The touch screen laptop i got my wife for christmas has windows 8 on it and it looks like the teething problems with that OS are mostly resolved as well. As easy to use as our Android phones and still compatible with software we've had for years. 2 weeks of constant use and not a hiccup so far.
Anecdotes are anecdotes, but it's funny that these days I see a lot of Facebook friends ranting about some problem or other with their IOS/OSX devices. Often followed by a sarcastic comment about "it just works". When Apple devices fail, I think it hits harder lol.

Yeah wow, they've managed to be amazing by putting the same hardware as everyone else, minus removable batteries and SD card slots into a phone. Of course the lack of those is entirely to compel upgrades and has nothing to do with form factor or any of the other BS Apple likes to proclaim. Risk paranoia in modern business is going to hit them harder than others I think. Without a Steve Jobs to force through something bold and ballsy from time to time, they will listen too much to the risk managment types while they miss the next big thing (tm).
This insistence that everything is in the 'cloud' is getting really old, particularly with Android. There are occasions dear Google when someone is offline. I don't want to have to store my Earth KML files on Drive to view on mobile Earth app. I don't want to have to connect my android phone via USB to copy or move things around on my SD card. I don't want to have to print over the internet. Whatever networked fantasy land you live in at GoogleHQ, is not reality. If I wanted to be restricted to what I could do with my devices "for my own good", I'd go back to the iPhone. You are rapidly chipping away at my reasons for switching to Android.
Was Hobbit perfect? No, of course not. However, it could have been much, much worse. I'll point you to the epic ruination of Starship Troopers or the somewhat lesser mangling of Ender's Game or the utter crap fest of Battlefield Earth (strip out the thinly disguised Scientology elements and you still have the bones of a good story). These are books I grew up with and I felt real excitement knowing they would finally be movies... Then I saw the movies...
For all the purists that think every line of dialog should be preserved to properly honor J.R.R. I'd like to mention Dune. I've worn out copies of this book. I've got just about every version available of the David Lynch movie. However, I said for a long time that I wish that movie had more from the book and was more faithful. Then I got the Dune mini-series on SciFi channel. It was chock full of hours and hours of dialog. You know what? I can't stand it, it's just boring. Books and movies are different media and just blindly spamming straight from the book does not make an engaging movie.
Had Peter Jackson made the LOTR movie purists wanted, it would have flopped and you wouldn't have gotten The Hobbit at all. Had he made the first Hobbit movie the way purists wanted, we might not have gotten the end of the story (see Battlefield Earth, it's abysmal failure doomed the second movie intended to actually finish the story).
Hey, if you don't like the movies, that's fine. Everyone gets an opinion. However, given the Hollywood track record with adaptations of Sci-Fi/Fantasy, and the need for them to make movies with as broad of an appeal as possible, I think that we actually got far better than we could have expected...

given that after 7 years they have yet to release a conclusion to the cliffhanger ending of Ep. 2 for one of the biggest games ever developed is it any surprise that they won't be releasing SteamBox on time? I've long since stopped caring about Ep. 3 and I won't hold my breath for SteamBox. Even if it is released, will Valve ensure a steady supply of content for it?

You can probably lay this one at the feet of crap companies like UBISOFT. An actual Valve game will likely never be cause for a class action suit. What this is, is an attempt to protect themselves from being the scapegoat for OTHER publishers' stupidity. I'm pointing to the recent announcement that UBIPLAY or whatever it's called has been installing rootkits on users computers. It's not Valve's fault that Ubisoft slipped some crap like this into their installer and they are rightly concerned about being sued for it, even though they are just the delivery boy in this case. With this move, greedy class action lawyers will just bypass Valve and go after Ubi, which is the correct thing to do anyway.
This is a good point. These new MMO's seem to be so dead set on being NOT WOW that they end up making mistakes Blizzard made years ago. If nothing else, WoW can show them what NOT to do, ever. No one expects 7 years of content like WoW at release. What's disappointing with most other MMO's is you've got 7 years of WoW to study, 7 years of failed WoW killers to study and they STILL can't get mechanics, interfaces and quality of life items right.
It's not like they are being tasked with inventing the MMO genre from scratch. It's really a pretty well defined game type. Imagine if someone said they were building the latest wonder car and then proceeded to ignore the last 30 years or so of automotive history. Recipe for failure.
