I myself use yahoomail (was going gmail but my yahoo account is 11 years old so everyone knows it -- plus I have no need for the gmail amounts of storage) and I have no problems with webmail (not even hotmail, except when MS was a bag of douche and routed gmail invites to the spam folder) -- I was jokingly referring to getting them all SMTP/POP3/etc server/accounts of their own.

Punch them in the face for using hotmail and get them a REAL email account. No, but seriously... I don't know if there's any (reasonable) way you're going to easily get around hotmail's "security". You could try contacting hotmail support about the problem... lord knows how much good that will do you :D. You could find a trusted host that it accepts links from, set up a mail account there, and have the mail automatically forwarded (though if you don't want it to be a mass [i.e. all the same] email you would have to create a different account for each person). That's all I can think of (other people mentioned spoofing the "from"... that probably won't get you far, most spam filters reject anything that doesn't have a matching reverse DNS lookup... but I've never tried it with hotmail, so I guess you could give it a go).

How many desktop harddrives have you owned? If you buy the low-cost crap drives, of COURSE they're loud. Horrible analogy time: that's like buying a beat-up Geo Metro and then saying "Well, motorcycles make less noise than my Metro so therefore all cars are louder than motorcycles". If you go with medium to high-end drives, they are VERY quiet -- they have more room for vibration buffers and other anti-noise technowhozzits. If you think laptop drives are quiet, let me give you a listen to my '03 Toshiba -- it's louder than both of my desktop harddrives combined even when they're ticking away at full throttle.

  8. Re:Removable storage made easy on 2.5" Drives On the Desktop · · Score: 1

How is it a lot easier to remove 2.5" or 3.5" drives? I have an Antec SuperLanBoy case with a 4-drive mount system -- the drive is screwed into a U-shaped assembly using silicone buffers to reduce vibration (and thereby noise) and the U-shaped assembly simply slides into place in a designated rack. All I have to do is unplug the power and IDE cables, push 2 tabs inwards, and pull out my drive (the drive assembly is turned sideways so you pull your drive straight out instead of having to fight against your video card / cpu heatsink).
Alternatively, if you're talking about the 'ol 4-screw system into a straight metal slab on both sides, you're still going to have to have 4 screws whether it's a 2.5" or 3.5", the only advantage I would see there is that the 2.5" would be more easily manuevered between the video card and the cpu heatsink.

  18. Re:Screw that. on Hollywood Against Jobs' Movie Pricing Plan · · Score: 4, Insightful

I agree -- Apple and the MPAA/RIAA just want to grab the most money they can. There are bargain bins where you can get 2 movies for 10 bucks... so why should I pay 10 dollars a PIECE for those two movies just because I downloaded them? If I bought them, it would be cheaper, I would get a physical DVD, and I would get a cool DVD case to add to my collection (of 10...). Tiered cost system would help fix that!... but wait... wouldn't they make up for the money they "lost" there by jacking up rates elsewhere?!... probably, yes. Lets say for some movies they raised the price from $10 to $20... this caused half the potential customers to be turned away, so only half as many downloads are made of the movie... well they were sold at twice the price -- do the math, Apple makes just as much money, BUT doesn't have to pay for as much bandwidth (which can rack up if you've got big-big movie files). If Apple didn't stiff people and initiated a tiered system, it would cause people to download more movies than they usually would (i.e. "Who wants to pay 10 bucks for a Pauly Shore movie... oh, what's that? it's only $5? Count me in!").
Tiering would also be a worthwhile venture for iTunes. iTunes has a good idea in that it lets people bypass the $10 cost of a cd (okay okay, $10 is ridiculously cheap... maybe it's on sale or something) just to hear that one song they want. What's my problem with it? Well, I have good taste in music (IMOO) so I don't listen to garbage music where only one song on a cd is worth listening to. If I'm going to buy a whole album off iTunes at a dollar a song, an average of 12 songs would cost me $12 bucks... I pretty much only buy music that's not on the radio, so the cd's I usually look at are between $10-$12... so, for the same price of downloading an album I could have it in physical form (adding the ability to use it in a CD player and to look at pretty album art)... definitely not worth it for me to use iTunes to download all the music I want.
Furthermore, it doesn't help that I don't own and iPod (go Creative Zen, woo!) so iTunes songs are useless to me.
