at the point that this guy was blown up, what was reported and what has not yet changed is that he was isolated in a parking garage and could no longer fire at random people. law enforcement, however, was unable to approach him without being targets. a stand off situation, but with no one in immediate danger. they could have sent a number of things on that robot that might have killed him, but would just as likely incapacitate him. they chose to send the one thing that was certain to kill.
do you see the problem here? deadly force is only authorized to stop someone in the act of, or in imminent threat of harming someone else. once you reach a standoff situation, with no hostages, you can't just kill the suspect because it's the safest solution. that's the kind of thing we criticize Russia for.
" Next step is to eliminate the threat, if cops have to tie a bomb to a robot to do that, so what."
And this is where you are exactly, completely wrong. The role of CIVILIAN law enforcement is to apprehend the suspect using the least amount of force possible and turn them over to the judicial system. they are not there to assign guilt or innocence. they are not there to render punishment. they apprehend, collect the evidence, and that's it. The role of a MILITARY FORCE is to close with and destroy the enemy. I'm not comfortable with the blurring of that line. If they could strap a bomb on it, they could have put gas grenade or flash bang. The went instead for the most lethal option. If the suspect was in fact in a secured location with no means to escape then the correct choice was to wait it out. He will surrender or suicide eventually. It's been around 100 F in Dallas this week, and a few days in an open air parking garage without water would render him too weak to fight or unconscious.
The loss of the headphone jack doesn't just impact 'headphones'. For example I have a chronograph for getting velocities for my ammo reloading. They have a handy mobile app that records shot strings, calculates standard deviation, spread, etc, and allows you to export the data. Guess how they interface between the phone and the chrono? A 15ft cable that plugs into the headphone jack. Before you criticize, keep in mind that this interface has worked flawlessly for me over hundreds of rounds, is compatible with any apple or android smartphone that can still run the mobile app and the cord can be replaced for little cost if damaged or lost. No idea how many other things might use same method...
The problem is millions of iPhone addicted people will buy the new phones and rationalize the loss of the headphone jack away. Other manufacturers will see the massive sales and rather than attribute it to the fact that iPhone users are unable to control themselves, they will decide that the lack of a headphone jack is what is driving sales. So of course they will remove it from their phones too...at that point it doesn't matter if I continue to refuse to by an iPhone, the options are just as crippled.
My first exposure to Nine Inch Nails came from a friend who gave me a copy of Pretty Hate Machine. You can thank that bootleg tape I got in 1990 for all the money I've spent on NIN over the years since then. Tapes, CD's, concert tickets and shwag have all made you (and other bands) richer. I was turned on to NIN and the industrial/electronica genre in general by that one sale you lost out on. Likewise, I've become a fan of and supported many bands that I encountered while doing a little random YouTube browsing and clicking things that looked interesting. I'm so very sorry you don't get a cut of every single play (sarcasm), but you're still winning in the long run.
the same way you seem to feel entitled to do whatever you want, regardless of whether you're a being a dick, because "there's no law against it".
I wonder if any of the people expressing the same opinions as yourself are, or ever have been homeowners in a residential neighborhood. Nothing like having your quiet street used as a shortcut by asshats that can't bear the thought of an extra 5 minutes travel time.
"You seem to forget the crusades and christian missionary expansion"
No one is forgetting it, but that was how many hundreds of years ago? Was Christianity more militant and violent then, sure. The question is why is Islam violent NOW? Given the same amount of time to grow up, why have they refused?
" just whining rightwingers claiming to be victims as usual."
HAHAAAA! As opposed to the democratic party?? As far as (D) is concerned everyone is a victim of something and someone should pay for it. I'm not endorsing Republicans here, but they aren't really the ones making a virtue of victimhood.
People need to wake up to the fact that Facebook is a social experiment. So, yes, manipulating group think based on falsely reporting "trends" that support M. Zuckerberg's personal political leanings is shady at the very least. Also, no one goes to Fox News or the New York Times and gets anything but what they expected to find.
why should these new companies be allowed to continue to use VirusTotal without giving back anything? The companies that do contribute have a cost associated with doing so, but they ALL benefit by contributing in good faith to the same pool. No one is saying these new companies have to lose access, they just won't be allowed to continue leeching the work of others for their own profit. Sounds like the greedy ones are not the contributors...
on the other hand, the manufacturer is a hell of a lot more likely to respond to 100k complaints by Windows users and spit out an updated driver than complaints by 5k linux users.
The current trend in mobile carriers in the US is moving away from the "free with 2 year contract" sales gimmick and phone subsidies. With AT&T the payment options are now pay full price up front, or essentially a 0% financing option over a term you pick from 12 to 36 months. Let me tell you from very recent personal experience, seeing the cost of a new smartphone clearly stated as $700 or x$ per month puts a very fast damper on the desire for a new shiny. I clicked cancel and decided to stick with my perfectly serviceable 2 year old phone for the foreseeable future.
tldr; consumers are finally seeing the real cost of the phones and are walking the other way.
