We have kinda grown disgruntle with bess, poor performace even with 3 dns round robin systems, it still takes sometimes upto 5 seconds for it to tell me playboy.com is banned. Now it uses squid proxy with some custom hacks, which I guess they would have to release being under GPL, but it seems they have done nothing but a basic config of squid. No intercache communications or speed hacks. Among other things they wont update there squid so Outlook Webmail on Exchange server useing dasv doesnt work, due to a new http method of search. Yet it only requires two files to edit in the source, and one line added to each. We are possibilly forced to end our marrige with bess, as they are killing a half million project for student email for over 100,000 students. We maybe forced to move our cache cluster infront of the bess proxy's with the correct and patched squid, something I do not look foward to.

I wish they were more open with there hardware. Im mean in comparion with x86 PPC is really good, and is abit more used then alpha as far as, lower arena area. If only apple opened it up. What do they have to loose, nothing, because with a good Unix orentied OS like OSX, they will get prolly a good amount of developers and easly ported software, so the operating system is really golden.

To me, this is what Unix should of been like in 1995. This is probley one of the best examples of a Unix desktop, fast, easy, and much powerful. Easly scaleable with unix, so you can have multi cpu's. And apple for the most part is good hardware. So if apple was to open up there hardware, and more companies started makeing "apple clones" for cheaper, what os are they gonna run, linux and prolly OSX. Well given the was OSX is, it may be just as easy to run OSX on top, and have a vm or something to run linux under it. This makes a good desktop unixen box, and some good PPC based linux servers is the best way to go.

    Just my thoughts.

    1. Release Star Office in a gpl like license. (It will never be true GPL, to much politics) The license should allow it to be ported freely to any platform, and allow code be used for other projects, but at the same time, allowing SUN to have control of there "offical" source, to make releases and to provide "supported versions". It's already free for anybody to use, so code sharing and code ports aren't that bad, just not supported by SUN. (Big woop).

    2. Staroffice (as posted by another person) should have the fat trimmed. Makeing several indepent apps vs one whole big thing. Make it more like MS office, which allows you to run winword, or excel vs Office, in general. (But you could if you wanted to, run the Staroffice Shell, which I have fount great for X Workstations connected to the main server.)

    4. If StarOffice was more free to do things with the source (less restrictive) then some good hacks would work on it, port it, tweak it, make it faster, and possibly make it a very good product. (Ties in with 1)

    E. Port it to Qt/KDE libs? Or am I dreaming?
