I'm not denying anyone. Some people I'll offer to help, some I don't. No one is at my door begging for a computer. And no one is entitled to my time or anything else. But if someone has a kid and no system or is a shut in, I'll find and fix up something for them. I've probably re-tasked 20 or so systems in the last 10 years. My brother started a charity that does the same thing on the business level, referbing old office systems to give to the disadvantaged. He gets no pay for that, but there are employees that work there.

The hardware is easy, it's not wasting the resources or my time that make me not give some people a system. Oh, no systems are sitting in closets at my house. I find or piece together the systems I give out. Sometimes they even come back after 5 - 10 years, and if I can I'll send them out again. My biggest problem is lack of I/O devices and a plethora of 17" CRT displays.

I do the same thing but I've learned to be a bit selective as I end up being the free support/tutorial source for most of the recipients. As a pre-offer screening test I normally hold my hand up at shoulder height and tell them "You must be this smart to use the internet". If they give me the old twisting their head to the side thing (like a dog would), then I don't offer a computer. If they laugh or attempt to elicit some elucidation then they can have a box if they like.

The dial-up thing is going away as fewer of them have land lines. I have noticed that every time I have hooked a Sprint phone to a system via USB I get asked if I want to use it as a modem.... so that may come into play if the service is included in the phone plan.(I've never used it that way).

  10. Re:Here's hoping they can track down peanut allerg on Researchers Pinpoint Cause of Gluten Allergies · · Score: 4, Interesting

You can acquire an allergy via exposure. A good example is powdered latex gloves. The powder, usually corn starch, picks up small amounts of latex protein and rubs it into the pores of your skin. The powder can also get into the air and carry latex into the lungs. As exposure continues, the risk of having a problem rises. This is a large issue for health care workers, and many of them are switching to non-powdered vinyl gloves. ANYONE can get a reaction if they get enough exposure, but it may take 20 years for some people to see an effect. Other people do have a predisposition to develop food or other allergies, there is more information available here.

I agree that a powerpoint presentation tends to remove some flexibility from the teachers toolkit. There is also a timing factor to be considered. When a slide changes in an instant, the nimble mind tends to sideline whatever mental process was going on in order to focus on the new data. This is normal as the new data may have some bearing on the current process, but I think it can lead to a sort of induced Attention Deficit Disorder. I believe writing things by hand gives the previous information some time to sink in and integrate while the next set of data is slowly being revealed. That's not to say that projected presentation in not useful, but I think it should be at best a secondary mode of communication with students.

Third, no one has broken the sound barrier at sea level without propulsion, lots of people break the sound barrier everyday.

This guy will be wearing an armor suit that will make Joe Kittinger's rig look a lot like paper mache... but that was what Joe was doing, making sure it could be done.

Also, what IS the speed of sound at 100,000'? I would not be surprised if Joe already "broke the sound barrier" due to the altitude.

Adding approximately 20% to the jump is no big deal if you have a real, tested, space suit and know that someone with 1960's tech already jumped from 102,000'.

I agree. I just took an elderly neighbor to get a Trac Phone at Kmart and no ID or info was required. He buys minutes on cards at the local dollar store. I don't know if he uses a credit (or ATM) card for that but I know he doesn't HAVE to, he can pay cash. Also, there is nothing forcing him to immediately add the minutes to the phone. Oh, he also has more than one Trac Phone, so he could add the minutes to either one of them... he used to live in another state and since he needs to change his number now, he figured he'd get a new phone at the same time.

Now, as to whether his image is stored on a hard drive at the point of purchase, I can't say... Be on the lookout for an old, short, white guy in a ball cap, can't be too many of those in a retirement state.
