The problem with me is that I'm a story guy. So really, most of my time would be with - no joke - notepad. I write a lot. It's what I do, it's what I find fun. I could probably get rescued with three scripts and two novel-length manuscripts done by that time.

However, I'd need a game that took my mind off things and allowed infinite replayability without any game feeling the same way twice.

So... it'd have to be something like a Total Annihilation, your Supreme Commander...

Or come to think of it, I think the guys're right with their Civilization choice. It's a game that eats up your time and you don't even realize it. I've had entire days just go missing because I needed to reinvade the city of Labia Majora taken from me, using the town of Urethra as the final staging point.

    ...what?

Many actual conservatives - as opposed to Republicans - believe that incredibly silly.

At least in my area, and I will admit it's hard to say because conservatives in California != conservatives at large, the whole freedom fries thing was about two weeks long before it quickly got old.

Really, France is going to be moving on up regardless of who had been elected, when one considers the previous man in office. Much as France's people recognized the distinction between president and people (or so my French friends in college tell me; I'll take their word for it), I recognize that Chirac != France at large.

Especially when you look at the last election. In a series of political errors, the run-off became between Chirac, the devil they knew, and Le Pen, someone who makes Rumsfeld look like a hippie. Couldn't really blame them for sticking with a guy who was just personally corrupt, rather than potentially evil on a global scale.

My parents made it a point to not censor my media intake. I decided what I watched, etc. They didn't feel that me viewing violence on TV was ever immoral.

Talking about it years later (and clearly their decision made me who I am - working in media production), the point of them standing firm on not watching pornography wasn't a moral issue at all - it was just simply about having class. They figured if they taught me and my siblings class, it would permeate into everything we did. Since we're all either in college or college graduates with no criminal record, I think it's safe to say it worked.

But I've really noticed this to be missing - parents are so tied up in making sure their kids don't get bullied, avoid pornography, or not play violent video games, that they forget just to teach them to stand up straight, look someone in the eye when they speak, shake another man's hand firmly when introducing yourself, all the trappings of being a gentleman (or lady, in my sister's case).

And out of all my friends, the ones whose parents worried about that, about what their kids did instead of what their kids had happen to them, were the ones who were able to get out of our horrible town.

About half of my friends were sheltered from "anything bad," and most of them are still living at home in their mid-twenties.

Obama talks a good talk. I think he would make a great first black president - one that does very little, thereby doing very little to make people nervous about having elected a black president. Chappelle made a joke about being the first black president, but in essence he's right - it's a very "hot" proposition. Elect one, let him do very little for four to eight years, then next time around, a black president with real chops won't have to jump those hurdles. I mean, really, a president that does nothing? It would be nice for a change, anyway.

Why didn't they go out and find one of the college professors who is against GMO?

Because they aren't the ones out there forcing policy change - which is exactly what Penn & Teller were going after. Perhaps if you actually watched the fucking show, you'd get what they were talking about.

Here's essentially what the entire episode boils down to:

H2O Petitioner: Can I get you guys to sign a petition?
[When asked, "For what?" she replies:]
H2O Petitioner: For banning dihydrogen monoxide.
[the signer says, "Oh yeah, I'll sign that."]
H2O Petitioner: Thank you very much!
Penn Jillette: And our petition woman was getting signatures right and left. Oh, okay, mostly left; but man, there's a lot of people against that evil water.
H2O Petitioner: It's everywhere, and we really just need to ban it.
Penn Jillette: These passionate, informed people didn't even need to ask what dihydrogen monoxide is. They didn't... even... ask.

    ---

And Jillette is by no means a conservative. Their point is that there is a large faction of environmentalists who are stumping for things that they don't even have a clue about. They are no better than ID people, fighting boogeymen (to borrow a phrase someone smarter than me has already used in this thread) that don't exist.

And these are the same fucking people getting money raised and policies changed. Getting DDT banned? Same sort of people, same sort of thinking.

So maybe I am an idiot; God forbid I think a group of college students wanting to prevent the advancement of agriculture are simply fucking stupid.
