This is correct. People have so much info on the computers, and most do not even understand that they need to have backups.
I have an older C2D, with a couple of 500 GB drives provide a raid 1 share for the home, and weekly backups are taken to a safe offsite location. Everything is automated, you just detach a 2.5 USB hdd, and replace it with another one.
This would provide a safe encrypted medium for your data. Why encryption you may ask. If someone steals your sever, do also want to deal with them having access your 10 year digital history?
And what if an HDD goes bad? Would you risk sending your raw data for a warranty replacement?
The kiosk segment is covered by low cost ultra-portables. All you need is a power cord and you can load the videos via USB or Wifi. And they would not be using your whole available spectrum for video.
Or just add sections to make it really difficult for someone to fit. Another solution might be to lower the temperature. Or have some very bright lights.
Previously rumoured under the codename 'Stellarton,' the Intel Atom E600C series will initially comprise the E665CT, E645CT, E665C, and E645C chips, and become available for ordering priced between $61 and $106 (around £38.21 to £66.40) in batches of 1,000 in the next two months. A further two processors, E625CT and E625C, will hit the channel in the first quarter of next year.
You can have a very close experience to what you describe by using Linux on an SSD or an SD card.
Get a laptop that allow you easily slide the HDD/SSD in and out. And a desk SDD/HDD stand for your desktop. Configure two X profiles one for the laptop and one for desktop, auto load with help of python or bash. With newer X you do not even need to have profiles (in most cases).
On desktop setup auto raid 1 and proper nightly backups to keep the on your Mobile SSD safe. Also use full disk encryption.
I am sure this can be done with Windows, but I a not sure about licensing.
It would indeed be a bit cheaper for the manufacturer. But it would also cut into the profits. In this case you can just buy 1 Laptop and 1 Extra GPU instead of 2 laptops.
I find the N810 much easier to use than an Ipad just because of the great keyboard attached to it. For me this small device replaced a laptop when I am on call. As I can RDP into windows and SSH into Linux from anywhere.
Anything over 1M down/up is awesome. I remember when my harddrive was slower than that. I think you should try to use a dialup for a week or two and then you appreciate you connection. And what do you need 50 mb down for??? A website is not going to to render faster? Are you downloading 100's of gigs a day? Are you even watching/using the stuff that you download?
Dual Core vs. Quad Core.
That would hurt Intel in the long run, as they would not be able to sell to Government agencies.
What is wrong with Thinkpads?

Look at Australia.

Those do not exist now.
When the real-estate goes up in price, it makes sense to sell or rent out. You can always move your business to cheaper locations.

Use a Nokia n810 and use the freaking line-in. No need to remove the current system.

The army better be using P1 or older for their feild deployments as those are more rugged and survive EMP.
Intel used to sell these a while back. You can still find tons of them all around the world.
So when will we be able to have Calculon?

Agreed. It looks like GP was comparing a current Cisco XXXX with a PII (Pentium 2) with 64MB or ram in closet.
