First we had Rocket Jesus, a.k.a Elon Musk, and now we have Nuclear Jesus, a.k.a Leslie Dewan. Although, molten salt does remain (eventually) a viable idea.
This article is poorly titled. It should probably be, "Alcohol Abuse Causes 1 In 20 Deaths." Just about anything out there has the potential to be misused and abused.
California is really becoming a nanny-state now. Laws shouldn't be passed to protect people from stupidity. The only protection against stupidity is education. People should take time to learn a thing or two.
Linked-in has done NOTHING to help me get a better job. All linked-in is good for is imposter self-promotion. I've found most of the people I was linked to never responded to messages or anything. I dropped them 2 years ago like a bad habit.
Yes, I am starting to become resentful of all of the technology forced upon me and I don't RTFM. I personally hate the whole so-called Internet of Things. I neither want nor need a smart TV and smart refrigerator. The whole IoT thing is like a solution searching for a problem.
Fortnite is not special, neither is alcohol nor weed nor pills nor social networks. The only thing that IS special, is that our reality is intolerable for more and more people, and they find forms of escape. Can you blame them? For many people, life is just going to work, not having anyone they are close to, and if they are a man, knowing that they are never allowed to cry or express frustration (I guess there is some parallel for women, but I'm not a woman so I do not feel like I should say how they feel). Frankly, I suspect that a lot of modern technology and economy are just dedicated to create ways for people to escape the empty lives that they have.
Reality has gotten really grim for many people because upward mobility is difficult, if not impossible now and people are looking for a way to escape the reality. This might also be a reason for the uptick in gun violence. The problem is the ever widening gap between the wealthy and working classes.
I am reading White Trash: The 400 Year Old History of Class in America. It's really eye opening and challenges everything I ever learned in grade school about American history.
How is slavery America's "peculiar institution"? Slavery has existed for centuries in many countries. It still exists to this day, even though people continue to ignore it.
So what about people who are unable to have children, will they get offended by references to 'parent'?
This has gotten out of hand, definitely.
No, it really hasn't. It's time to drop the terms master and slave as they are an anachronism today. I want to see that terminology dropped from DNS as well. There's no harm in using Primary and Secondary as terms. A little bit of understanding and sensitivity goes a long way towards making the world a better place to live,
The internet life is a lonely, and sometimes boring, life. There is a known psychological correlation between loneliness, boredom, and stress. I think that is what the article is alluding to. Money is not a cure for depression and anxiety; simply ask the wealthy that are on antidepressants and seek out therapy and counseling.
Weatherbug was pretty careful not to make the leap that Florence is a result of climate change. They had an article speculating that the reason Florence became so strong is the result of a Bermuda high which is in an unusual position for the year. The article's author felts that the blocking high was keeping Florence over warmer water so it could strengthen. Typically September hurricanes turn back out to sea.
I have to give him credit for pushing an ambitious agenda, but how's he gonna get the world's fifth largest economy there? Maybe he'll ban out-of-state gas-powered cars from crossing over CA state lines? Ban most forms of manufacturing in the state?
The only way CA could possibly get there is a huge expansion of nuclear power, and they're an earthquake prone state full of anti-nuclear NIMBYs.
More importantly, IMO: He's missing the real problem on CO2 emissions. If he really wants to make a difference for CA and the world in the long haul, he should get on the horn to China and get them to slow down their coal-fired plants. Maybe really go nuts and say that he's not going to allow any Chinese imports into CA ports? Setting a good example for the Chinese with arbitrary CO2 bans isn't going to get them to have a change of heart alone.
That is all California is; ambition without any follow through. Talk is cheap when nothing gets done.
Detroit is having a population and economic boom if we take out some of the under performing districts.
TBH, I am thinking about moving to Flint, MI because it is probably one of the last places in America that I can afford a house on what is essentially a pauper's salary. I don't necessarily care that there is high crime and poor schools. I just want to seek an end to the problem of renting and having my rents go up by exorbitant rates.
California has always had pie-in-the-sky goals. It's one of the worst places to live in terms of cost of living, taxes, etc. I don't even want to visit California let alone live there.
Why do politicians always set such far off goals? Are they doing it to simply make the appearance of doing something? By the time 2045 rolls around, it's already going to be too late to effect any meaningful change. It starts right here, right now... today.
those corporate entities won't just stay home eating cookies. They'll form power structures of their own that are just like governments but without all that pesky "democracy" stuff to get in the way of profits and whatever little project strikes the CEO's fancy (Jeff Bezos is spending his $260 million/day on space travel, which would be peachy if I wasn't paying tax dollars to feed his underpaid/overworked staff)
Well, maybe Anarcho-Communism would be a whole lot better!
to figure out which ISP funded this story? And I'd much rather have my info in the hands of my democratically elected government than a mega corporation that I have zero say in unless I'm a top shareholder.
Not at all! Government abuse of data is a whole lot more rampant than the private sector. If you believe a "democratically elected government" is safer with your info then I have a bridge to sell you.
Anyone that cares can use a VPN and probably should be using a VPN anyway. There are VPNs selling subscriptions for less than a dollar a month.
Just get a VPN and move on.
I am starting to notice that at some public WiFi hotspots, the high port numbers are being blocked precisely to prevent things like this from happening. Of course they claim it is for the "safety" of the network but we know that's not the *real* reason.
It might be possible to use a VPN like OpenVPN to thwart this tracking but I'll bet the LinkNYC folks that about people doing it and probably block high port numbers or some other shady shit.

Just more bullshit corporate speak.

Ajit Pai is a stooge for Big Telecom. Government should not advocate for large business and enterprises but for individual people.
Is this an ad for CloudFlare? I wouldn't touch CouldFlare with a 10ft pole.

Slavery existed long before the 13 colonies.

Yeah, I agree with the OP. There's no good reason for an eSIM.
I get so much spam from Tencent and QQ that I have to outrightly block their IPs to my VM. Tencent is just a really terrible netizen.
If this isn't the fox guarding the hen house, I certainly do not know what is.
