Maybe I'm just oblivious.
* Change Ubuntu Linux's resolution to 640x480.
Now change it back without using secret,
hidden key commands. It can't be done.
That's a non-user-friendly design.
Oh! Oh! Can I play too?
Install Office 2007 on a machine running 800 x 600 or less, then go to the "Options" menu screen and try to find the "OK" and "Cancel" buttons.
I'm about 50% through "I Wanna Be The Guy" and can attest to it's utterly unforgiving, cute, hilarious, nostalgic, free, old-school platformer game play.
The problem here is that computer use is a technical subject.
You reminded me of something I've said in the past.
Computers are an immensely powerful tool/device. They are also in their infancy, and/or perpetually changing so that the day they become easy to use is far, far off in the future. I posit that placing someone with little to no training in front of a computer and expecting them to use it properly while avoiding pitfalls to accomplish their task is similar to placing an untrained person in a fighter plane, and expecting them to enter a dogfight and win. I wouldn't expect them to get off the ground, let alone win a dogfight.
I don't have any insight or answers tot his problem that I'm confident with. It's just an observation I've made and something I tell people when they want to know why I think a typical computer user has so much trouble using one.
I'm with you. The reason I feel so confident walking around and fixing my user's problems even though I may never have worked with the program they are using before, is because menus make things easy to find. http://www.xkcd.com/627/
Now that our users have Office 2007, it's a fumbling match between me, the user, and the software one with which I've never seen before in my life. If these contextual menus persist, we'll all be lost, not just the regular users. When your IT guy is confused, then where do you turn?
Just like Windows Media Player?
Funny, I don't feel I should have to hold alt just to get a view I'm happy with. Am I crazy to think it should be there permanently?
Not only that, but the Apollo missions heavily leveraged this concept in multiple ways, the most obvious was traveling around the moon instead of going straight to it, then straight back. Talk about old news.
If the guy behind the fork (Fred) is to be believed, MegaSquirt is not properly open sourced (it can be closed at any time by the developers). That I believe is his main problem with the project.
For full disclosure, I spent some time working on a tuner for DIY-EFI and plan on working more with it once my other automotive problems are fixed.
Not to mention the connections between nodes can evolve. You could have a couple connections to a node from one area one day and then those connections could disconnect and connect somewhere else. That might be able to be simulated with silicone, but it certainly can't be copied. You'll need something less rigid than a solid chip.
I apologize if my understanding of light and it's properties go slightly beyond that in the Wikipedia article but for everyone slamming "UnHolier than ever "you might spend some time reading up on the subject (go beyond Wikipedia). Light always travels the same speed no matter what medium it is traveling through. It's rate of travel appears to slow, when in actuality it's path merely gets longer.
Yes, of course I chose to buy the Windows CD. That doesn't make it any different than choosing to buy a computer.
I chose to buy the Windows CD because I wanted it for use as a nerdy coaster. I am not interested in the data/software/EULA contained within.
Same as if I bought a computer, and am forced to pay for an OS I'm not interested in (so I'm allowed a refund).
Why can't I get a refund for the OS I'm forced to buy with the compact disc I wanted to buy?
Seems like the same thing to me.
I agree with the spirit of your post. I wonder what would happen if we did this though...
Software and blank CD media are clearly two different markets. You can install Windows on blank CD media from a number of vendors, and you can use a number of blank CD media on a PC.
So you would buy blank CD media and you would get two receipts, one for the blank CD media and another one for the OS....snip...
If you don't want the operating system, you just buy the CD media and don't pay for the activation key.
I'm pretty curious and this idea just popped into my head. I'm sure the answer is easy, so I'll ask.
What's the difference between buying a computer and getting a refund for the cost of the Windows EULA (since apparently you're actually receiving the operating system data, yet agree not to "use" it) and buying a Windows XP CD and attempting to get a refund for the cost of the EULA if you just want the data, but agree not to "use" it. Say you want it for a coaster, art project, or other use.
The fact that parts of MS are closed source now (when originally they weren't) and the license it's under allows for this means that MS is not open source the way most of us like to see.
www.freeems.org is currently the front runner from what I've seen as far as true open source engine management is concerned.
Dev 1: How the hell do we make these glass tubes uniform in color, density and size with varying solar power input to our device?
Dev 2: I dunno, that's a tough problem, we should give it a week and see if we can figure it out.
one week later
Dev 1: You got anything?
Dev 2: Not a thing.
Dev 1: Me neither. Fuck it. Let's call it art and be done with it.
Good thing I never moved on from Altavista. I use Mapquest, my ISP e-mail, etc.
Every Google problem makes me laugh. I don't ever touch their services.
Then again, I'm still using WinZip 7.0, AIM 5.9, WinAmp 5.0, etc.
Humans still decent at survival! News at 11.
I've done a hardware repair on a client's computer who smokes.
Never again.

I will give Spelunky World a try when I'm finished with IWBTG.
No way!
That was the stage I was talking about.
All these years I thought it couldn't be done.

So I guess you could never beat Mega Man 2 then aye?
(For those who don't know, you have to die at least once to beat the game.)

No?
It look me about 3 seconds to find an example.

Not that I'm in favor of ribbonizing Firefox. I'm not. I just like to prove people wrong, and you were such a juicy target.

Does that logic not follow?

You'll get a total of two types, liars who give you nothing or fakes, or idiots you actually give you this info.
So which type are you? Wait, don't tell me...
I don't think that word means what you think it does.
I'm not sure which you're confused on though.

I never jumped on the Google bandwagon because Altavista was always good enough for me.
The results look almost identical to Altavista results.
No paradigm shift for me.
