Who logs out and in? Under XP, you can right click and select Runas, and then run it as if you were the administrator after giving it the admin password. You can do the same thing from the run box or a command prompt. Just write "runas/user:administrator "
Wait, so now instead of banner ads that start playing music or games like "Help Bush out-knit Saddam" (I shit you not), I just get nice adsense ads? This is actually pretty awesome.
Now if only there were a way to have a social life without needing MySpace...
The problem (or opportunity, depending on your point of view), is that a switch to BSD under the hood would basically make everything that an advanced Windows user knows about managing and playing with the finer points of the OS useless. Thats a lot of knowledge down the drain.
I know that if you want to get around the DRM that Apple uses, you can burn to a cd, and then rip it from the cd. So why can't this process be virtualized? I mean, in theory, couldn't you burn it to a virtual cd drive (i.e., make an iso), and then rip it from that, and then take this whole thing and put it into one neat little packaged? At that point, you could automate it, so it would automatically "burn" a disk, rip it, delete the disk, and start over with the next group of songs. Right?
"Are we really free when the people making the rules have no responsibility to inform the public of those new rules. Yes, I'm aware that they are made available for the public to view, but the lawmakers are well aware that the public doesn't have the time, nor the ability to comprehend, everything that is made into law. "
They were available for the public to view inside of a locked filing cabinet in a cellar with a sign on the door that said "Beware of the Leopard".
Its not exactly 1984; at least not yet. Its also pretty much equally Brave New World.
From 1984, we have increased surveillance, general fear (of terrorism), an ongoing war with another power that we can barely even SEE (hidden terrorists), control of communications (NSA/AT&T fiasco, Patriot Act tracking what you pull out of libraries, et cetera), and while Big Brother doesn't have a face now, the idea behind him does; a great big concept that any opposition to is unthinkable (a combination of the moral code of the religious right, and the ideals-turned-buzzwords of "freedom", "patriotism", and "security".)
From Brave New World, we have a world obsessed with hedonism, so much that we feel entitle to it. We have a caste system, mainly that Americans are above immigrants, and that god-fearing men and women are above all. We don't have true freedom, because we are "protected" from bad things on all sides. People don't want to think for themselves, or be responsible for others. Look at all the legislation passed in the name of "protecting the children". To make it worse, we barely appreciate the comfort we live in. Many people are dissatisfied with having a roof over their head, clean hot and cold water, electricity, computers, an internect connection, whereas a fair portion of the world is lucky to have food on the table. We have become indoctrinated with the concept of constant entertainment. Look at how many people never go anywhere without an iPod. They are being entertained literally all day. We are surrounded by television, movies, music, games. All this entertainment draws our focus away from the real issues of our time.
The main difference between us and Brave New World, is that there were enclaves for the free thinkers in BNW. Sure, we exist now in our own little tribes, but we have no place to call our own, that is governed by our wishes.
Perhaps we will eventually take The Savage's way out.
I remember seeing some stastic where someone compared the number of users on MySpace to the population of California, and how many pedofiles were convicted on each. The point was, stastically, you're safer being on MySpace than living in California.
But our weather is nicer.
I can see you've never been around artists. For them, its not a choice. Its their passion. They will go to incredibly lengths to produce what they love. Its not a matter of, "Should I be a musician or an accountant?" The true artists absolutely can not be happy unless they are making their art.
"I know it sounds really Big Brother," Bucholz says. "But it's going to happen. It's going to get cheaper and cheaper until they slap them up on every taxicab and delivery truck and track where people live." And work. And sleep. And move.
I like how he says "I know it sounds really Big Brother", as if to defend it or say that it isn't, but doesn't. Its like, "I know this may be a kitten, but someday I'm going to take a nap."
Firstly, I was going to wonder aloud how much they're losing in terms of advertising revenue, but then I realized mid-post that News Corp. probably has enough money.
Secondly, how do they not have a back up location? This is a gigantic site, and they have no redundancy?
Thirdly, ha ha ha! MySpace is down!
If/when we reach the Technological Singularity, it seems logical that this would create a new Digital Divide. I mean, these super intelligent computers that will be able to augment people to be super intelligent (or whatever happens) will be based in first world countries. So what happens to all the third world countries? The rest of us are becoming transhumans, and what happens to them? Do they get left in the dust? Will our new intelligence solve all their problems?
Speculation as to the effects of a nearby supernova on Earth often focuses on large stars, such as Betelgeuse, a red supergiant 427 light years from Earth which is a type II supernova candidate. Several prominent stars within a few hundred light years from the Sun are candidates for becoming supernovae in as little as 1000 years. Though spectacular, these "predictable" supernovae are thought to have little potential to affect Earth. Type Ia supernovae, though, are thought to be potentially the most dangerous if they occur close enough to the Earth. Because Type Ia supernovae arise from dim, common white dwarf stars, it is likely that a supernova that could affect the Earth will occur unpredictably and take place in a star system that is not well studied. One theory suggests that a Type Ia supernova would have to be closer than 1000 parsecs (3300 light years) to affect the Earth.
Looks like you're going to need V pretty soon.

So, who else read the summary of this and immiediatly went to go download a Freenet client?
Nose grease works. There is a Darwinistic reason why nerds have oily skin, and thats because it allows us to fix cds on the fly.
I'm picturing that scene in The Matrix where the agents are talking to Neo and he just gives them the finger.

In Soviet Russia, dd/mm/yy uses YOU!

Its better to get the kids jaded now. Hell, I wasn't bitter and cynical until I was fourteen. Think of all that wasted time!
The plan is to release Half Lives episodically.
Now, I'm pretty suspicious of the government these days, and I cry foul at censorship, but Free Wifi = Censorship is a pretty damn big leap.

We will form a geek enclave in Antarctica!

Thanks to this new law, children will never ever be able to find porn! On the internet. THE INTERNET.
You see a clinic full of "addicted" gamers. I see the building blocks of the greatest guild that will ever live!!
