It's nice to see slashdot hasn't lost it's ability to shoot the messenger. Instead addressing his comments, which are pretty much right on, everyone takes the opportunity to point out the designs they feel are worst ever.
Fact is, Open Source will remain counter culture until it has full teams to meet the designs that the public wants, instead of designing to geeks desires.
Except they don't "owe" it. They pay 100% of the taxes they owe. If you feel they should OWE more, then stop voting for people that keep giving them more ways to pay less taxes.
If you could cut your tax bill in half and didn't, you would simply be stupid, if Apple does it, they are criminals.
I suggest that within 5 years players will have stereo camera built into the helmets and 3d VR feeds will be available, for a large fee, from your favorite players helmet live during games.
I don't see any proof of causation, only correlation and even that is not well documented since there is no attempt to correlate programmers to bugs, or application type to bug or industry, etc, etc, etc.
If MOST applications written by crappy programmers are done in a industry that normally attracts people that taught themselves to program yesterday and pays accordingly is there any surprise they might have a lot of security issues?
Wordpress is designed to be used by people that have no idea how to spell security (obviously some "real" programmers use Wordpress but MOST users and the target market are not).
"I have yet to see any solution advanced that is realistic and legal that would have actually prevented any of these shootings."
I don't see you posting a solution either.
I don't believe there is a solution, in the sense that people will accept. I do believe we are headed into a very dark place, 300 million guns in circulation and Black Friday was a record setting day for gun sales. 14 to 18 billion bullets sold every year (depending on whose numbers you believe) enough to shoot every person on the planet twice.
Then consider many of those gun owners have arsenals - some militia's go way beyond "guns" into military equipment , tanks, etc.
Any attempt to take any guns away will be met with resistance, armed resistance, I am convinced, after reading many posts over the years.
My solution? I moved out a long way from any major city or military establishment. We are mostly off the grid, and I plan using the ostrich method of hiding my head in the sand until it all blows over.
I am 65 and retired, and I use hater all the time. So, so much for your theory. I also noted that he was willing to post with a name, as opposed to hiding behind anonymous. Which degrades your post even further in my humble opinion.
I have worked in several major corporations and with probably every language you have ever heard of and then some, and PHP is no different than any there - it is no more secure or insecure than the programmer makes it and the application it is used in.
But, have fun hating, it seems to be what you are best at.
Thew airlock would need to be long enough so that the pressure could be normalized before the outer door is opened, while the rocket is traveling at Mach 3. Probably in the neighborhood of a mile or two if you pressurized the airlock in one second.
Constant/repetitive cycling of the pressure would certainly be very stressful to the structure.
I see a business opportunity for someone to offer a certification service for dice. And for an additional fee dice could be "shaved" to balanced them correctly to meet some optimum randomness. And for a larger fee, they could be shaved to unbalance and provide specific rolls more often than random.
The only limits on their lying is the amount of profit or loss they will experience. So, they balance the extra sales/profit against a bad news cycle or dying off a death benefit and make the decision based on profits. Nothing else matters in this world.
Because we have a constitutional right to blow things up, like Beer bottles and watermelons. And if someone disagrees with us we can blow them up too, because the world needs less stupid people.
No, as soon as Apple releases it, it will make money. Samsung has not had a good track record on profits from the phone line. Apple prefers to let others test the waters and design the leading/bleeding edge. They always have.
This would be Samsung? That is the company that just started NOT LOSING money on every phone they sell? I think Apples priority is to make money and let others pioneer the technology - as they have always done and hopefully will always do. If you want bleeding edge stuff, cool, go for it, just don't buy Apple.

The world will be here long after the carbon based infestation is gone.

Finally, been holding that in for ages now...

I think this study is bogus.
Since it lists all the ways this agreement is not an agreement and ends with:
"At the very least, it's a big step toward resolving the mountain of patent issues between the companies."
"I have yet to see any solution advanced that is realistic and legal that would have actually prevented any of these shootings."

Not eventually when the program gets around to it.
Not to get electricity from (as suggested) but to plug directly into me to recharge me!
Watch for weasel words...
Uh, lets see -
CDs suck for long term archival storage. Professional photographers found that the hard way.
You have any idea how many CD's it would take to back up all those tapes?
Freeze them all and wait until a 3d Printer can scan and reconstruct them at the atomic level...
yeah, OLD cliches are often true, since the reason they are cliches is they work...
"If you don't have time to do it right the first time, will you have time to fix it or do it again?"
But, I find it hard to imagine the amount of polished code that could be created for $1,000,000,000.
I guess because the code executes so much faster today, it costs more to create and debug it?
Just saying
I wish I had a moderate point left to rate you up.
All these haters hating on Apple and saying how Apple SHOULD do it, have so much experience running the most valuable company in the world.
Maybe, Apple does what people want and are willing to pay for instead of what a few geeks that hang out on /. want.
