Legality doesn't really enter into this, does it? It's legal for google to remove the blogs and its legal for google to not remove the blogs (unless there's a court order).
Basically they have a choice. Censor anything that might be offensive and then get the coveted Family Friendly(tm) status. Or they can simply say "If its illegal we'll take it down, If it's just offensive (but not illegal), then too bad".
Most Corps go with the Family Friendly approach. This appeals to a broader audience since they feel more comfortable when things have been sanitised. They can live their lives pretending that racism, bad words, and pre-marital sex doesn't exist. Google chose to tell its customers "you can say whatever you want, as long as its legal. If you get offended by this, welcome to the real world".
Although I don't think this is really google being brave and noble. The nature of being online is different from being Walmart or McDonald's. Freedom of speech is more highly valued by people who read blogs than by the people who shop at walmart.
Yes, but we do everything we can to reduce vehicle injuries. Speed limits, driving tests, safety inspections, air bags, etc. etc.
We do everything possible to reduce vehicle related injuries and fatalities. We do everything possible to reduce terrorist related injuries and fatalities. This is completely consistent.
Now I do believe that the policies currently being used to prevent terrorism are for the most part ineffective and should be changed. But you can't honestly argue that spending money to prevent terrorism is a waste simply because not as many people die from terrorism. You do that then you have to start putting dollar values on human lives. Much better to put our best effort into keeping people safe from both terrorism AND vehicle accidents. If "our best effort" in preventing terrorism costs more than "our best effort" in preventing accidents, then so be it.
Also, preventing accidents isn't so much of a money issue its more of a political issue. We could greatly reduce traffic accidents if we required everyone to submit to a driving test every five years and installed photo radar in every city to force people to drive the speed limit. Of course implementing these types of things would be political suicide. People die on the road because the mojority of drivers want to drive faster than the speed limit and don't want to be inconvenienced by driving tests occassionally.
she gets complements on it every day (years later), and, sad to say EVERYONE JUDGES OUR RELATIONSHIP BASED ON THE FRICKING ROCK. I can't tell you how many times she's heard "oh he must really love you" -- gak -- sad but true.
These people are ignorant. With a diamond you earn the respect of the ignorant and get nothing but disdain from the intelligent. You have proven to the world that the opinions of idiots is more important to you than the lives of Africans.
I guess its just a psychological thing. If the clock is ticking down there's a lot of pressure to get your stuff done quickly. If the clock is stopped you'll take a little more time and make sure things are done right. People just think better if they got about 20 minutes to do a five minute job than "if I don't get this done the rocket is going to blow up in 29:00.. 28:59.. 28:58.. 28:57... "
the earth was warmer durring the middle age warm period
Actually its warmer now than the Medieval Warm Period. Historical documents from that time are euro-centric. It may have been warmer in Europe then (although even that is questionable) but it was not warmer globally.
Just take a look at estimates on the temperatures in the MWP. Of the dozens of studies of this, not a single one of them shows the global temperature to be higher than it is today.
Nope. You just encrypt everything. Everyone gets a USB keychain (or something similar). You keep a backup copy of all the keys on discs which you store in a safe. The admin can still manage stuff, but can't actually read, only the owner of the key can. If a user requires assistance in finding a file in an encrypted filesystem, then the admin might have to use remote desktop (or visit in person) and find the file under the supervision of the user. If a user loses their key, the admin has to go to the vault, sign out the disc with the user's key and decrypt everything and reencrypt with a new key in the presence of his supervisor (and maybe the owner of the key too).
Yeah its a real pain in the ass to do this, and it will require a lot of extra training for the users, but it is possible.
You have to turst people somewhat, but you can encrypt your stuff. Maybe the admin would still be able to delete your mails, but he wouldn't be able to read them if they are encrypted.
We did have some terrorists making plots to attack various buildings. A brave muslim man turned them in because he didn't believe Canada to be an enemy of Islam.
Several other plots around the world were foiled by good intelligence. So far there have been no terrorist plots foiled by border security. Maybe, just maybe, good intelligence and the government having a good relationship with the Islamic community makes us more secure than stupid border guards?
Fair use is not a right its a defense. ie. You sue me for making a backup copy, I say "fair use", judge decides in my favour. I upload copyrighted material to a P2P site, I argue "fair use", the judge says, "sorry that isn't fair use you gotta pay up".
No one is required to give you the ability to make a backup copy. If you buy something thats DRM'd and you can't make a backup copy you should be able to take it back for a refund since the product didn't meet your expectations (depending on warranty laws in your area). But you cannot demand that a company give you the ability to make a backup copy in the format of your choice anymore than you can demand a flying car. If a company is unable or unwilling to offer you the product you want (DRM free music), your only option is to take your business elsewhere.
