Not that I would advocate spending money this way, but what is the difference between this and the people who buy equipment/characters/accounts for Diablo/Guild Wars/WoW type games on EBay or such like? I would think that this community would be more supportive of people paying to learn the skills to play the game through rather than buying a pre-built account online for 100's of bucks. (I just did a quick check on EBay and a Lvl 60 Rogue is going for $560).

Or is it just the thought of giving an 8 year old $25/hour to teach you anything that pisses people off so much?

Personally I'd rather buy a bunch of good beer, get drunk and have my ass kicked in a game for an hour than bust the cash on in-game items

Don't knock the graphical clients too much. In college I used pine it was fine. Now I use Outlook and Evolution. I don't really care if it's Outlook or Evolution, what I need is a client that can filter the email into folders by rules, archive the emails so that I can go back to the beginning of the project 2 years ago and see what was commited. I also need to easily (read drag and drop) emails into my calendar and task list. I need to assign emails as tasks to other, catagorize emails for others, send emails out at later times or dates, have automatic follow-ups when needed and allow my co-workers a glimpse into my mind by assigning priorities. I need set up mettings via email, including assigning resources like the projector or the meeting room. I would have thousands of emails of which only a small fraction would be of interest, if it wasn't for my IT guys applying good spam filters. The "prettier" programs tend to be more useful for group interactions, rather than the single user. Now I know that this is the software, not the interface, but the interface allows me to do everything a lot quicker, with a small learning curve (I have no intention of memorizing hotkeys).

Bottom-line, Outlook/Evolution (depends whether I'm at work or home) probably saves me a bunch of hours/week by being useful. Pine et al. in their wonderful simplicity, simply couldn't.

In 1985 I had 2 close friends, and even then didn't like them much. Now I have 2 close friends and like them. The deal is that in 1985 I would hang out with my friends all the time and they would piss me off, as I would them. Now I meet up with my guys on Thursday, we do our thing and I can ignore them for the rest of the week. I just need to talk to them a couple of times in the week and typically by email. If the internet gave me that, I thank it.

A better analogy would be a Brit such as myself bitching about the state of your glorious president, when I could have emigrated to the US, applied for citizenship, registered to vote in a swing state and then voted Democrat.

I did, and he still got re-elected!!

What I find amusing here is that a friend of mine who works at microsoft signed me up for the Windows Vista preview program:

The surveys will be aimed at assessing your overall experience with Windows Vista. Surveys will be concise and easy to fill out.

Neat I thought, I responded and was notified of being in the program. I get to see this thing before the general public. I pulled out the wifes old, not currently being used, Inspiron 1100 laptop thinking that it would be a good test machine - not fast, but fits the specs.

I still have yet to see a copy turn up for review and nows it's available for download. I assume that they decided to make the exclusive Beta program open to all kinds of riff-raff.

It doesn't matter though, two nights ago I installed Unbuntu Dapper on the Inspiron, spent 10 mins investigating and patching the screen resolution, 30 mins investigating and patching the wireless drivers and 2 mins setting up Evolution. Since then I have being playing with that as my work-from-home computer with no problems (cross fingers). Now that's been a cool experience.
