Microsoft did not give up the revenue stream of hardware, they never had it. Apple's difficulty here is do they try to maintain the hardware revenue stream if they port to Intel or do they drop it entirely. The latter option may be the only one that they could make money on but would mean a massive change in the business model of the company.

The reality for Apple is that they are making a profit with their current business model so why change?

I know about applying changes through the dock and I find I prefer Synergy. I do use it for more than just ratings, Synergy has hotkeys for almost every aspect of iTunes. I can adjust volume, skip tracks, popup track information, etc. in a fraction of the time it would take to go to the dock or bring up iTunes manually, and the action doesn't really interrupt my workflow.

  8. Re:How does the metadata get into the database? on 'Storage' to Replace Traditional Filesystems? · · Score: 1

Just to be the exception, I use the iTunes rating system extensively. When I have time I rate the songs as they are ripped otherwise I have a smart playlist that return only unrated songs. I also have playlists that return only songs rated 5, only songs rated over 4, only Blues songs over 4, etc.. When I'm listening to a particular mix if I feel the rating of a song needs to be adjusted I adjust it on the spot.

The key to all this is an app called Synergy that allows me to map hotkeys for rating the currently playing songs, among other things. The ratings are applied as I listen and require no extra time on my part to apply.

I think this would be the key to any metadata system: it has to be fairly transparent and has to be useful. I like listening to mixes and I've utilized the metadata in iTunes to facilitate that.

Speaking as a parent my answer to your question is yes, I will fight product placement and advertising in the schools my children attend. That will include exclusive tech deals with Microsoft, Apple, or any other company.

I feel strongly enough about exposing my children to diversity of tech that I will likely purchase Windows and Linux machines to go alongside my current collection of Macs for them to learn on. A school that is built from the ground up with a Microsoft appointed project manager would not be acceptable to me for my children.

For example I just finished up part of a Filemaker solution that uses PDF Services in OS X and Applescript to generate, name, and move to a destination folder PDFs from Filemaker records. Picking up the necessary Applescript knowledge to do this took extremely little time compared to what it would have taken me to learn PERL, for example.

I can't speak for the Windows client but on the Mac (OS 9 or less) when the user shuts the computer down the Retrospect client steps in after the apps have been closed but before the system shuts down. It stops the shutdown process and presents a dialog allowing the user to continue the shutdown or restart. If the user chooses neither the computer waits until the server backs it up and then shuts the machine down.

In my experience since Windows and Mac require you to properly shut down and not just turn the power off and all Macs and new Wintel machines power off at the end of the OS shut down, most users never touch the power switch.

This allows you to schedule backups for the times when nobodies using the machines. You can also have Retrospect watch for machines to appear on the network or you manually force a backup at any time.

At our shop we check the server logs every morning and watch for machines that haven't been backed up and take proactive measures when necessary.

Retrospect is about as good as gets, AFAIC. Always, of course, YMMV. :)
