Hell, I myself can't really see any improvement in 360 or PS3 stuff over the best-looking Gamecube games

Try upgrading that 10 year old TV. I'm on the fence when it comes to next gen consoles, but my friend brought his 360 over and hooked it up to my HDTV and it was amazing. It makes the Gamecube look like a NES.

Yeah, right up until they start releasing certain games only on HDDVD because the size is too large for a regular DVD. To fit games onto DVD's they already reduce the quality of cut scenes. I'd love to play Lord of the Rings or Madden with HD cut scenes.

I'm not sure there is going to be a "Winner". There is already a hybred drive in the works. I see two scenerios.

    1. Hybred drives become the norm and most people have no idea which format they are renting/buying because it all works in their player. Since these media morons can't seem to compromise, I see this as the best case scenerio.

    2. Blu-Ray wins simply because in a few years there will be 10 million PS3's in homes. I'm not saying this is good/bad/whatever, its just simply the facts.

I'm an early adopter with a HDTV and there is no way I would buy any of these players, which isn't a good sign.

I agree, I'll buy one first chance I get, but I'm not going to camp out in a parking lot or buy one on ebay.

I read all the same complaints, "its too expensive", "I dont even have an HDTV, so what do I need a BRay player", blah blah blah. It was just in the news today that HDTV's are quickly dropping in price. So in a year or two you will have one, calm down.

I'd rather pay a little more now, rather than have to go purchase a hard drive and HDDVD add-ons seperate (go ahead and mod me down XBox fanboys).

Well said. My company uses an IT outsourcing firm from Mumbai to AUGMENT, not replace, our programmer/SA/QA staff. The simple fact is that we cannot find enough qualified people in Cleveland (the worlds dumbest leper colony) to do all the work we need done. Selfishly, I can't really complain because it has meant less 50 hour weeks for me.

Several people on my team were scheduled to go to Mumbai next month for a meet and greet, and their plans are on hold because of the recent bombings, so to say it has no effect is ignorant. Now it doesn't mean we won't continue to work with them, but it does give the "high level suit and mustache" guys a little pause.

I realize they are important, im just sick of articles like this ending up with posts of nothing but rants about how HD is overrated.

I'm not a snob, I'm just being honest. Many people think they have actually seen HD broadcasts because they watched a program on a big 42" flat screen TV. Unfortunately the TV was either ED (common in cheap flat pannels) or the signal wasn't HD, just a normal analog signal stretched to fit the screen.

Even my technically challenged wife can see the clear difference in a football game when you flip between analog and HD. So before everyone gripes and rips HD, make sure you've actually seen the real thing.

  11. Re:4. Studios are Conservative on DVD Format War Already Over? · · Score: 1

I am definitely an early adopter, yet I wont get one because for now I dont need one. All you need is an HD PVR and a large external hard drive. You can record HD movies from premium channels and pay per view. A $200 hard drive is better than a $1000 player and $30 bucks a movie.

This is why movie studios are conspiring and lobbying so hard to get the broadcast flag up and running. Once they have the flag, my PVR will erase the movies after a certain time period.

  12. Re:#3 is the killer on DVD Format War Already Over? · · Score: 1

The one thing I didn't see in the article was the mere fact that only about 18 million households (about 20%) own a HDTV, and only a small percentage of them will actually want a HD player. Thats a pretty small target market considering you can get HD movie channels (HBO, Cinemax...) with cable/satellite, as well as HD pay per view.

Why spend 500 on an HD player when my cable box give me the same thing, well because its also a Playstation.

    //RANT
From now on, people who don't actually own HDTV's are no longer permitted on the format war topic. HD is better, much better. Once you have one you'll know.

Actually, I was able to get every application you listed to run as a normal "user" account. I have repacked and given special permissions for hundreds of third party apps to get them to run non-admin.

The last co. I worked for decided to do this, boy you should have seen the backlash and uproar from users. Everyone from other IT depts, engineers, heck even secretaries were mad. However, once we successfully implemented a locked down environment help desk calls were dramatically reduced.

It's actually not as hard as you think to get "legacy" apps to run correctly as a non-admin. The best tools for this can be found at Sysinternals http://www.sysinternals.com/, regmon and filemon. Just install the app as an admin, then try to run it as a user. Regmon and Filemon will tell you where you get an "access denied" error. When repacking the app, just make sure to give the appropriate permissions to keys/files that the app writes to. InstallRite from epsilon is also pretty handy http://www.epsilonsquared.com/ , its basically a nice front end to sysdiff.

Don't get me wrong, it isn't always easy. Some apps need to run exe's on the first reboot, some dynamically create files at winnt, but with a little programming know how you can create some tools to get around this.

Everyone seems all enraged about the price, and I'm not going to rant about BRay and Cell and what they may cost blah blah blah.

    Simple Economics
Its called price discrimination. They will only have 2-4 millions units available in the first couple of months. They are well aware that there are 2-4 mil people (me included) who are willing to pay a premium to be the first to have one. Once production lines ramp up and costs go down, the price will come down and all you morons ranting about the price will be in line to buy one when they drop $100 a year from now.

Why should Sony sell you (cheapo without HDTV) a console today for 400 when I will gladly buy that same console for 600. This is why Sony is one of the oldest and most successful consumer electronics companies.
