  1. Re:2.5D is the new 2D on Do Next-Gen Games Have to be 3D? · · Score: 1

And the single best example of 2.5D, IMO, the Smash Bros. series. Super Smash Bros. Brawl for the Wii is going to sell millions, and it's 2.5D. Honestly it would probably sell just as well if it were 2D like Guilty Gear (but smoother and more unique frames per animation... GG is just way too ghetto haha).

Then you missed the point entirely. And you seem to think that challenging Jensen's idea that mankind hates everything since birth and basically thrives out of malice is equivalent to justifying everything about how humanity lives. I never even touched on the latter. Besides, the point was that we are talking about a particular species going extinct and while there are reasons to be upset over that, if there is any reactionary action to be taken it most certainly should not involve demonizing humanity the way Jensen is keen to do. Oh, heck why even bother. My first post was clear enough.

Well, mind you Jensen partially fulfills Premise Ten himself (that is, the first statement). Trade shipping contributing to an extinction of a species is hardly "an urge to destroy life" manifesting. Honestly if there is reason to lament it does not deserve to be lost in some overarching and baseless criticism of the human condition.

OMG d00d these chips will prawn in iPods! I have already sent an email to Apple's customer service folk asking when I can pre-order 200 Gb iPods with these chips in them.

But what if I want to talk about the Infinium Labs Phantom? can I still use the term "next generation?" A friend of mine was really confused about the console sale figures, as was I. And then we both realized we're playing the PS2 I bought just a month ago :-) (for FFXII). With so many folks being excited for the Wii/PS3 releases, I'd say not only sticker shock but also a determination to have at least something to play is what sold the other consoles. That and black friday making Game Boys cheap-as-free. I wonder just how many sold on that day...

  6. Why the Oblivion hate? on Oblivion Takes Top Honor At Spike VGAs · · Score: 3, Interesting

Oblivion might not be the best game to come out this year necessarily, but even saying that is still my own opinion. Twilight Princess, Gears, FF XII, and Oblivion have all set some sort of standard and that says something. Debating which is the best boils down to taste and privileging of some features over others (multiplayer, graphics, engaging puzzles, etc). From joystiq's report it appears the award show was overall quite terrible, and I wouldn't have been surprised if Best Game had gone to Madden NFL. At least we were spared that :-) Certainly there are other things to be upset about than Elder Scrolls IV getting *yet another award.* Such as maybe all the really tasteless humor.

  7. I have such a setup on Help for the Ultimate Multi-Console Gaming Setup? · · Score: 1

In our family room we have an N64, a Gamecube, a PS2, an XBox, an XBox360 (it lags playing Ninja Gaiden Black which is why the original XBox is hooked up), a LiteOn DVD writer/player, an additional region-free DVD player, a HD cable box, and a DVD changer which is also the surround sound controller. The consoles and DVD player are hooked up to the surround sound via a Pelican System Selector, which has something like 8 sets of component inputs (yes, I have a component cable for my Cube even). This way I can play anything in the highest video quality and surround sound by just selecting which input the System Selector uses at any time. ... Actually the setup is a bit tricker than that at this point. So that nearly everything can be recorded onto DVD (including my playing Smash Bros. for instance) an additional system selector sends stuff to the DVD writer. It's all a bit scary and I'd have to look at it again to remember exactly how that is all set up. A guy came over to replace our cable box one time, intending to install it for us real quick and be on his merry way. He took a look at the collossal mass of cables in the back of our setup, and basically ran away. At least he left the cable box for us to hook up ourselves.

Though both MS and Google would be happy returning the one result you actually wanted to find, so how many useless ones they return doesn't matter really. I agree that multi-million page results vs triple-digit suggests bias, but as long as usefulness isn't compromised it's not that big an issue to me.

But isn't the whole point that the Wii Remote doesn't have the learning curve that came with a joystick controller? Otherwise how would I convince my non-gamer relatives to pick it up as opposed to my wireless X-Box 360 controller?

  10. How representative of gamers in general is this? on Casual Gamers Not So Casual · · Score: 2, Informative

If you look at what results are really being looked at, you'll see that the sample of "gamers" was all people who go to the Trygames site, which IMO is not exactly the mainstream outlet for gaming. That over one-third of these people are 35-49 years of age, etc., is probably not representative of the gaming community that most are familiar with (console and popular PC games). I was at first very confused as to how anyone could have *ever* thought that "casual" gamers only play in 15-minute intervals (meaning that 20 minutes is teh hardc0re?), but then again a hardcore gamer wouldn't be able to stand Trygamer's offerings for more than 15 minutes anyway. ...Well I'm not sure where I was going with that, but in any case I wouldn't be confident to claim this is a very comprehensive study of the market if I were Macrovision. That is, when they say things such as "what the industry previously thought," I'm not sure who exactly makes up this "industry."
