He mentioned that for humans to live there, we're probably easily looking at 100-500 years before the radiation is at acceptable levels. Once the wildlife have fewer problems (e.g. thryroid disorders), it may be safer for humans to move in. A good experiment would be to take a sampling of various types of wildlife--perhaps the ones most sensitive to certain radiation effects--and record the data on a yearly basis. Once the animals stop succumbing to radiation effects, it might be safe to move in, but you're going to have to consider other problems such as plant sequestration of radioactive isotopes. That birch may burn really well in the wintertime, but how much I-131 has it taken in (just a hypothetical statement)?

HDMI cables transfer high frequency data, so impedance must be taken into account. Digital signals traveling a meter or two at ~200MHz are quite "versatile" and can handle being transferred over cheap wires, but if the impedance is grossly wrong, your signal will not make it to the other side in any decipherable form. Parallel non-insulated steel (lossy) wires probably aren't going to handle the signal that well.
Don't forget that a coathanger should act pretty well as an EM radiator at these wavelengths.:)

Yes, for the most part. Because of a bad config, they were going from drawings around 1-10MB to drawings over 100MB. That's what happens when you get management to take the IT department out of the software management and configuration equation. We were, of course, still left to sweep up the pieces.

After having a slow, quasi-linear growth of files for the previous couple of years, the usage jumped to 50% in a matter of months. It ended up that our CAD users switched to a newer version of the software without our knowledge (CAD group managed their own software) and didn't tell us. The unexpected *DOES* happen, and it would have been incredibly stupid to have been running closer to capacity.
Accounting would have probably had half of us fired if they hadn't been able to do their document imaging which tends to take up a lot of space on the SAN.

Some of the machines worked for four or five years before having to get a new board. We were running legacy accounting software on locked down WinXP machines, so a 270 was absolutely fine until our software vendor refused to support the legacy accounting system anymore.
I still have two 270s at home. One is powered down, and I suspect that it still works, and the other is used full-time as an OpenBSD firewall running PF running off a CF card. Not a hiccup.
Sure. My girlfriend did when her laptop display started flickering. She purchased the extended service plan, but there was only one girlfriend and one laptop.
Also, as a follow-up, at my company where we were running a few dozen GX270s which we purchased in the 2003-2004 timeframe, we had similar problems. Machines dying which ended up being faulty capacitors, of course not manufactured by Dell. (I had the same problem on an Abit motherboard from the same time period.)
Call up Dell tech support, tell them what's going on, and bam! Motherboard either overnighted, or a tech sent out within two days to replace the board at no cost. They knew what was going on, and it never took more than five or ten minutes to get things rolling. I'm not a Dell fanboi by any means, but every company is going to have supply problems.
I bought three last week, and their customer service already knew what was going on. A tech already came out next-day to replace the faulty components. No questions asked. Next?
