I worked with an Iraqi and an Iranian recently. They had both fought in the Iran/Iraq war, and thought they might have even been on opposite sides of the same battle at one stage. They got on very well as colleges, and when I asked one of them about the war he had fought in, he laughed and said that no-one he knew was under any illusions about it. They did their level best not to get killed, and went out of their way not to kill anyone on the other side as well, if they could help it. He was on the Iranian side, and the only person in his unit who wanted to be at war was the unit's mullah, who they all hated and despised. Sounded like the strangest war ever the way he described it.
So really it just comes down to Politicians lying to get into power, then doing whatever their corporate masters tell them to do once they get there. Bush is an idiot, and transparently a corporate shill. Obama is just a slicker, more authoritative one.
In my experience an awful lot of Execs are idiots. Some of the statements made in meetings at the company I work at would cause our shareprice to plummet like a sheep if they were made public.
Yes, except that at 26c Northland is very warm, but pleasant. At +34C in Australia, its usually too hot to enjoy. Northland also has no poisonous things unless you count the Katipo spider, but I've never seen one, and I've been looking for 40 years or so. (Not continuously).
That would likely be true if The US were not just a one party state. Also have a look at this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fascism
Take special note of this bit:
"Fascists seek to organize a nation according to corporatist perspectives, values, and systems, including the political system and the economy."
That's pretty much exactly what is happening here.
From reading the article, it seems to be both. I am assuming that "media lines" is marketing speak for some sort of advise on what to say. I don't know, however, as I don't speak marketing. That's what this seems to be. Just a political party that wants to control the message.
Well, I think you should choose mine. I haven't ironed out all the wrinkles yet, but I think it'll work. It will involve beer somewhere along the line, I'm pretty sure about that. I haven't quite figured out how to make you send me money yet, and that seems to be the most important part of any church, so I'll fill in the rest of the details when I've got that bit sorted. Meanwhile, cheers.
The Pharaoh in question was Akhenaten, also known as Amenhotep IV. He introduced monotheism to the Egyptians, and made the god Aten the supreme god. It was a sort of Sun worship from what I can see. He was exised from history by the rulers who followed him, and only rediscovered later. (19th Century I think).
So the answer to the question "Who created God"? is always "We did."
That happened in NZ last year. The guy involved wound up in court arguing that the device belonged to him, as the Police had left it on his car. He won too.
Nice point, and in 1945 my Father was shot by a Nazi, (although of course he didn't die). Didn't stop the rest of his platoon killing the Nazi, and his (surrendered) comrades. Does that stop me from playing FPS games featuring Nazis? No. Does that stop me letting my kids doing the same? No. Do I talk to my kids about who the Nazis were and what happens in war? Of course. I don't see any reason to be offended by games featuring Nazis either.
My Father carried the scars of war to his grave, both mental and physical, but there was no couselling or other help available, and I don't think it would have occured to him to ask for any anyway.
War is not a pleasant thing for anyone. Some of these people getting upset about reality intruding on their comfortable lives need to understand that. The US cannot go to war and expect no casualties. The world doesn't work like that.
Some people are still scared of that. A piece was reported on what passes for news on TV here recently that a study on cell phone radiation showed no correlation with cancer at all, but was "reported" as "Researchers can't find a correlation, but are not sure that there isn't one". The trouble with the whole report was at the end when they interviewed one of the researchers who basically said "There's no correlation, that we can find. The numbers just don't stack up"
Then the dumb ass reported repeated that they were still looking. Sounded to me like the researchers had moved on actually.
What?! That seems very hard to believe. I live in New Zealand, one of the smallest, least densely populated countries in the world, and I have more choices that that!
That's the point Hawking is trying to make I think, anyway Heinlein said it better:
"The Earth is just too small and fragile a basket for the human race to keep all its eggs in. "
There's no real reason for us to stay planet bound, on this or any other planet. By the way, I checked out Dr. Katherine Freese's homepage, and it turns out she's a real hotty, as well as smart: http://www-personal.umich.edu/~ktfreese/.
Well the US is run by corporations now. The politicians will just pass laws to suit whoever pays them. In this case it'll be a Software company, but it could just as easily be an oil company, or an entertainment company, or whatever.
Really? I wonder what there're doing about a company called Parallel Importers who are selling ipads here in New Zealand before they're available from Apple.
I read your post, and I feel compelled to reply, but I'm not sure what to say really. You sound like a reasonable person just trying to make your way in the world, but there is a certain despair in that post. It might be time to think about emigrating from the US. People like you probably have no hope left there, as your prayer is destined to remain unanswered I think. Your political structures are all corrupt and even the pretense of Democracy seems gone. I live in New Zealand, and we welcome skilled migrants. Especially ones with good english language, and a bit of capital. Seriously, you should think about it.
I think the best point you make is near the end of your post, "While taking a good chunk of telecom money". It seems to me that the divide between Representatives, Senators etc and lobbyists has blurred to the point where US politicians' votes are for sale to the highest bidder. Its time for another Revolution guys. Your Govt needs reform, and the guys cashing in won't do it on your behalf.
Why would you totally respect their position? They don't know if there are burial grounds there.
From the Article:
"would disturb spiritual sun greetings and possibly ancestral artifacts and burial grounds on the seabed. The ocean floor was once exposed land before the sea level rose thousands of years ago."
So, thousands of years ago, some people may or may not have lived on some land that is now under sea. We'll probably never know, and the Wampanoag people don't either.
Now everyone come back at me with claims about how accurate non-literate cultures' tribal histories are.
Anyway, what the fuck is a "spiritual sun greeting", and why is this any less dumb than ancient carpenter worship?
Give me a decent script and acting I can believe.

Quite right, here's another word for Corporatist: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fascism Have a look at the first couple of lines.

I didn't read the summary very closely and assumed this was about the death of big record companies!

That's right. My SSD drive doesn't even make my dick get any bigger. Its still a really funny colour though.

Yeah, but I've got a WiFi router, and my 10 year old is home with a cold today. You do the math.

Hang on a minute! What do you mean the Pope's not infallible?
How can you have disregard for the views of Darl McBride? A fine upstanding businessman. I'm shocked, shocked I tell you!
