blood-soaked hallways, broken bottles flying through your windows, cars not being moved to cinder blocks in the middle of the night, etc) domicile unless you make an obscene amount of money, and even still rising costs of EVERYTHING will continue to eat away at that buffer.
So while many of us ARE outraged, and do speak out when we can, some people that are outraged don't really know WHY they're outraged, and can't be bothered to figure it out because they're too busy trying to figure out how they're going to pay rent this month.
By "this" i was speaking of the technology itself, not necessarily using Morocco to power Europe. That would be recklessly stupid at best.
Instead the point that I was driving at was the idea itself. Applied here (I live in the US), would it not make sense to take a chunk of land within each state, devote it to this, and have that provide the power for that state?
If this article's math is accurate (which is subject to some debate), then a very small chunk of land within each state (relatively speaking) would be able to power the state quite easily, to include the more populous ones such as California, New York, etc. They would simply need to devote a bit more land to the cause.
Your power distribution costs wouldn't be much higher (if not lower, strictly from a distribution standpoint) than they are now. Initial investment is incredibly high yes, but will pay dividends in the long run that far outweigh that (not just economical, or environmental, but also political). The same would apply anywhere this technology was used. Obviously nations would want to control their own power and NOT put it in the hands of a foreign power, but the idea that a small patch of land, ~13k^2 can provide power for ~1,000,000 km^2, then even assuming 10 times that needed for the US would still just mean 130,000km^2 to power all of the US, breaking that into chunks for each state (assuming the same from each state which wouldn't be the case) would be ~2600km^2 from each state.
That's not that much.
Hazards from Nuclear energy would be avoided (though I'm fully in favor of Nuclear Energy, but if there is something available that can work well with less risks, I'm all for that!)
Is this be the post-hydrocarbon world finally knocking?"
Only available in locations where ebonics be the #1 language suckah!
On a more serious note, 3% of Moroccos land mass could provide power for ALL of Western Europe? Can I ask what possible reason there could be beyond corruption and greed for this NOT to be used? Somehow I think that this kind of technology, no matter the initial cost, would be an absolute boon and can see no reason why it shouldn't be adopted.
Pollution form fossil fuels will be significantly reduced. We can finally move, at least on the consumer side, to mainly electric (no hybrid BS) vehicles, and overall be far better off than we are now. The health benefits are enormous, not to mention the economic and political benefit of nations no longer frothing at the mouth for oil.
While watching "The Mummy" on my HD-DVD player, and 1080p 42" HP MediaSmart Television (don't ask), I noticed Brendan Frazier has the cutest little bump on the right side of his nose.
You forgot the most important one!!!
"The researchers caution that we should be keeping watch for many more small, potentially earth-impacting asteroids than we are currently tracking."
It's life Jim but not as we know it. It's life Jim but not as we know it, not as we know it, not as we know it Captain!
Seriously though, why is it that life developing elsewhere MUST have sodium? The strictest definition of life doesn't require specific elements or chemicals to be present, only behaviors, or functions if you will. Ignoring something because it doesn't fit neatly with what WE need for life is absurd, ESPECIALLY when looking at something that far from the sun, and thus cold.
This was recently (within the last 6-12 months). And even if I restored the software, it didn't matter. The fact that I had done it at all, and that they knew about it was enough to void my warranty. I tried all the "official" channels before eventually just throwing my hands up, and using it as an excuse to get rid of the laptop. it had problems, so I took it to BBY for repair, they fixed it, sent it back (ironically, BBY's service plan underwriter paid HP to fix it), but when it got back, it had a cracked screen. So I got a nice shiny new laptop (after some discussion with management that had tried to blow me off, they had a new manager that just TOTALLY dropped the ball).
I understand that tech support has to follow the corporate doctrine and drink the corporate kool-aid. I know it wasn't the fault of the poor sap that answered the phone (other than just being an idiot for calling XP Pro a driver, then having the gall to argue with me about the distinction between an OS and a driver). I finally gave up and hung up the phone, and called back. While on hold i received an e-mail from HP saying that their records showed my warranty had recently expired (on a laptop that was less than 3 months old), and that I could purchase an extended warranty from them.
For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first.
