I cut my teeth on BASIC on an Apple ][+, and wrote my first professional-grade program (a math tutor) on it when I was 12. I have a lot of fondness for BASIC. These days, if I were to teach a kid any language, it would be Python. It has the easy syntax of BASIC with the added advantages of (a) a rich enough API set for everything from web development through machine learning (b) being an actual marketable skill in places like Silicon Valley.
I'm not saying BASIC is a bad choice, just that I think there are much better ones.
But I understand why the poor guy is making it. Unless BlackBerry adopts the Android OS or Samsung changes their minds about a buyout, BlackBerry is screwed. As in, short your positions and make a mint in 2015, screwed.
Their main competitor in the personal computing space is Microsoft. Their main competitor in the much bigger mobile device space is Samsung. And right now, Samsung is devouring them with their Galaxy line of phones, tablets, and smart watches.
Have you investigated the performance/cost of hybrid versus pure-SSD? I use pure SSD on my laptop and desktop and it's brilliant, but I don't have to cram 2TB+ of SQL Server data stores on my desktop.
Actually, it's three different state measures, and each state has different rules about what the election results mean. In Oregon, the measure is now law, and the state government is now tasked with figuring out how to carry out the law. They have to come up with regulatory bureaus, figure out who will collect the taxes (likely the Oregon Liquor Control Commission), come up with licensing rules for new shops, make time for new shops to be licensed, instruct police on the changes to criminal code (e.g. you can smoke in private but not in public, you can only have so much weed, you can only have so many plants), and so on.
Alaska has different rules. So does DC.
Also, there's a complicating factor in that marijuana is still illegal. State law might say it's okay, but Federal law says it's still an illegal narcotic. A US Attorney with their head up their asses can prosecute every weed shop and weed grower in each of these states; even worse, they can seize all these shops' assets and the assets of all the people owning or employed by those shops, and sell those assets prior to trial. If you ask me, the Democrats have a winning issue in 2016 (or 2018, which would be a harder cycle for them) if they run on allowing states to make their own decisions about marijuana.
Also, never be afraid to learn your math in a physics course. It's the best way.
That kinda depends...I found it was easier just taking more math courses than trying to figure out what the hell my EM professor was doing. Eventually I just switched majors to Math.
...double major in something useful and something useless.
I majored in math and computer science. I have a friend who went back to school in her 30s. Her majors are German and Philosophy. She's already getting translation work a year before graduation.
I downloaded the album (Free U2? Okay!) and have listened to it a couple of times in the car. It's not bad. Not exactly world-shattering --- they haven't done world-shattering in 20 years --- but enjoyable.
Even if she doesn't have the academic background (I agree with others that ME is close enough to CE/EE to pass muster), she certainly has the experience.
...the obnoxious, stupid, piggish behavior will just take on a more inclusive veneer, as it does with other forms of commercial art (music, movies, tv, etc.)
I don't doubt that Blue Origin, like Bezos's most famous project (Amazon), is constantly engaged in R&D. But like Amazon, it appears that Blue Origin is trying to patent stuff that shouldn't be patented (in this case because of prior art). That's patent troll behavior.
Iran's government is fighting over whether or not to implement rusting-edge technology, with calls for impeachment if they go ahead. It's like they WANT to remain in the 8th Century. Why is it exactly that we're afraid of them?
I work in a unionized software shop. It's awesome during bad times. In good times one is tempted to think it's better in fast-and-furious start-ups, but then one compares one's salaries and benefits and realizes, "no, actually, union shop is still better."
Project management, specifically the importance of not being a bottleneck.
How to design a solution on my own time before I code a solution on company time.
Differential diagnosis of bugs (see #2 of the link above --- although I learned this skill later in graduate school and have applied it multiple times since.)
Code for readability and correctness first, efficiency later. Code that is "too clever" will never be maintained (except by you).
I really enjoy programming as a way of automating tasks and not for other reasons --- which makes me better as a systems administrator than as a software developer.
"I know a place
Where you're all going to go
They'll pay you to kill
If You're eighteen years old
First You'll need a haircut
And then some new clothes
They'll stick you in a jungle
To play G.I. Joe
CHORUS:
You fight for democracy
And the "American Way"
But you're not in your country
"What am I doing here?" you say
But now it's too late
You're entering Managua
If you had brought your surfboard
You could surf Nicaragua
And that will then give me one USB-C power adapter, one HDMI, and one USB. Hub and SD card reader sold (and powered) separately. Brilliant!

Maybe I can get a Lenovo laptop at deep discount and put Mint/KDE on it.
Translation: our laptops are for consumers to buy crap online, and not for any kind of serious work.
Good to know!

...that Australia is increasingly assuming a Chinese, rather than Anglo-American, system and style of government?

Now all their presentations will be in comic sans. :(

Yeah, I was about to say.....that sentence alone tells me the author doesn't have a clue what they're writing.

Whodathunk?

"IF" is a powerful word, and can trick one into presuming that the predicate is true. Have you actually watched any of her videos?

Let's celebrate like topologists --- with donuts and mugs of coffee!
It's not a very good pun.
A good pun would present, on the surface, a deeper knowledge of the (admittedly complex) material.
