They can try all they like to shed their "down market" image. The bottom line is that I, like many other folks, wouldn't pay top dollar for a Xiaomi piece of garbage.
This ruling is the correct one. Google always whines about lack of competition and net neutrality but the moment someone wants to compete with them, it is "Oh no. We cannot have that." Corporate hypocrisy at its very best.
Corporations are not the best role models at all. Period. They do underhanded and devious things all of the time so the last entity that I want teaching my child about morals is a fucking corporation.
Yes, it is indeed sad. Do you remember Jeff Bezos tweeting out the wage increase to 15.00 per hour? What was left unsaid was that in order to work at Amazon, you basically work through a staffing agency in a so-called temp-to-hire capacity. However, Amazon makes no guarantees of a conversion at all so you work as a temp. My guess is it is cheaper for companies to bring in contract labor because there is no cost of hiring, terminating, or even benefits associated with said labor. It's an underhanded move when the company is wildly profitable and it has made me more and more anti-capitalist as I get older.
Which is worse? The Russian trolls or the fact that people believe them? I think that people believe them is worse because no one does any independent thinking or research anymore. They take what is spoon fed to them as boiler plate. The fact that Russian trolls have been able to influence US elections is an indictment on the US educational system or lack thereof.
Since just about everything electronic is made in China, it's no small concern that spyware might be embedded in the electronics. It's a well-known that China tries to bruteforce attack Linux and Unix-like servers on the SSH port so it doesn't take a leap of imagination to believe that China is trying to actually build spyware into the electronics it exports. I have a firewall log full of ChinaNet IP addresses that have tried to gain access to my small, personal web and email server. It's a good thing I disabled password-based authentication... everything is done through public and private keys. After all, China is a surveillance state and seeks to steal intellectual property or government secrets from other countries.
Users of the OpenBSD versions (including portable) of SSH is not vulnerable to this issue. The OpenBSD OpenSSH uses its own version of libssh. You guys are safe.
AI requires a lot of education and quite a background in technical expertise. It's great that there are many openings but the path to obtain the job is out of reach for a lot of people. It's certainly out of reach for me at 41 years old. I really hate the whole concept of AI because it is putting people out of work and interfacing with it is annoying, at best. I hate the telephone systems that try to interpret natural language to get you to "the right representative." It ends up being an exercise in frustration. What this sounds like is Late Stage Capitalism.
It did not become generally affordable to the masses until around early 2009 when we saw the beginnings of unlimited cell usage at a fixed price point courtesy of Boost Mobile. In January of 2009, Boost introduced an unlimited phone plan for 50.00 and it touched off a revolution. Before that time, plans were metered and expensive.
I am an Amateur Extra and I refuse to be a part of ARRL. They've lost their direction as an advocacy group for amateur radio. They have moved in a direction that is not conducive to promoting the hobby.
This won't solve the problem because you can take all of the steps mentioned and the device still won't be secure because the software to power the device is poorly written and full of exploitable holes like buffer overflows and null pointer de-references. In an effort to get devices out on the market, security is at best, an afterthought, or at worst, the manufacturer doesn't really care until it gets caught with its pants down. And even the ensuing fine and punishment will be substantially less than what they've earned on the product. Corporations just see it as a calculated profit/loss model.
America is in decline due to Late Stage Capitalism. In Trump's perfect America, there will be the rubbish people and the wealthy; not talking about white trash because there will no longer be any racial element, only class.
Security in the United States is nothing more than theater starring overzealous, badge-got-to-their-heads TSA screening agents whom, more often than not, miss critical items when searching luggage. Many TSA screening agents barely have a high school education and fewer still have advanced degrees. If we were serious about security, it would be professional. Instead, it's a dog and pony show.
Given corporations' notorious attitude towards security as an afterthought, what happens when the inevitable intrusion occurs and a treasure trove of biometric data gets into the hands of some very bad actors. I think we are really in peak technology at this point and most new solutions aren't solving problems but are solutions looking for problems. I am going to stick to the old fashioned way of simply producing an ID and boarding pass. I can see the advantage of the mobile boarding pass and I do use that but we have recently hit the point where technology ceases to solve problems and may actually be creating more problems.
I hope it never gets approved because Apple is not in the business of selling medical devices. There is no way an Apple watch is going to be more accurate or reliable than a true ECG machine.
Tencent, along with QQ, represents the shithole of the internet. I've had to block their entire assignment of IP addresses because nothing but intrusion and spam-sending attempts come from them. Good riddance!
This is even more reason to delete Facebook. Facebook is ultimately a failed social experiment. Here's to hoping it continues a decline in popularity.

What is it with corporations and their leadership these days? They criticize others about the behaviors they themselves engage in.

What is it with all of these tech companies with unicorns farting rainbows?

I use it for everything I do. It's my desktop, server, topper, and firewall. If it won't run on OpenBSD, I'm not interested.

I absolutely hate it! AI is causing jobs to disappear and making interactions far more impersonal.

Google could act as a contract spy agency for the CIA inside of China? Take a play from China's playbook ....

Folks, this is just Late Stage Capitalism greed. I am hoping all this greed will one day just be these guys undoing.

Someone impresses me! He gave up 850M for a principle. I have to give the man his due respect.
