I'm a ruby on rails developer, but since you already have a backend in python, Django looks more appropiate for your particular case than Ruby on Rails. Django is different than RoR, but your RoR enthusiast will also find things to like there.
I would avoid PHP as much as I could - but that's just my personal opinion.
Sadly, but truly, you always have to be prepared for a stab in the back on business. If you don't do a proper study of your field and partners, you are not doing your job.
