  1. Why should Nintendo bother to recycle? on Greenpeace Down on Games Industry, Logic Flawed? · · Score: 2, Interesting

Gamestop recycles for them. Old gameboy cartridges can be played in the advance. Old advance cartridges can be played in the DS. Old gamecube games and controllers can be used in the Wii. Old Nes's and SNES's are still coveted for nostalgia value. I've thrown away a ton of electronics in my day, but I don't think I've ever thrown away anything Nintendo branded unless it was broken. Next thing they're going to be complaining the VC titles use valuable electrons when they are sent over the internets. It's not like there is a landfill full of old videogames out there polluting the groundwater. This is a publicity stunt plain and simple and should be recognized as such.

There are always Greenpeace people asking for money near where I live. If you feel compelled to give money to people on the street give the money to the Red Cross, they'll use it to help someone. Unless you think that your money would do more good funding studies and press releases on which electronics corporation is the biggest polluter.

I am a non-programmer so maybe someone could enlighten me, but it seems that an office suite that is updated every year or so should require fewer man-hours to make than any game. My papers sure don't look any better this year than they did the last. I tried to use wordperfect, and it seemed to work worse than it did ten years ago. Isn't this the first thing the government should be looking out for? I bet Microsoft could charge $20 for Office and still make money. I mean who really cares about Internet Explorer, it's free.

Software emulation? YUCK. It's a little much to pay for imperfect versions of the games. Buy Psychonauts anyway if you haven't played it. Tim Schafer has yet to make a bad game. Here are the glitches as reported by Kotaku:

Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge: There is some minor flickering at the top of the screen that happens very rarely. The "Press A to Continue" message is missing when the host player leaves a multiplayer game. Additional content within the game (such as demos & trailers) are not supported and selecting those options may result in crashing the game (requiring a restart of the console)

Fable: There are some random bursts of audio static and some minor texture issues and a short hang up when removing tattoos. Additional content within the game (such as demos & trailers) are not supported and selecting those options may result in crashing the game (requiring a restart of the console)

Fuzion Frenzy: There are some minor frame rate issues. Additional content within the game (such as demos & trailers) are not supported and selecting those options may result in crashing the game (requiring a restart of the console)

Halo: There are some very mild frame rate drops.

Psychonauts: HDMI 720p is not supported for PAL users. Running the game in 720p over HDMI will result in the game locking up for PAL users. If you are using HDMI output, set the resolution to 1080i or 1080p (anything but 720p)

  13. Ads or Articles? on The Duel Between Gaming Magazines and Websites · · Score: 1
My main problem with magazines is that they are almost entirely advertisements. There are the advertisements that look like articles (with the small advertisement listing on the top), but there are also articles that are usually thinly-veiled product placements. Then there are the regular advertisements, which seem to be there just to trick you into thinking that everything else in the magazine must be non-ads (articles). Mostly I read magazines on the crapper, and even when I look at the table of contents, by the time I find something to read it is too late (lack of page numbers on most pages doesn't help). And if you pay close enough attention to things you can find even sketchier things in the reviews.

Example 1: Guitar World lists the best guitar solo ever as "Machine Gun." Incidentally, guitar world writer Andy Aledort was touring with the Band of Gypsies at the time. It is a darn good solo, but also a pretty suspicious coincidence.

Example 2: Rolling Stone gives the new Springsteen album an unprecedented 5 stars. They never give anything 5 stars. (Ok Computer= 4 stars, Nevermind= 3 stars) Incidentally, Springsteen's manager is a former writer. This is not a coincidence.

Example 3: There is the cozy relationship between muscle mags and supplement makers detailed in Game of Shadows. For example BALCO managed to market an entirely fake supplement called TMG. I could keep going on forever. I guess my point is that when I'm reading the internet, there is a short article and a bunch of ads I can completely ignore most of the time. There is also a chance that the small piece of information is a bit of real news, or someone's actual opinion, rather than another advertisement hidden in some flowery prose. Why should I pay for a magazine that purports to review products, when it is actually in the pocket of the reviewee? This bullshit should be illegal.

Game magazines have a similar problem going on. First you have the "official" magazines of the various platforms. Even sketchier, the earliest magazine reviews of games tend to be the most positive. The earliest review of Lair (Play Magazine) gave it a 9/10. I don't know if this happens all the time, but it's just something I noticed

Maybe I'm the only one who feels this way, but I think that the 10gb ipod is more of an example of something that you would be insane to try to (or pay to)repair.

A living wage is a very nice idea. However, there is a theory that raising the minimum wage generally increases unemployment. In other words, if a company can't afford to pay a living wage, they fire the people they can no longer afford. Minimum wage is better than no wage at all. Also, when you pay people more, the goods they are producing tend to start to cost more, and the living wage you were aiming for won't buy the same basket of goods. There is also a collective action problem. If one company institutes a living wage, it makes the goods in that country more expensive. Companies then outsource heavily, and the next thing you know, you are sending your boxes to china to be stacked and then shipped back. You can try to remedy this problem with protective tariffs, but believe it or not, they aren't too popular.

You are very misinformed. The only thing that has been removed in the 40GB version is related to PS2 backwards compatibility, some USB ports, a card reader, and the ability to read SACD's. Everything that is needed to play PS3 games is the same. Sony has been very clear about this. Unless someone creates a new game that requires the emotion engine(PS2 Chip), 4 USB ports, or 80GB of hard drive space it isn't going to happen. The only console where different hardware is an issue for developers is the 360, which has models that lack a hard drive.

You do not understand inflation. The people who modded you up also do not understand inflation. The poster you tried to correct was correct. When you buy electronics you are spending currency. The value of that currency is judged by how much it would cost to buy a set basket of goods(differs somewhat depending who you ask, but never includes 64k of ram). The fact that electronics go down in cost has to do with better manufacturing techniques, not the changing value of the dollar. The idea is that in 1985 to buy a game console, a person had to give up other things which in fact cost more today than they used to due to inflation.

These consoles are still relatively young. If this sort of problem starts to affect non-linear games it could become very annoying. Most people might not remember this, but the Gamecube Tiger Woods had half the courses on one disc, and half on another or something like that. There are certain types of games that don't lend themselves to multiple discs. It might not be an issue if the 360 has as short of a lifespan as the previous Xbox, but if I'm dropping a small fortune on a console, I'd like it to be future-proof.

(because it is not currently advertising it in this way) 3. Who has made that argument? While both 360 and PS3 have media center capabilities, I haven't seen any advertisements that tell consumers that. They're all game advertisements. I think people like to be able play movies on their consoles. There are many reasons why the Wii is selling well, but I don't think one of them involves people saying, "Gee, I really want that one because it doesn't play movies."
