public defenders are NOT working for the same entity as the cops. In many locales the PD assigned to you is either a private attorney who is ON RETAINER to assist the public defenders office when needed OR the in some cases the PD office is a private firm that contracts with the city to provide legal services to the indigent.

PDs are very real attorney's who in many cases have a lot of more training than that DA assigned to prosecute you.

    http://titanicarchive-online.com/index.php4?page=319

Researchers from the National Institute for Standards and Technology and John Hopkins University favor the weak rivet theory. They found that most of the rivets recovered from RMS Titanic also contained excessive amounts of slag that made them more brittle, and therefore, more likely to snap off at the head upon impact with the iceberg. Their analyses of steel hull plate indicated, however, that "it is possible that brittle steel contributed to the damage at the bow due to the impact with the iceberg, but much more likely that the brittle steel was a factor in the breakup of the ship at the surface" (Foecke 1998:14).

After reviewing and debating the results from these investigations, the Marine Forensics Panel (SD-7) in a 1997 report to the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers concluded that the cause of sinking was in large part due to the failure of the rivets that fastened together its hull. Metallurgical analyses are continuing at the National Institute of Standards and Technology and John Hopkins University. The results of these additional analyses may shed better light on the influence of steel and rivets on the sinking of RMS Titanic during that dark night of April 14, 1912.

The summer before my junior year of college I had the chance to be the assistant director (i.e. head geek) at CyberCamps in the Boston area. The camp taught a good variety of Web(HTML), C++, 3D design and introductory robotics.

The courses were fun and decently challenging but the best part was seeing kids (ages 7-15) actually learn and use technology that they had never known or seen before. We had artists who learned graphic design for the first time, Lego kids who learned about microprocessors and servos and other kids who ate up intro to C++ like candy.

It really is a great feeling to see kids enjoy learning and show off their accomplishments.

To this day its the best job I ever had :)

I'll agree with the ongoing sentiment that programming is important, but what about all those servers, switches, and other infrastructure that you programmers need to run your apps on? The problem with CS in schools is that its all .NET this, Java that...

As a woman in college who took those courses (they were interesting most of the time), but wasn't very good at them. I found that what I really excelled in was the sysadmin side - an aspect that they never even touched on.

You have to show students in school that there is more to being in IT than just coding, you can be a sysadmin, a documentation expert, or a dozen other things. The important thing to understand the concepts that go into IT, not just the syntax of some coding language.

I'm the IT Manager for a small non-profit company who handles everything from coding apps to fixing the printer, and I have a Political Science degree. The CS program at my school, was so focused on teaching you how to program that I lost interest and went into liberal arts.

Later in my career I learned how to program in the context where it made sense to me, but learned to code as a supplement to all my other skills. What CS programs need to learn is that a well-rounded approach is a much better angle to attracting students of all genders.

  10. This is hopefully good news.... on Michael Dell Returns to CEO Role at Dell · · Score: 1
Dell has really gone down the drain over the past couple of years. As as corporate customer I've had to deal with just in the last 6 months
    • 20+ Faulty motherboards, all needing replacement.
    • 2 more faulty motherboards, in BRAND NEW computers out of the box
    • 2 bad DIMMs in a brand new laptop

Customer service has been terrible, its seems everytime I put in a trouble ticket it get routed to wrong support area. Example: I put in a service call about 2 bad DIMMs; I was then given an email about how to troubleshoot my hard drive problem. I had to call them up and explain the whole thing over again to them in order to get a dispatch for the memory.

Then there is the bloatware! It's not quite as bad on the corporate desktops, but the Inspirons I ordered were just loaded with trial versions of AOL and Symantec, and god only knows what else. It must have taken 5 minutes to actually boot up to windows.

That's just unacceptable, you pay good money and in many cases to much money for a computer it shouldn't be crippled when you get it.

Let's hope that Dell goes back to the basics, and hopefully finds some redemption.

I went to three different stores in order to get my Wii, and I have to concur that there was nothing but good spirits and a sense of camraderie. The first store (Walmart) had over 400 people waiting for a lottery of only 36 systems, cops were there but everything went very smoothly. The second (also a Walmart) only had 29, and I was of course 32nd in line. The last store had 68, and I was there at 6am for #25. I have to admit I am not a hard-core gamer, and it is increasingly rare for me to wait 4+ hours for anything, but waiting for the Wii was actually fun. Everyone in the line was talking, and playing games, we were just genuinely excited. As for the Wii itself, so far it is the most fun I've had on game system since my Atari 7800. My friends and I were up last night playing the Wii sports for a couple of hours, and it was a riot! I did buy Madden '07, GT-Pro, and Zelda but haven't played them yet...

  14. Locking Down Windows on Securing a High School Windows XP Computer Lab? · · Score: 2, Informative
There are a few ways to "lock" down windows.

If you have an windows domain the best is to the group policies and create individual accounts to track each of the students.

Group policy http://www.microsoft.com/technet/technetmag/issues /2005/05/LockDown/ will also give you a great deal of control over how much of the windows interface they have access to. For instance you can lock out the CLI, and where they can save files. Here is a link from Micro$oft on how to get started.

If you don't have an active directory domain setup, you can still lock down the desktop by creating local policies http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_tutorial s/wxppspol.html, unfortunately you will need to apply these to each PC if all the hardware in the lab is the same, but it wouldn't be to difficult to create a locked down image using Ghost, and then image all the machines to be identical.

Also, if the school can afford it buy a copy of websense http://www.websense.com/global/en/. It will keep the little buggers out of the internet, prevent them from downloading games, and even using chat programs.

Not to mention that as women we tend to work on things in a collabrative fashion to reach the end goal. As a woman who has been in IT for the last 7 years, I can tell you though it has changed in that short time. My first job out of college I was the only woman in my department, and was only hired because they assumed I had more "people skills" than my male counterpart. After I became the senior administrator in less than a year, they already had 2 more women in my department, and now at my current job the IT department is 50/50 men/women.
