SQL Server really does have good online documentation. Just search for "SQL Server [feature]" and pick the MSDN link. In this case, I searched for XML INDEX. http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb934097.aspx

Oracle supports XML Types with XPath style queries. I don't remember any XML Indexes, but you can always use a function based index against the XPath.

I completely agree. A lot of non-DB centric people think that they can do more in the app tier, effectively using their databases as glorified file stores. Why even have a database server in those instances? I'm not saying that everything should be done in the database, either, but take advantage of every tool you have.

NoSQL has a place, so does relational. Learn their strengths and determine which is the best fit for your project. Then, learn how to use the tool to its fullest.

And I can tell you that the items you listed are not handed unless constructed to be so (curve of the handle).

However, I think the study failed to take into account that certain sports (such as golf and bowling) don't involve cooperation but should have a decided advantage for lefties. In golf, the course is usually set up to challenge a right-handed golfer based on the typical ball path which is the opposite path for a leftie. Same for bowling, oil patterns break down for righties more because more carry-down happens when more righties bowl on the lanes. If you are the only leftie on the lanes, your line holds a lot longer.

Because it's the closest thing to a true write-once / run-anywhere model that's working. A web app will run on the desktop, tablets, e-readers, consoles (Wii has Opera), phones (even many of the average-intelligence phones). Mac, Linux, PC. Sure, there are some browser issues, but those can generally be overcome by switching browsers when that is an option. I still think we need native apps, but not everything needs direct access to hardware or complex calculations that would call for it.

The biggest problem with non-native apps is that they don't model the host environment -- but that's more about the designer being lazy than it is a technological hurdle (it isn't "easy", but it can be done). If a web app looked like Metro on MS devices and iOS on Apple devices, who would care whether it was a web app or a native app?
