  1. Podcasting rules on Podcasting · · Score: 1

Prior to a few months ago I had no idea what a Podcast was (and this is coming from a computer geek/audio engineer). I suppose it is precisely BECAUSE I'm an audio guy that I was not aware of Podcasts... because I don't have an MP3 player (portable iPod type, anyway). When I want to listen to music, I use a STEREO system, not my computer.

But anyway, in March a friend suggested *I* do a Podcast, and I thought he was crazy. I suggested we do one together, and these few months later, we have 7 episodes in the can, and are having a BLAST.

I really enjoy the freedom the format allows, and the distribution potential of the internet. If you have something to say, do it in a podcast.

As long as I'm posting, check out my sig and give OUR Podcast a listen. I think you'll enjoy it.

  7. Analog tape is used every day. on Last Manufacturer of Pro Analog Audio Tape Closes · · Score: 1

I think the perspective on this web site is skewed. Just because you all have some sort of onboard digital audio in your computer and listen to MP3's and own CD's and DVD's, you think there is no market for analog tape anymore.

You are also interpreting an article about a company "restructuring" as meaning "clearly because I have never seen an analog tape machine in real life, and they haven't used those since the 1940's, no one needs analog tape anymore."

I can assure you that this is not the case. Large recording studios routinely shell out high six-figure and seven-figure dollar amounts for analog recording consoles. These studios also very likely have 48 tracks (2, 24-track machines) of analog audio available. Do they have Protools? Sure, but he point is many people still prefer analog audio and to do a full length project with 48 tracks (all 48 are not usable, but that's another matter) you need SIX reels of tape (not counting safeties). The fact that the tape is expensive doesn't scare someone who can afford to pay $1,000,000 for a recording console.

As I said in another post I have a friend with NINE 2-inch analog machines that he rents to big studios. He also has some 1-inch machines, a few 1/2-inch machines, and a few 1/4-inch machines, ALL of which get used, and require tape.

I have a new reel of Quantegy GP-9 (their flagship product) about 24 inches from my feet as I type this, for an upcoming demo project I'm doing in a local analog room.

Even if Quantegy does not survive these financial woes, I highly suspect that either someone will buy their manufacturing facility and technology from them, or BASF, or perhaps even Scotch re-enter the market to fill this void.

Analog tape machines are not going anywhere. Perhaps Quantegy simply needs to re-assess their business plan and operate from the perspective that the analog tape market isn't what it used to be (I won't deny that) and perhaps is more properly looked at as a "boutique" market.

Is there a difference between compression and signal attenuation (in your example)?

Either way, something loud is being made quieter. This HAS to make the waveform look different, so therefore it is being distorted.

Some more people have posted since I made my post, and they are claiming that a lot of the clipping occurred in tracking, and they didn't want to recut and fix them tracks, they figured they'd fix them in the mix. (yeah, like that will work)

So it sounds me me like this record sounds like shit because it was recorded like shit. I bet the mastering engineer made it sound BETTER. They often can do that.

The good news is that you can't get louder than digital zero... so this trend will have to end eventually. :-)

  24. This is news? on Is Louder Better? · · Score: 0, Troll

Ummmm... this is news? People in the recording industry have known this for a decade.

For me (a recording engineer) I judge the sonics of the record on mix clarity. Can you hear ALL of the instruments ALL of the time? This generally has nothing to do with loudness. Were the sounds captured well? Again, this has nothing to do with loudness.

To me, this article sounds like an immature diatribe put forth by some kid with a pet peeve.

He says he LIKED the analog recordings that used TAPE compression to get things louder, as opposed to the modern way of using digital compression (in software or hardware forms).

Well I have bad news for him... TAPE compression is STILL compression, and it STILL distorts (often radically) the waveform into something different than the original input signal. So why is one better than the other? Perhaps he's answering a question that I already know the answer to (the whole analog vs. digital argument.)

Does this guy think that back in the analog "day" that analog compressors weren't put into the signal path when mastering the recordings to vinyl? Of course they were, and THOSE distorted the signals also.

I haven't heard the new Rush album, but now I'll have to. I suspect it sounds fine, and it's just had all of the dynamics squeezed out of it. Or maybe it was simply recorded and mixed like shit and would sound horrific whether or not is was mastered too loudly.

So is it the volume or the distortion that this guy doesn't like? Because if it's the distortion he'd better tell Lifeson to turn off those Marshalls. ;-)

Look, I like dynamics left in my recordings also, but there are FAR worse engineering crimes out there other than mastering too loudly.

What about those earlier Rush records where Peart's drum heads were taped up so much it sounded like he was beating Tupperware?

And to the guy who likes the way the records on Nuclear Blast sound and congratulates their european engineers? Well, I did two records for that label in a NY studio. Sorry, no European engineers were on those sessions at all.
