  1. Re:PLEASE someone, hook these to a traffic light. on Surveillance Cameras Get Smarter · · Score: 1

Yes we have that, but it's not good enough. The loops can't tell when a car is approching until it actually arrives in the intersection so the light still cycles reguarless of traffic patterns. A "smart" camera should be able to anticipate if the light needs to change at all and for how long. It might have a 5-second north/south green to let one or two cars through followed by a 5-min east/west green due to there being no north/south traffic.

  2. PLEASE someone, hook these to a traffic light. on Surveillance Cameras Get Smarter · · Score: 4, Insightful

Would someone PLEASE adapt these new intelligent cameras to work with traffic lights? Cameras that can tell how much traffic is coming from each direction could move a lot more traffic. I can't count the amount of time I have wasted at red lights when there was NO traffic at all coming the other way. Intersections that can intelligently route traffic would be uber useful.

  3. It's all about the upgrades on Microsoft Testing "Pay-As-You-Go" Software · · Score: 2, Interesting

It's all about the upgrades or lack thereof. We are happy on Office XP and Windows XP. We will certainly skip at least one or two version upgrades on both products. Microsoft must hate that. So the are looking for ways to make sure we pay even if we don't upgrade and/or for a way to force upgrades when they want. Subscription software works for both goals.

  10. looks like Microsoft has solved the upgrade Issue. on Vista's EULA Product Activation Worries · · Score: 1

I guess Microsoft has now solved the issue of how to deal with users that don't want to upgrade their software. Windows Vista "calls home" every few months to re-validate itself. If the process fails then vista disables an unspecified set of features. So if we look a few years down the road to when they want us to upgrade to a new OS, all Microsoft has to do is turn off their Vista validation servers and presto! Everyone is properly motivated to upgrade. Yippie.
