Many people have this attitude that a game that a sleeper hit is somehow better than a hit from a larger company.
When people over-hype a game they ruin it for themselves.
The best example of this is halo2.
It was a good game with some bugs, not the best game ever. I enjoyed but i stopped playing after about 12 months, i go back for single player sometimes.
IMHO it bungie can only be blamed for being fairly tight lipped.
The fan base however took tiny bits and tried to extrapolate the entire game from them. They to the TV and said OMG game will be on EARTH!
They took the e3 thing and said OMG EARTH!
Somehow I have always been suprised when people got mad because halo had another halo involved. I know people who were dumbstruck, it never occured to them that there might be another halo.
There was mas speculation about features which bungie said MIGHT be in the game. Ex sprinting and the ATV.
They got these god like ideas of what the game would be like. Then when it came out it didn't meet these.
It comes out the night before my 2nd big test........ fuck.... fuck fuck fuck.
On a lighter not, i really hope they will have a VGA/DVI adapter as i cannont afford a TV to play it on because i am a poor poor college student.
I don't know, im not good a predicting the future, but computers will change, they won't be this way forever.
Once games hit the graphical plateau, they will be limited by the interface. The keyboard and mouse and the gamepad are limited interfaces, with the change of that interface.
It might be that you put on a pair of small glasses that act a like a monitor, and the head rest looks at your brain and you control it directly. I don't know, i think the interface will be limited by how willing people are to have a computer "in their head".
It might be a small implant or it might be completly external.
There will come a time when having a second box just to play games will go away.
So you are saying the computers will never get ton the point where you put in your game (or download or stream) and it puts some stuff on whatever is used for long term storage by then and plays with little or no configuration?
It won't be a Personal Computer eventually. Your house might have a computer, but you won't walk up to it hit the power button and sit down, it won't be the Beige box anymore. it won't be persoanl.
The reason the console will die is because computers will finnaly come to a point where they are just as easy to use a a console.
You didn't read my post, Computers will have to become MUCH MUCH better before this happens. This means windows will no longer rule though.
I play both, i love both.
However eventually both the PC and the console will die. All it will take is a more direct user interface and a much better platform . It will also require the end of the graphics card race, that plateau has to be reached, because that is what seperates the console from the PC, the upgrade race.
The Keyboard the mouse and the gamepad have had their day. They will be replaced before I die. Hopefully within the next 15 years.
Wait i have prediction, 3 more console generations TOPS. Most likely 2. Then a platform that is somewhere bettween the 2 will appear, killing both the PC and the console as we know it.
I find this interesting, but i have to agree with above posters.
My line of thought is when it comes to multiplayer games the server needs to be doing things like physics calculations. The server should also do AI.
I wonder when we will see the first MMO with a realistic physics model.
I want to see a MMO that starts up AI to go about the universe when their are very few players on, or to help the game be fun when it is starting out and their aren't that many people on.
No what they need to do is try to use procedural synthesis more effectivly. However until developers really feel a crunch on space they won't try to make things smaller.
I don't know this person.
However im really suprised at some of the responses. A few were quite... rude almost.
What ever.
Don't assume someone really understands this whole issue.
On subject.
If there was no drm and everyone got free copies of stuff, people would still go and buy a hardcopy like a CD. I know many people who are still to lazy to go an download something. Many people I know still can barely put a song on their IPOD.
The number of tech idiots around still make it very easy to make money in a DRM free market.
People also still buy things that are public domain. As someone said earilier, shakespear is still paid for now a days.
Of a group of 12 friends going to ga Tech and getting a computational media degree, i am the only one with a Mapping protfolio and a few of my own tools for making maps. Their experience with games is still completly limited to playing. I'm activley trying to find a mod team to join. They don't even think they need to do that. They all seem to think that the degree is all they will need. They are staying for 4 years. Im staying 2 more and getting a masters in CS in case the games industry doesn't work out for me.
What scares me about these degrees is that if you don't do well, what can you do with that degree? Nothing, ive got the odd feeling that when you are trying to get a job outside and you say "Well its a game design degree" most interviewers will give you a look, ask a few more questions, then say we will call you.
What also scares me is these degree programs flooding the market with people right when i get out. making the portfolio all the more important.
Maybe, but since it is a closed platform microsoft has complete control over how they use the system. If microsoft doesn't want games to use the HD-DVD drive at all, they can do that.
I was under the immpression that microsoft never intends to have the HDDVD drive built in. They have stated games will never be released on hddvd, if they build one in there is no reason for them to not allow games to be put on HDDVDs.
The videogames rating board is made up of random people selected from different groups. They are no allowed to work within the industry. They tend to be people from a diverse group so that they can get a good cross-section of responses and ratings.
Except 3 rounds from a 45. planted square on his chest will either
A: Knock him on his ass.
B: Bruise his chest and wind him
C: If your lucky pop his sternum
D: All of the above
Body armor just makes it so the round doesn't kill you. It still hurts like hell. Your body is still absorbing the energy of the round.
Lets see, grab the valedictorian of every high school for 40 miles around.
Suddenly all of them are very very very naughty children. Not quite the scholastic angels they appear to be.
Suddenly the school drops the policy, because its very obvious that someone put alot of planing into try to screw ruin these kids. Oh and the school then realizes there is nothing they can do to prevent this. Nothing they can do to prove that the blog was made by the accused. No way for the accused to offer proof they did nothing.
Good job school district good. Job.
With god as my witness, when i get out of college I WILL NEVER WORK FOR OR WITH EA!

This may be tired and old, but I think they are pulling a Romero, they did really well at first and then they got arrogant and it all went to hell.

Im going to hell for this one but hey. neither do child predators.
Stare at the cover real hard for a few hours and hope it somehow plays because he doesn't have a clue how to hook up a ps2. let alone play it.

I stopped watching it after the first episode of the whip set aired. I went back once and saw fastlane on ,then blocked the channel.
