Then you have those 50-60mpg Japanese cars with 3 cylinders being sold here in this area, that is just laughable. Even 4-cylinder Japanese SUV's here are a joke. The USA is too spaced out and has too much hills and warm/cold areas to get a car built to drive in Tokyo. One of my friends has a 4-cylinder Japanese SUV with 7 seats and when it goes uphill on a 15% slope at 35mph it makes unhealthy noises (grinding in the engine) while traffic is building up behind them (the speed limits are 45mph).

Try a Subaru. I can start on a 15% grade with ease in the snow. The only places where a large SUV has a clear advantage is in cargo space, though I can still hold a lot for a mid-sized vehicle, and in very deep snow (>15") where I don't have the ground clearance. I've only got 130k miles on it so far, but it's still got no non-standard maintainence. It's even got the original clutch. I know many Subaru owners who have pushed cars into the 250-300k mile range.

Ok, this is obviously bullshit. If the store sells more, they'll order more from the producer.

I realize I am the minority in this, but there are albums/movies/games/etc. that I REFUSE to download simply because I want to show my support for that particular artist/movie/whatever...often times, however, downloading from a torrent is the only way that I have been able to find a CD.

Almost everything is for sale on the internet somewhere. I suspect this is a another bullshit argument to justify the fact that you're too lazy to look and too cheap to buy it. I also suspect that your moral stand against downloading things from certain artists is stronger on Slashdot than in real life, especially given the tone of the rest of your posts.

The rest of your argument boils down to "I want things for free!!!". Well, tough shit. Why should you get other people's work for free?

Most modern cars last 150K+ miles easily, provided they're driven by someone who isn't constantly pushing the limits of the vehicle. The fact that no one will repair banged up sheet metal or broken plastic parts so hitting a deer runs you $5000 has roots in the same throwaway culture, but isn't caused by lack of initial quality.

I did this during the summers in college (very few internships available right after the tech bubble burst, especially for underclassmen with no practical experience). I worked the nightshift in a grocery warehouse freezer. It was not a fun job - 0 degrees for most of the night, paid by how fast you worked so everyone neglected safety, especially each other's, difficult labor and an absense of a social life because you're on an inverted schedule. It paid $15-17/hr though, which is nothing to sneeze at in the rural parts of central PA, especially with the economy in a downturn.

I can't believe that you actually got three responses agreeing with this. He was in a campus library during a time when only students are allowed to be present. It was a campus policy that proof of being a student should be delivered upon request during these hours. The order of magnitude of the police response is out of whack with his actions, but the resquest to present ID was reasonable. If a police officer pulls you over to let you know you've got a taillight out and asks you for your license, will you tell him to fuck himself? I certainly hope you have more common sense than that.

No one living in this setting is forced to use mass transit or walk to the corner store, but it's at least possible, which it is not in the typical development.