Actually your example is a great reason why drugs should be legalised. If drugs were legalised the addicts would get their drugs from government clinics instead of the drug dealers on the street.
The way the drug dealers operate is to get kids addicted ("the first one is free") and then jack up the price. If there were clinics this would change to get kids addicted, then the kids go to the clinic. Durg dealer loses money off this and goes out of business.
Once the street dealers are gone, hard drugs would only be available at the government clinics. There would be no one out there wanting to get more kids addicted. So your teenage daughter would be a lot less likely to see cocaine at a party.
But of course in today's politics a rational policy can't compete with the emotional parent of a dead child. Because the sheer force of emotion can somehow make people experts in matters of public policy.
sounds like what you're describing is more like a bouncer than a pimp. Although it is a grey area I guess. The relationship between pimp and ho is often very complicated.
So the second amendment applies to the Taliban, Al Qaeda, Janjaweed, various genocidal militias in the congo? Do you support the sale of AK-47s to Al Qaeda?
When we're talking about small arms trafficking we aren't talking about some American Patriot want to buy a musket for his weekend reenactment of the American Revolution. We are talking about some very bad people getting weapons with which they plan on doing some very bad things.
Many third world countries are de facto provinces of the American Empire. To be able to make any change in the American Empire you have to change America. And its hard to change America from one of its minor colonies.
rfc2782 allows for DNS servers to return a list of ips to clients with info on priorities and weights. This would allow browsers to seamlessly switch to a backup server if the primary server went down, which would greatly improve website availability. Unfortunately, from what I can tell, there are no browsers out there that support this.
Is there any possibility that IE will support this?
Why bother? If a law doesn't work for the next generation, then they can change it. The problem with constitutions is that you end up being ruled by dead people. And as smart as those people were, they can't adapt to the problems of a more modern age. Because they are dead.
America has this puritanical streak that seems to permeate its politics. You worship your constitution the same as you worship the bible. The constitution was written to last about 25 years, after which there would be a constitutional convention to reassess it and rewrite whatever needed to be rewritten. The constitution isn't well understood 10 generations later because it was only meant to last for one generation. The way Americans worship this document written by slave owners over 200 years ago is a sickness.
Why the hell does anyone care what some people who have been dead 200 years thought about gun control? Isn't it more important what we think about gun control?
This reminds me of something. In Canada we used to have these "heritage minutes" ads that would show a little piece of our history. One of them had an engineer trying to design a pump that would work in Africa. He was having a lot of problems since it would have to operate in a hot dusty environment and be easily maintained and repaired with simple tools. Then he saw some Mennonites (Canadian Amish) going by in a horse and buggy. He ended up talking to them and getting the design they used for their hand powered pump and using that in Africa.
Yep that's exactly the issue here. Most of the distros go under the philosophy of "its easier to ask forgiveness than ask permission". So technically Red Hat et al are violating the Mozilla Foundation's policy, and they will keep on doing it until Mozilla demands that they stop. But Mozilla isn't likely to do this unless Red Hat really screws up their version of Firefox so bad that it damages the Firefox brand. And even then this is unlikely, since Linux users tend to track down the source of problems and they will quickly find out if it's a Red Hat problem or a Mozilla Problem and assign blame appropriately.
The Mozilla rules on using their tradmarks make a lot of sense (and are probably required legally in order to maintain the trademark). Without it, third parties could make thier own version of Firefox loaded with spyware and crap and distribute it under the Firefox name.
Now Mozilla can grant Debian (and Redhat, Suse, Ubuntu, etc) a license to use their logos and stuff. But they can't give a license to everyone who wants to make their own distro based off Debian. Now, Debian doesn't allow debian derivatives to use the official debian logo, so they could maybe add to that rule that you couldn't use the Firefox logo either. But either that didn't occur to them or they just didn't want to do it.
Ok lets say you and I have a contract that specifies that you will provide me with a service in exchange for some money. You provide the service and I skip town without paying you. Most people would consider this stealing (fraud).
But according to yor logic I didn't do anything wrong. I didn't take any physical object from you. I didn't take away your ability to provide services to others. So you have no reason to be upset, right?
Also ubuntu provides phone support (you have to pay for a support contract though) and they will send you CDs for free. These are full install CDs but can be used to update your system as well. Although I'm not sure why anyone would prefer to update this way since online updates are just two clicks away.
Yeah, the internet should be more like the real world where the big and strong bullies get to go around insulting people and generally being dicks and everyone else just has to shut up and take it.
Apparently sysadmins have a god-complex.

Yeah, we'll all have to be sure to check for the debeers mark on our diamonds so we can be sure they were mined by slaves at gunpoint.
Don't count this out. Investors in artificial diamond labs have been know to have accidents like "falling out of a helicopter".

Ah well if you didn't cover non-government threats, then Somalia would be #1 since there's no government there to make threats.
