  1. Re:Mice Vs Keyboard on On the Widespread Misuse of the Mouse · · Score: 1

I was asked to write an application which my firm could use as a helpdesk tool I created the core of the application so that using a mouse was not necessary - using alpha-numeric menu's etc. Whilst this took a bit more thought and a bit more design the application works like a dream (if I do say so myself!) The staff who use it rarely need to access any other applications - and so data entry is so much quicker than their old application which relied on click and point drop down menu's etc. Some new starters find it a pain to get used to - but overall I think that it allows much more data to be entered in a shorter space of time - with increased accuracy. The reporting side was far more complex - and needs a mouse to be used - but aside from that it works well and is much quicker.

New Joiners get the benefit of meeting other people starting at the same time as them - and then get the run through on how our systems work - with more structured training for specific applications they may have to use carried out later that week. Its fairly informal but also gives us the chance to go properly through our computer use policy etc. we are finding that fewer people need these intro's as time progresses, however you still get the odd person who is mystified by the whole thing.

I work for a large company who provides this type of service - we typically charge $40 per month per desktop / laptop which allows us to pay a 3rd Party Hardware maintainer for HW Break Fix and still make money, and we do most of the Software Break Fix remotely. We work 8am - 6pm but can work outside of this on a T&M basis (I think it averages out at around $70 - 80 per hour) However - we only really take on clients with 2000 items to be supported - however the figures probably dont alter that much to still make money with smaller clients. We do however where possible offer reduced rates to clients who make use of policies to make sure that users can't screw up machines. The set price per month is handy to ensure that your income is pretty even throughout the year.

My nephew bitched a bit about it becase he can no longer play Hitman 2 on her pc!.. although as he is only 8 I think I was doing his parents a favor! I have 2 computers at home - plus my works laptop. The one which the Kids use has Fedora on it and they use it with no problems - I though they get enougher exposure to MS products at school to be familiar with it - so using Linux at home gives them an extra insight into computers and Operating systems. When they are old enough to go to college I will let them pick what they want and then purchase the rquired hardware for them. I expect my daughter to pick the latest Linux distro, although my son will probably opt for Windows for the gaming.. either way Linux wins as both my kids are experianced with the OS.