I've found the major cost for glasses is the frames, not the lenses. If you don't care what they look like, most eyeglass places will have plenty of cheap-o frames. If you care even a little bit, the prices go through the roof. My solution, go to eyeglass provider and sample frames to find what I like. Go online and search. You can usually find frames at a fraction of the price and the provider can't really pull out the "we don't make lenses for that brand/model" argument since you can always point to them on display...
"But wait... these are being used as medical devices"
I think hearing aids are going to fall into a gray area. It's a little hard to fool someone as to whether they are providing a benefit. Can't hear well, turn on cheap consumer hearing aid. Can you hear now? Then it's working. A little different from devices that can be dangerous or rely on a placebo effect. Hearing devices for hunters/shooters have been on the market for a long time. Those manufactures are very aware of potential liability, and the devices are probably as safe as any medically approved device.
Now, the benefit of the medically approved version is that an audiologist can map the specific frequencies where you have hearing loss, and the hearing aid can be optimized for that. How much better that is than an across the board amplification I have no idea.
"What makes you think China doesn't also want to keep "the government pork flowing"
Nothing at all. I have no doubt there's government pork involved. However, as the Chinese are relatively new to this manned spaceflight thing, the distribution of that pork is still up for grabs. Here in the US, it's been set for decades and there is probably no way to overcome the inertia associated with it (as far as NASA *** is concerned). Also, the Chinese government won't hesitate to take a heavy handed approach and squash anyone that gets in the way of the ultimate goal. In the US we'll let the NIMBY's and special interests add so many requirements and caveats to a government project that it drowns under the weight.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not really advocating the Chinese way of doing things. I'm just pointing out that it's silly to dismiss their plan as BS, since they don't have to attempt to please everyone. I think 4 years is probably optimistic, but 8 years? yeah, they could do that. Meanwhile, NASA will probably still be running tests of new hardware in LEO and revising the "why we're behind schedule" paperwork again.
***I mean NASA the organization here, I have much respect for NASA the people.
This is what you get when your manned space program is driven by actually having achievable goals than by nostalgia and keeping the government pork flowing. Oh I have no doubt there will be a lot of flag waving and such, but I'll take my hat off to them when they pull off a sustainable colony on the moon. Which event will come long before NASA even manages its publicity stunt manned flight to Mars. Manned space flight is still risky, and you will lose people eventually. NASA has largely decided that the risk of losing people is unacceptable to Americans and they will keep manned projects in design indefinitely to avoid it. Just wait and see. One thing the Chinese have going for them, they won't let loss of life knock their program on its ass. Those lost will be rightly called heroes and will inspire, not terrify, others to follow.
You do understand that your math skills are probably far greater than the majority of parents sending kids to public school right? Your kids are fortunate enough to have a parent that really gets math and can help them understand. Let's face it, not every kid is going to need to do complex math when they grow up. Common Core seems to be very good at teaching kids practical math that they can do mentally. Something the majority of adults I run into seem to have a lot of trouble with. I have two kids in elementary school, and both of them regularly impress with their math skills. I'm OK at math and my wife is actually good at it, so sometimes we cringe when we see their homework assignments, but the facts are, they are learning math, they can apply math even at this age, and they are not intimidated to try more difficult math later on. I always wonder how many kids with actual aptitude have been turned off at an early age because of math taught in traditional ways.
"One that I've noticed is that my feed is just noisier now with Ads, other "of interest" stories that FB feels like shoving in there. The nice friends and family updates I want to see are still there, but I have to scroll through a lot of noise to see them."
This exactly. It's too much work hiding the junk to get to what I used to see immediately. I'll upload some pictures occasionally, and do a random Like if i see something front and center, but I don't have the energy to wade through the junk anymore. I've definitely noticed not just a drop in the amount of posts by most people on my friends list, but the time between posts has increased.
" Unfortunately, as long as Microsoft has the power to coerce OEMs, there will be very few good Linux pre-installed boxes for sale."
Keep telling yourself that and maybe it will come true... MS doesn't really care enough anymore (and has no need) to coerce anyone these days. OEM's look at the cost to support a novice Linux user and run the other way. "What do you mean my |old device| won't work??". Migrating to desktop Linux is only effective when the novice is being migrated by an experienced Linux user. I moved my mother in law to Ubuntu and she likes it. But she also has me to help her out, for free, when she needs it. Although the calls for "I broke it" have dropped, they were largely replaced by "How do I?" calls. A lot of them. No sane OEM would want to push an OS that places them in the position of having to teach users how to use it...they can barely be bothered to support users of Windows.
This is interesting, but why does every new announcement in physics have to be hailed as a potential breakthrough for quantum computers? At the rate of breakthroughs in the last couple of years, we should have had working quantum computers 5 years ago.
