    There is no substitute for good old optimisation. Efficient memory usage, looping techniques and a little thought towards to branching can go a long way. That, and batch processing on multiple cores takes a fair bit of beating when the clock is ticking. I realise that there is still some *big* gains from finer grained parallelisation but I see a lot of coding behaviors that would never have been used ten years ago.

    Compared to some of the perl scripts I've seen, I thought it was rather elegant. So, yes, the GP is a shame to the profession. Must be a perl newbie. Never mind, another couple of years of solid perl and it'll be compacted to 19 or so characters.

    Actually, I'd like to see some formulas for the progression of perl programmers. Clearly, reducing the number of characters by 50% for each year is too simple. Damn. I see some irony approaching.

    and that doesn't apply to the ipod because..... when I walk into a store there are about one hundred different mp3 players for sale. I choose one that is lightweight, and in my opinion, better. The one that I choose does not require iTunes to be installed to use the thing. I can use libusb if I want to.

    Ahh. But you can spot the chapters in those books that were written by Gentry Lee and those by Arthur C. Clarke (This news really, really saddens me ... Rest In Peace). Many chapters focused on human behaviors while others were filled with math and concepts. It was very clear who wrote what.

    For me, you hit the nail squarely on the head. I switched about 5 years ago because library management was becoming a pain. Now, things change when I want them to change. Churning out C code is much, much easier under Linux.

    Just curious, what is VB used for that fortran can't do? Fortran code is pretty quick to knock up, especially for quick calculation work.
