What about the crowd that I fall into? I read the summary. If it is remotely interesting to me, I read the comments. If there are a significant number of relevant comments, I'll venture to read the article. If they are full of trolls and flames, then I skip the article. I'll post comments that are on-topic (to the parent post, not necessarily to the article). And my ID# isn't prime because 980662 is divisible by 2 [probably others, but failing that one is the quickest prime test: !(ID&1)].

I would think that a specific motion (think: jiggle) would be more appropriate for a non-clicking interface. Time spent at a location would vary, but imagine if the "click" action was a quick jiggle perpendicular to the current motion. As you move left to right on the screen, when you wanted to "click", you jiggled the mouse in an up/down fashion. Granted, RSI and all would probably go up significantly, but it would be more responsive than timing a pause.

As an aside, Dasher (http://www.inference.phy.cam.ac.uk/dasher/) was an interesting non-clicking method for entering text. I can't view the web site due to the Slashdot effect.

Actually, I'm moving the mouse cursor out of the way so I can read. I specifically look for non-clickable areas of a page to click on so that I can grant focus to the page in such a way that my keyboard controls (page up / page down / scrolling with arrow keys) work effectively. Then, as needed, I'll move the mouse around. This method eliminates a lot of those keyword pop-up windows that a lot of pages like to add these days. If I do keep my hand on the mouse, I'm not following my reading, I'm "twiddling" in blank space on the page, again, to keep the pointer out of the way.

I was merely referring to the fact that the parent-parent-parent post said that CD's would play "forever". If you don't think a technology goes out of manufacture, I have some old Beta tapes that I need converted to DVD. Can you buy a consumer grade Beta player for me? Or maybe the laserdisc version of Star Wars? My grandmother has some reel-to-reels of my deceased grandfather playing guitar and harminoca. I think she even has some 8-tracks he made, too. (And yes, all of those items are real items that I can access, not some fictitious items made up for a rant.)

I still buy CD's, but I don't have the expectations that I'll be able to use them 30 years from now. I was just saying that the only way to ensure that you have a media format that will be playable in 50 years is to rely on the lowest tech version of them all.

I've been playing NetHack since the late 80's (1988 to be exact) and still have it installed on several computers (including the PocketPC version for my phone). It is a great time waster that has had me hooked for almost 20 years.

The only media that you can be sure will be playable in many years is vynil. If you have an unscratched master CD, but there are no CD players, how will you do it? You can make a working record player out of a motor, some gears, and something pointy on a moveable arm. to hear better, you might consider some sort of amplifier, and I'm not talking about the electronic type....think low-tech cardboard megaphone.

The parent post is alreday +5 Insightful, but I'd like to add that another way to get better at programming is to find a mentor.....a good mentor. I made the biggest leap in my ability during my first job (which was rather fortunate). I was on a team of young guys, but we were all sharp. Where one of us lacked, the other was strong. After 5 years, I was a very well rounded programmer. I try to continue that by always having someone that I've taken under my wing to mentor as well. So, if you're in Austin and want a top notch database programmer (not a DBA) to be your mentor, look me up.

Another area that will help you is breadth of knowledge. You don't have to be an expert in everything, but be aware of many fields (different tiers, different languages, different layers of the network model, what have you). This helps because you will quit fighting to put part of a solution in the wrong layer. If you can push it to the right layer, your solution will turn out better (easier to write, easier to maintain, more robust code, better overall design).

I think I'll have to revise that to a day or two just because of all the product pricing crap that will now show up in my search results.

Google has more than enough money. They can live without the few cents more that they'll get from spamming me. Or better yet, once someone else makes a better unencumbered search engine, we'll all migrate to it. I seem to recall there being other "best" search engines before Google came along (Yahoo, Lycos, Webcrawler, Altavista, etc.). Each one lost favor because they started adding bloat to the searching process. When will they all learn?

Just out of curiosity, how does a rocket really work? IAMNA-Rocket Scientist, but my understanding was that the explosion happened in a tube, one end open, the other closed. Thrust was generated not by the escaping gas out the back but by the pushing effect on the closed end. So in effect, captured things in a tube were the net cause of a rocket launching.

If he can come up with a way to "recapture" those things in the very same tube and have that result in additional thrust, why not? It's no different than any other attempt at efficiency (such as using waste heat to drive a turbine).

What is regenerative breaking in hybrid cars but an attempt to capture some of the work performed by the engine to generate electricity which can be in turn used to create more thrust and more regenerative breaking, etc. If we had 100% efficiency, we'd have perpetual motion, but there is loss.....

Speaking of which, why haven't we ever tried to use the heat generated by our internal combustion engines to push a turbine? Or the heat generated by our a/c units? There has to be some way there to reclaim some of that lost power.

    I've always considered myself bi-handed.

Most things, I do either exclusively left-handed or exclusively right-handed. At least "normally". There are special cases where I will use the other hand for a task, but there are usually reasons (for instance, eating at a very crowded table and not getting a "lefty" seat). And (being the analytical geek that I am) after analyzing it, I've determined what makes me favor one hand vs the other.

    Things I do left handed:
Eat (here being bi-handed is plus, fork in left, knife in right, no switching)
    Write
    Bat @ baseball ***
    etc.

    Things I do right handed:
    Shoot a gun
    Mouse
    Bowl ***
    Golf
    Use scissors
    Throw
    Bat @ baseball***
    etc.

Basically, if you need special equipment to do it with one hand vs the other hand, I use my right. It's far easier to find a right handed glove. Right handed scissors are everywhere. Etc. I call out Bowling because balls are drilled either left handed or right handed. Batting @ baseball, I can switch hit.

As for the gross vs fine movement, my right is much stronger but my left is much quicker. That might have some impact on that as well.
